Why Pinterest hired Walmart technology chief Jeremy King to lead engineering in 2019

Pinterest’s 2019 hire of Walmart technology chief Jeremy King brought ecommerce and retail-platform expertise to its visual-discovery and shopping strategy—but he was hired as Head of Engineering, not initially as CTO.

Pinterest announced on March 21, 2019, that Jeremy King would join as its Senior Vice President and Head of Engineering, reporting directly to CEO Ben Silbermann. King was leaving Walmart after nearly eight years, where he had most recently been an executive vice president and chief technology officer. The move brought large-scale retail and ecommerce engineering experience to Pinterest as it expanded visual discovery into shopping and personalized recommendations.

What Pinterest announced

Pinterest appointed King to lead the engineering organization behind its visual-discovery engine. The company said that engine served recommendations to more than 250 million people at the time across categories such as home, food, style and beauty. That figure was part of Pinterest’s March 2019 announcement, not a current user statistic.

King reported to Silbermann. Pinterest also highlighted engineering work on computer vision and commerce features including Shop the Look, Catalogs, shopping ads and personalized shopping recommendations. The company’s announcement is available in its newsroom archive.

King’s technology background

King’s experience extended beyond the shorthand “former Walmart CTO.” At Walmart, he was associated with Walmart Labs and technology supporting both U.S. stores and ecommerce. His remit included customer, merchant and supply-chain systems, as well as cloud and data platforms.

Before Walmart, King was executive vice president of technology at LiveOps and vice president of software development and engineering at eBay. Pinterest described his Walmart role as CTO and senior vice president at Walmart Labs, while contemporaneous coverage described him as Walmart U.S.’s EVP and CTO.

Why the hire mattered to Pinterest

Ecommerce infrastructure for a discovery company

Pinterest was not an online retailer. Its commercial opportunity was to help people move from inspiration to product discovery and, eventually, purchase. King had worked with the underlying systems that make that journey possible: large product catalogs, merchant data, customer experiences, fulfillment technology and connections between digital and physical retail.

That background matched Pinterest’s stated investment in shopping tools and its effort to make recommendations more useful to consumers and merchants. It also gave the company an executive accustomed to scaling technology across a very large consumer business.

Machine learning and computer vision

Pinterest’s product depended on understanding images, organizing them and matching them to a user’s interests. The announcement connected King’s ecommerce and consumer-product experience with Pinterest’s computer-vision and recommendation work. VentureBeat also reported that King had discussed Walmart’s use of machine learning to organize a much larger online assortment using inventory and pricing data. That was reporting about his prior work, not a promise of a specific Pinterest result.

A consequential moment for the company

Pinterest was presenting itself as a visual-discovery platform rather than merely an image-sharing service. The company was also preparing for its 2019 public-market debut, making the design and leadership of its engineering organization especially important. VentureBeat placed the appointment in that broader business and organizational context.

Head of Engineering was not initially the CTO job

The title matters. On March 21, 2019, Pinterest announced King as Head of Engineering, not as CTO. Contemporary VentureBeat reporting said the Head of Engineering role was the more senior position, reporting to the CEO, while CTO responsibilities were being shared among technical leaders. Pinterest was not actively searching for a new CTO at that point.

The appointment followed several leadership changes. Li Fan had previously held the Head of Engineering role, which King replaced. CTO Vanja Josifovski was leaving Pinterest for Airbnb; King did not simply replace Josifovski.

Question Accurate answer
What title did Pinterest announce in 2019? Senior Vice President and Head of Engineering
Who did King report to? CEO Ben Silbermann
Was he announced as Pinterest’s CTO? No
What did later company records call the role? Pinterest’s CTO, serving from 2019 through 2023; the position began as SVP and Head of Engineering

A later Pinterest corporate filing describes King as having served as CTO from 2019 through 2023, with the position initially titled SVP and Head of Engineering. That later description should not be used to rewrite the original announcement.

What happened after the appointment?

King remained at Pinterest for approximately five years. In a public transition statement, he said he was stepping back from operational roles and moving the job to Matt Madrigal. The filing records his Pinterest tenure as 2019–2023, so he should not be described as Pinterest’s current engineering chief.

The available record establishes the appointment, the role’s evolution and the transition out of operational leadership. It does not by itself prove that King caused a particular product launch, revenue result, user-growth figure or other later business outcome.

Timeline

  1. Before March 2019: King led major technology functions for Walmart’s stores and ecommerce business after earlier roles at LiveOps and eBay.
  2. March 21, 2019: Pinterest announced him as Senior Vice President and Head of Engineering, reporting to Silbermann.
  3. 2019–2023: Later corporate records describe King as Pinterest’s CTO during this period, with the role originating as Head of Engineering.
  4. After roughly five years: King said he was leaving operational leadership and transitioning the job to Matt Madrigal.

Bottom line

Pinterest’s 2019 move was a targeted attempt to add large-scale ecommerce, retail-data and platform-engineering experience to a visual-discovery business building shopping and recommendation products. The precise historical account is that King joined as Head of Engineering, not CTO; the CTO title came later in the company’s description of his tenure.
