Nvidia’s 2024 case for partnering with Dell was about reaching more than the hyperscale cloud companies that were then among its biggest customers. Dell already sold and supported computing, storage, and networking infrastructure for businesses and government agencies, giving Nvidia a route to organizations seeking to build their own AI systems.

Why Nvidia considered Dell a key partner

In a Bloomberg Television interview during Dell Technologies World in Las Vegas on May 20, 2024, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the company wanted to bring generative AI to businesses broadly. “We want to bring this generative AI capability to every company in the world,” he said. Bloomberg’s May 21 report described Nvidia at the time as reliant on a relatively small group of hyperscale data-center customers.

Dell addressed a different part of the market. Huang said businesses developing AI capabilities needed storage, networking, and computing, areas where Dell had an established infrastructure business serving companies and government agencies. The partnership was intended to make Nvidia’s technology available as part of systems those organizations could deploy, rather than requiring Nvidia to serve every customer directly. This was a complement to cloud providers, not a claim that Dell would replace them.

Why the pitch was about infrastructure, not just GPUs

Huang characterized the challenge as delivering a complete system: “It’s not about just delivering a box – it’s about delivering an entire infrastructure. It’s an infrastructure that’s insanely complicated.” An accelerator can provide AI compute, but enterprise deployment also involves connecting that compute to storage and networks, installing and managing software, and arranging services around the system.

Nvidia’s May 20, 2024 announcement described the Dell AI Factory with Nvidia as a combination of computing, networking, storage, services, and software for enterprise AI applications. That is the companies’ description of their proposition—not an independent finding that every organization needs the same configuration or that the offering outperforms alternatives.

What the companies announced in May 2024

Nvidia’s event announcement named several components of the updated Dell AI Factory with Nvidia:

  • Dell PowerEdge XE9680L: a liquid-cooled server that Nvidia said would include eight Blackwell Tensor Core GPUs.
  • Dell NativeEdge: automation for delivering Nvidia AI Enterprise software.
  • Nvidia NIM: inference microservices integrated into the offering.

These details describe the companies’ announcement at Dell Technologies World in May 2024. They are not independent performance benchmarks or proof of customer adoption. Nvidia’s current event page continues to present the Dell AI Factory as a portfolio spanning desktop to data center, but that current positioning does not establish the XE9680L’s present availability, price, or configuration.

What the partnership could mean for Nvidia—and what it does not prove

The strategic logic was to help more businesses and public organizations develop AI capabilities, potentially widening demand for Nvidia products beyond a small number of large cloud operators. Huang and Bloomberg presented that as the rationale for the partnership. It does not by itself establish that adoption or revenue subsequently increased, or that Dell’s systems are the right choice for every AI workload.

For a buyer, the distinction is between acquiring an accelerator and evaluating an integrated enterprise system. The companies’ pitch bundled compute with networking, storage, deployment software, and services; the relevant question is whether that combination fits an organization’s workloads and operating needs. The 2024 announcement alone does not answer that procurement question.
