Why Gold and Silver Markets Close on Weekends—and When Trading Resumes

CME’s regular NYMEX/COMEX schedule resumes Sunday evening, but specific small gold and silver futures now have 24/7 Globex access. Hours and weekend processing depend on the contract.

There is no single weekend timetable for every gold and silver market. CME’s published NYMEX/COMEX ClearPort schedule runs Sunday at 5:00 p.m. through Friday at 4:00 p.m. Central Time, but CME now lists specific 1-Ounce Gold and 100-Ounce Silver futures for 24/7 Globex access, subject to maintenance windows. Weekend access to those contracts does not create a separate settlement day: CME assigns those trades the next business day’s trade date.

Why do gold and silver markets close on weekends?

For many exchange-traded contracts, the weekly pause is part of the venue’s scheduled trading session. CME’s published hours show a weekly closure for its regular NYMEX/COMEX schedule, alongside maintenance periods for its continuous-access products. The official schedule establishes when those sessions operate, but it does not give one universal reason for weekend closures across every exchange, broker, or bullion market.

“Gold and silver markets” can mean exchange-traded futures, a broker’s retail spot-metal product, or other bullion markets. Their hours are not interchangeable. The CME times below apply only to the named CME schedules and contracts, not to every market that quotes a gold or silver price.

When does trading resume?

CME’s published NYMEX/COMEX ClearPort schedule

CME Group lists regular NYMEX/COMEX ClearPort hours as Sunday at 5:00 p.m. to Friday at 4:00 p.m. Central Time. On that schedule, the weekly session resumes Sunday evening. These are venue-specific published hours, not a universal reopening time for retail spot metals or every futures contract. Check CME’s current holiday and trading-hours calendar for the relevant contract and date; holiday schedules can differ and are subject to change.

Specific CME Globex contracts with 24/7 access

The blanket statement that all gold and silver futures are closed all weekend is no longer accurate for two CME products. CME lists its 1-Ounce Gold and 100-Ounce Silver futures as 24/7 Globex products, subject to maintenance windows. CME announced 1-Ounce Gold’s expanded trading began July 24, 2026, and that 100-Ounce Silver was scheduled to launch September 11, 2026, subject to regulatory review. Its 24/7 trading page currently lists both contracts.

What happens to a weekend trade?

Continuous access does not mean CME opens a separate weekend business-day settlement cycle. CME says weekend or holiday trades made from Friday evening through Sunday evening receive the next business day’s trade date. Clearing, settlement, and regulatory reporting are processed on that business day. Consult CME’s 24/7 trading information for the product-specific terms.

What should traders check before relying on a reopening time?

  • Name the product and venue. Confirm whether the quote or order is for a CME futures contract, a broker’s spot-metal product, or another market.
  • Check the timezone. The ClearPort hours above are in Central Time; a displayed local time may differ.
  • Check maintenance and holiday schedules. A product described as 24/7 still has maintenance windows, and CME says holiday hours can change.
  • Confirm trade-date treatment. For CME’s 24/7 products, a weekend trade’s business-day date and processing may not match the time shown on a screen.

The cited CME schedules do not establish a universal reopening time for retail brokers’ spot products, the London bullion market, or every global exchange. Check the relevant broker or venue directly rather than applying CME’s hours elsewhere.
