BMW’s heated-seat subscription was defensible as a manufacturing and software-platform experiment, but poorly matched to what customers thought they were buying. BMW could install common hardware, activate features later and test recurring digital revenue. The problem was asking owners to keep paying for a physical comfort function that appeared to be part of the car. BMW ended the specific heated-seat subscription in 2023, while continuing to sell other ConnectedDrive services.
What BMW actually charged for
BMW did not put every seat heater in every vehicle behind one universal fee. On applicable vehicles, BMW’s U.S. documentation says certain smart-interior functions—including rules that automatically activate heated seats or a heated steering wheel when the outside temperature reaches a chosen threshold—require an active ConnectedDrive subscription.
BMW Digital Premium is offered through My BMW Garage or the in-car ConnectedDrive Store as a monthly or annual auto-renewing subscription. The BMW USA FAQ currently displays a starting price of $9.99 per month for the package shown there; the exact package, price and eligibility depend on the vehicle and account.
BMW’s purchasing guide, dated August 22, 2024, says buyers should check the ConnectedDrive Store, My BMW App or My BMW Garage for the availability, price and duration of a particular feature. BMW also says most model-year-2023-and-newer vehicles require an active ConnectedDrive contract to activate most features.

The strongest financial case for BMW
Standard hardware can simplify production
BMW’s software-mediated model can let the company fit a common set of electronic and comfort components across vehicles instead of building every car around a different combination of paid options. A buyer can then activate a capability later through the store.
That is a plausible production-flexibility argument, not a published BMW savings calculation. BMW’s public documentation confirms vehicle-specific, store-based activation, but it does not provide a verified manufacturing-cost reduction from heated-seat subscriptions.

Short-term users can buy option value
A permanent option price makes the most sense for someone who expects to use a feature throughout ownership. A subscription can be rational for a driver who needs it only temporarily: during a winter in a colder region, during a short lease, or after moving to a different climate. The customer pays for the period of expected use rather than committing to a lifetime option.

A connected-car platform can support recurring services
BMW already operates an account, payment and software-delivery system through ConnectedDrive. That infrastructure can distribute navigation, entertainment, apps, assistant functions and other digital features. From BMW’s perspective, treating the vehicle as an updateable platform creates a common commercial model rather than a separate transaction for every capability.

BMW USA spokesperson Jay Hanson described the approach this way: “Our Connected Drive portfolio has always been dynamic, and we reserve the right to vary our offering structure according to the needs of individual markets around the world.” The statement explains why availability and pricing can differ by country and vehicle rather than establishing one global BMW subscription list.
Why the heated-seat idea angered owners
The payment felt like an unlock fee
Owners generally experience a seat heater as a tangible component already installed in the car. A recurring charge therefore feels different from paying for cellular data, cloud storage, live traffic, streaming content or driver-assistance software. Those services have an obvious continuing operating cost; the heater appears to work locally once the vehicle contains the necessary hardware.
Recommended Free Tools
The objection is not simply that the fee was monthly. It is that the customer perceived the underlying purchase as complete and the subscription as a toll on equipment already paid for.

The value is easy to understand as a one-time option
Heated seats deliver a straightforward physical benefit every winter. Unlike a map database or cloud assistant, the feature does not obviously improve through ongoing server work. That makes a recurring price harder to justify, even if BMW incurs platform, support and connectivity costs elsewhere in the vehicle.
BMW acknowledged the launch choice was poor
BMW head of product communications Alexandra Landers later said introducing heated-seat and heated-steering-wheel subscriptions was “probably not the best way to start with it.” BMW has continued to defend paid digital features partly by pointing to cloud and connectivity costs in connected vehicles, but that explanation fits remote or continuously updated services more naturally than a basic heater.
One-time option versus subscription: the practical test
| Question | One-time option | Recurring ConnectedDrive fee |
|---|---|---|
| What you are paying for | Permanent access to an option installed and enabled at purchase | Access for a monthly or annual term, often delivered through BMW’s software store |
| Best fit | A feature you expect to use for most of ownership | A service you may need temporarily or that receives continuing digital support |
| Hardware status | Usually selected and enabled as part of the vehicle configuration | May use hardware already fitted but activated by software; eligibility is vehicle-specific |
| Ongoing costs | No recurring BMW activation payment after purchase | May reflect account, connectivity, cloud, content or support costs, depending on the service |
| Cancellation and transfer | Access normally remains with the vehicle after purchase | Terms can depend on the vehicle, account, market and subscription; check the store before buying or selling |
| Price certainty | Known at configuration or purchase | Price and duration are shown for the specific vehicle and can vary over time |
Are BMW subscriptions still a thing in 2026?
Yes. BMW still sells vehicle-specific ConnectedDrive and Digital Premium subscriptions, commonly on monthly or annual terms. The discontinued heated-seat offer should not be confused with the broader ConnectedDrive strategy.

There is no single price or feature list that applies to every BMW. Model, model year, operating system, country and the vehicle’s account determine what appears. The ConnectedDrive Store is the authoritative place to check a particular car.
How to check a BMW before you buy or subscribe
- Identify the exact model, model year and vehicle identification number when possible.
- Open the vehicle’s ConnectedDrive Store or My BMW Garage; BMW also directs customers to the My BMW App.
- Read the feature description to determine whether it is a permanent option, a trial, a monthly subscription or an annual auto-renewing plan.
- Check whether the feature is available in your country and whether an active ConnectedDrive contract is required.
- Before buying a used BMW, ask whether the subscription is attached to the vehicle, the account or a defined term, and confirm what happens when ownership changes.
What the experiment proves—and what it does not
BMW’s strongest argument was flexibility: common hardware, later activation and a platform that can sell different digital capabilities in different markets. Its weakest argument was applying that model first to a physical feature whose benefit looks complete at the moment of purchase.
BMW ended the heated-seat subscription in 2023, but no authoritative figure establishes its take-up rate, revenue, cancellation rate or manufacturing-cost savings. Those results should not be inferred from the fact that ConnectedDrive subscriptions continue.
The Bottom Line
BMW was right that software activation can make a car more flexible and give owners temporary access to features. It was wrong to assume a recurring charge would feel fair for a heater customers believed they had already bought. Treat heated-seat subscriptions as a discontinued experiment; evaluate today’s ConnectedDrive offers individually in the store for the specific BMW.
