Why iFixit Ended Its Samsung Self-Repair Partnership—and What Galaxy Owners Can Do Now

iFixit ended its Samsung collaboration over parts pricing and supply, but said it would keep selling Samsung parts and kits. Here are the current self-repair routes and what to check before buying.

iFixit ended its Samsung collaboration starting in June 2024 because it said parts were too expensive and difficult to obtain in quantities that made local repair viable. The split did not end Samsung self-repair: iFixit said it would keep selling Samsung parts and kits, while Samsung directed customers to its certified parts and repair resources through SamsungParts.com for qualified products.

Why did iFixit end its Samsung partnership?

On May 23, 2024, iFixit announced that the collaboration would end beginning in June. It said it could not obtain parts for local repair shops at prices and quantities that made business sense. In iFixit’s account, high component prices led many consumers to choose a replacement phone instead of a repair. iFixit’s announcement also criticized Galaxy designs that remained heavily glued together: batteries and screens could be sold only in pre-glued bundles, increasing the cost of a repair.

iFixit said it would no longer serve as Samsung’s designated third-party distributor of parts and tools or work directly with Samsung on new repair manuals. It also said it would remove the rule limiting each repair shop to seven Samsung parts per quarter. Scott Head of iFixit wrote, “Despite our best efforts, we have not been able to deliver on that promise.” The company said Samsung’s approach to repairability did not align with its mission.

These were iFixit’s explanations, not an audited comparison of repair costs or a measured assessment of how often the partnership succeeded. The available statements do not establish a typical repair bill or quantify how often repair was uneconomic.

Is Samsung self-repair still available?

Yes, but the route changed. Samsung originally announced a self-repair collaboration with iFixit that offered repair information, tools and authentic components for selected Galaxy devices. Samsung later said its program covered nearly 50 models across its portfolio. That figure describes Samsung’s program as reported in 2023, not a guarantee that every model remains eligible or that parts are currently in stock. Samsung’s 2023 expansion announcement describes the broader program.

After the breakup, Samsung directed customers seeking certified parts, tools and information for qualified products to SamsungParts.com, powered by Encompass, according to a report quoting the company’s response. Check the site for your exact model and region before ordering; eligibility and inventory can differ. The Verge’s report on Samsung’s post-breakup guidance covers that route.

Can you still buy Samsung parts from iFixit?

Yes. iFixit said it would continue selling Samsung parts and repair kits after ending its formal collaboration. It said it would source OEM parts when available and label original and aftermarket components clearly. It also said existing repair information would remain available and that it would continue publishing teardowns, while shifting limited in-house guide-writing capacity toward other manufacturers. iFixit also reported adding more than 10,000 new parts to its catalog in 2024, but that catalog-wide figure does not indicate that any particular Samsung part is available.

For a Galaxy screen or battery kit, search by the phone’s exact model number on iFixit or SamsungParts.com rather than relying on the device’s marketing name alone. Before buying, compare the options on these points:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Part origin: Check whether the listing identifies the component as OEM/original or aftermarket. iFixit said it would label the distinction; do not assume that every listing is original.
  • Model compatibility: Confirm the exact model variant and region supported. A part that fits one Galaxy model may not fit another with a similar name.
  • Assembly format: Check whether the battery or screen is sold alone or attached to a larger assembly. A pre-glued bundle can affect both the work involved and the total price.
  • Repair support: Verify that an appropriate guide and required tools are available for your model. iFixit’s end of direct manual collaboration means it is not promising new Samsung-specific guides at the former pace.
  • Returns and warranty: Read the seller’s current warranty, return window and conditions before opening or installing the part.
  • Region and stock: Confirm that the seller ships to your location and has the part in stock. Availability and terms can change.

Those checks matter because the end of the partnership did not make every Galaxy repair part interchangeable, guarantee that a given component is available, or establish that one seller will always be cheaper. Neither iFixit’s statements nor Samsung’s program announcement supplies an audited, model-by-model cost comparison.

Which repair route should you use?

Route Part labeling Compatibility and assembly Guides and tools Warranty, returns and availability
iFixit iFixit said it would clearly label original versus aftermarket parts and source OEM parts when available. Verify the exact model and whether the screen or battery is sold as a bundled assembly on the current listing. Existing information remains available; iFixit said it would continue teardowns but shift limited guide-writing capacity toward other manufacturers. Check current seller terms, shipping region and stock on the listing.
SamsungParts.com, powered by Encompass Samsung directed customers there for certified parts, tools and information for qualified products. Check whether the exact product is qualified and whether the listed part fits the specific model. Samsung’s post-breakup guidance identifies this as a parts, tools and information route for qualified products. Check current regional eligibility, inventory, warranty and return policy with the seller.

What the split means for repair costs

The practical lesson for a household budget is to compare the complete repair cost—not just the listed price of a battery or screen—with the cost and terms of a replacement device. Include any required bundled assembly, tools, shipping and the work involved. The available public statements do not provide a reliable repair-cost percentage, savings estimate or failure rate, so a meaningful comparison has to be made for the exact phone and current parts listings.
