Marko Elez, a 25-year-old DOGE staff member, resigned on February 6, 2025, after The Wall Street Journal asked the White House about his connection to a deleted social-media account reported to contain racist posts. The timing was clear; the reason for his resignation was not confirmed. The episode drew added attention because Elez had reportedly been given access to systems that handle federal payments.
What happened to Marko Elez?
The Wall Street Journal reported on February 6, 2025, that Elez resigned after the newspaper asked the White House about his connection to a deleted social-media account. The Journal described Elez as a DOGE staff member deployed to scrutinize federal spending.
Futurism reported that the White House notified it of Elez’s resignation after the Journal’s inquiry. That sequence establishes the timing, but not a confirmed explanation for his departure. Futurism said it was unclear whether the posts and the resignation were directly linked. Neither a named DOGE spokesperson nor Elez offered an attributable explanation in the reporting cited here.
What did the deleted account reportedly say?
Futurism described the account as linked to Elez and reported that its posts advocated racism and eugenics. Among the examples it relayed were support for a “eugenic immigration policy,” opposition to marrying outside one’s ethnicity, anti-Indian rhetoric about H-1B visas, and the line, “Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool.”

Those are reports about content on an account linked to Elez. The reporting does not establish that he authored every post, so the account connection should not be treated as definitive proof of authorship.
Why did his Treasury access raise the stakes?
The resignation came amid scrutiny of DOGE’s access to the Treasury Department’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service. WIRED reported, citing three sources, that Elez had access to systems there. Two of those sources said his privileges included the ability to write code. That is a more consequential capability than simply viewing payment data, but WIRED’s reporting does not by itself establish that he changed payment records or disrupted operations.

WIRED characterized the systems as controlling payments totaling more than a fifth of the U.S. economy. Separately, the publication reported that Treasury records showed Federal Disbursement Services paid out $5.45 trillion in fiscal year 2024. The first figure describes the systems’ scope as WIRED reported it; the second is a specific annual payment total reported from Treasury records.

In a February 3, 2025, press release, Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized DOGE’s access to government payment systems and warned about risks to payment integrity. She said, “It is extraordinarily dangerous to meddle with the critical systems that…ensure that tens of millions of Americans receive their Social Security checks, tax refunds, and Medicare benefits.”

Warren also warned that what she called “astonishing mismanagement”—including handing over the federal government’s payment system and sidelining the senior career official responsible for managing it—“could trigger a global financial crisis.” Those statements express her political and risk assessment; they are not an adjudicated finding that a crisis occurred or that payment systems were compromised.
