Why did CrowdStrike send Uber Eats gift cards?
In an email reported by TechCrunch on July 24, 2024, CrowdStrike offered partners a $10 Uber Eats gift card. The note said the outage had caused “additional work” and told recipients: “To express our gratitude, your next cup of coffee or late night snack is on us!” The company framed the voucher as a gesture of thanks and an apology for the inconvenience to people helping customers—not as a settlement or payment calculated against outage losses.

CrowdStrike’s CEO, George Kurtz, separately apologized to customers and partners, saying, “I want to sincerely apologize directly to all of you for today’s outage.” CrowdStrike’s statement addressed the incident and its response; the gift-card offer was a limited goodwill gesture.
Who received the $10 voucher?
The reported offer was directed to partners and teammates involved in helping customers through the disruption. It was not described as a payment to every affected computer owner or a general offer to all CrowdStrike customers. The available reporting does not establish a complete eligibility list or the total number of recipients.

Why were some gift cards canceled?
The gesture became a reputational problem because some recipients could not use the cards. The Guardian reported that Uber flagged the mass issuance as potential fraud. TechCrunch tested a voucher and encountered an error saying the gift card “has been canceled by the issuing party and is no longer valid.” Those reports establish that at least one tested card failed and that the bulk issuance raised a fraud flag; they do not show that every voucher was canceled.
What caused the CrowdStrike outage?
On July 19, 2024, a defective CrowdStrike Falcon content/configuration update affected Windows hosts. CrowdStrike said the incident was not a cyberattack. Its later root-cause analysis identified the Channel File 291 content update as the source of the widespread outage.

How many computers were affected?
The Associated Press reported that about 8.5 million Windows computers were affected. AP later covered congressional scrutiny of the incident, including executive Adam Meyers’s apology in September 2024 testimony. The 8.5 million figure is an AP-reported estimate, not a count of all customer losses or a measure of financial damages.
