HP’s 2015 acquisition of ConteXtream was intended to add carrier-grade software-defined networking (SDN) control to HP’s network functions virtualization (NFV) effort. ConteXtream’s open SDN platform complemented HP’s existing OpenNFV program; the available reporting establishes that strategic rationale, but not the deal’s price, financial return, or market impact.
What HP acquired and why it fit
On May 27, 2015, Data Center Knowledge reported that HP was acquiring ConteXtream, a Mountain View, California-based provider of an OpenDaylight-based, carrier-grade SDN fabric for NFV. The report said ConteXtream would join HP’s Communications Solutions Business when the transaction closed. The original HP announcement is not available in the cited material, so these deal details are attributable to Data Center Knowledge’s report.
NFV moves network functions—such as routing or security services—from dedicated appliances into software that can run on general-purpose infrastructure. SDN separates network control from the underlying equipment, allowing software to direct how traffic moves. In an NFV environment, SDN control can help connect virtualized functions into usable network services.
HP had an NFV effort called OpenNFV, and ConteXtream was already an OpenNFV partner, according to Data Center Knowledge. The reported strategic fit was therefore specific: HP brought NFV expertise and an existing program, while ConteXtream added an open SDN controller and fabric designed for carrier networks.

What ConteXtream’s platform added
The Register’s May 27, 2015 coverage described ConteXtream’s portfolio as ContexNet, ContexView, and ContexWare, and said HP’s announcement emphasized service function chaining. Service function chaining means steering traffic through a chosen sequence of network functions—for example, through security or policy services—rather than treating each function as an isolated appliance. The product names and announcement detail are reported by The Register.
That capability helps explain the acquisition’s relevance to NFV: virtualized functions need a way to be connected and controlled as a service. The reporting supports this intended complementarity, but does not establish technical performance, customer deployments, or whether particular ConteXtream products were retained or sold after the acquisition.

What is known about integration—and what is not
In a 2015 Securities Analyst Meeting transcript, HPE CEO Meg Whitman said, “We also successfully integrated several targeted acquisitions and integrations, including Voltage, ConteXtream, Stackato, and, of course, Aruba.” This is evidence of HPE’s stated integration status, not a product-level account of how ConteXtream’s software was incorporated, maintained, or commercialized. The statement appears in HPE’s 2015 Securities Analyst Meeting transcript.

The acquisition is best understood as a strategic capability addition: ConteXtream’s carrier-focused SDN platform was presented as a complement to HP’s NFV expertise and OpenNFV effort. The available sources do not establish a purchase price, customer or revenue figures, acquisition-specific financial results, or a measurable effect on HP’s competitive position. They also do not provide a precise closing date or evidence of market impact.
