A relevant, editorially earned link can help search engines discover and contextualize pages while sending referral visitors, brand exposure and partnership opportunities. Raw backlink counts—and third-party authority scores—do not guarantee rankings. Results depend on the usefulness of the destination page, technical accessibility, relevance, competition and compliance with Google’s policies.
What a backlink is
A backlink (also called an inbound or external link) is a hyperlink on another website that points to your store. Examples include a magazine linking to a collection in a buying guide, a trade publication citing your market data, or a manufacturer listing an authorized retailer.
External links, internal links and qualified links
- External backlinks: Links from other websites. They can support discovery, context, referral traffic and brand visibility.
- Internal links: Links between your own pages. They are not backlinks, but they help Google understand relationships among your home page, categories, guides and products. Google says internal link relationships can help it infer relative page importance. Google’s e-commerce structure guidance explains the model.
- Qualified links: Publishers may use
rel="nofollow",rel="sponsored"orrel="ugc". Such links can still produce referral visits, awareness and relationships even when they are not intended to pass ranking credit.
Google generally discovers crawlable links represented by an HTML <a> element with an href attribute. See its crawlable links documentation.
Why links can be especially useful for online stores
Commercial search is crowded
Product and category results often include marketplaces, major retailers, established brands, publishers and review sites. Links can contribute to a broader reputation signal, but they cannot compensate for weak products, thin category pages, poor usability or pages that do not satisfy the search intent.

Ordinary product pages are hard to cite
People rarely link naturally to a standard product page unless the product is notable, reviewed, newsworthy or unusually useful. Stores often earn coverage with adjacent assets such as original research, sizing tools, maintenance instructions, calculators, comparisons and educational guides, then connect those assets to commercial pages with internal links.
Links can create value without a ranking change
A relevant publication may send sales, email signups, wholesale inquiries, brand searches, influencer relationships or secondary coverage. Evaluate links as marketing assets, not only as ranking votes.
What makes an e-commerce backlink valuable?
| Criterion | What to check |
|---|---|
| Topical relevance | The site, audience or use case is meaningfully related to your products, industry or market. |
| Editorial context | The link appears in useful content for readers, rather than a sitewide footer, link-selling page or mass-produced network. |
| Real audience | There is credible readership, engagement or commercial relevance. A high tool score is not proof of an audience. |
| Page-level usefulness | The specific referring page is relevant and helpful, not an automatically generated archive or unrelated directory. |
| Natural placement and anchor | The surrounding text explains the link. Use descriptive, natural wording rather than repeated exact-match keywords. Google discusses natural link text in its link guidance. |
| Durability | An evergreen guide or genuine resource mention is usually a stronger business asset than a temporary placement. |
| Geographic fit | Local publications, events, organizations and trade groups can be particularly useful for stores serving a defined area. |
One relevant specialist publication may be more valuable than a large but unrelated domain. There is no universal “natural” percentage split among link types or destinations.
Where should backlinks point?
Do not force every link to a money page. Choose the destination that genuinely answers the referring reader’s next question.
| Destination | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Product page | Reviews, launches, comparisons, creator recommendations or authorized-retailer listings. | Strong commercial relevance, but often difficult to cite without seeming promotional. |
| Category page | Broader buying guides and commercial-intent coverage. | Good balance of relevance and editorial usefulness. |
| Buying guide or research | Explanations, data, tools and references publishers want to cite. | Usually easier to earn links, but needs clear internal paths to products. |
| Home page | Brand stories, company profiles and general references. | Useful for discovery but less targeted to a product need. |
| Local page | City, regional or in-person store coverage. | Valuable for geographic demand; less relevant to a purely national or global offer. |
Internal linking that turns coverage into commercial value
External acquisition and internal architecture work together. Google’s e-commerce guidance recommends logical navigation from menus to categories, subcategories and products.
- Link the home page to priority categories.
- Link category pages to subcategories and important products.
- Link guides and editorial pages to the relevant categories and products.
- Link product pages to accessories, alternatives and supporting guides.
- Use descriptive menu labels and link text. Shopify provides related internal-link recommendations.
Important pages should have stable canonical URLs, be indexable, return the correct status code, avoid accidental noindex or robots.txt blocks, and be included appropriately in your sitemap. If every product cannot be reached through links, Google recommends a sitemap or Merchant Center feed as an additional discovery mechanism.
Ways an e-commerce store can earn links
Digital public relations
Give publishers a useful reason to cover the business: original market data, expert commentary, a meaningful product innovation, seasonal shopping analysis, supply-chain transparency or a strong community story. “We exist” is rarely news.

Recommended Free Tools
Expert-led resources
Create fit and sizing guides, compatibility charts, installation instructions, maintenance advice, ingredient explainers, decision trees and “what to use instead” resources. The purpose is to solve a customer problem, not to manufacture anchor text.
Reviews and product seeding
Sending a product for honest consideration is different from paying for coverage, requiring a positive review, specifying anchor text or guaranteeing a link. Google’s spam policies identify exchanging goods or services for links intended to manipulate rankings as link spam. Commercial relationships should be disclosed, and publishers must be free to qualify links appropriately.
Partnerships, suppliers and local resources
Legitimate sources include manufacturers’ authorized-retailer pages, trade associations, professional organizations, complementary brands, event organizers, curated local directories and maintained member listings. Avoid reciprocal arrangements created mainly to manipulate rankings.
Reclamation and community participation
Request factual corrections for unlinked brand mentions, broken links after migrations, incorrect company references and outdated product URLs. In forums and Q&A communities, contribute genuinely useful answers; dropping promotional links into unrelated discussions is spammy and rarely valuable.

- Buying or selling links intended to pass ranking credit.
- Packages promising hundreds or thousands of links.
- Private blog networks and automated link-generation software.
- Comment spam and irrelevant guest posts at scale.
- Excessive reciprocal links, sitewide exact-match anchors and keyword stuffing.
- Press-release syndication used solely to manufacture links.
- Scholarships, widgets, badges or awards created mainly to obtain links.
- Requiring influencers or reviewers to provide an unqualified link in exchange for products or payment.
Google’s policy covers paid links, excessive exchanges, automated services, manipulative guest posts and product-or-service-for-link schemes: read the policy.
How to audit a backlink profile without panicking
Separate four situations:
- Useful links: Relevant editorial or business references that send visitors or support discovery.
- Unwanted links: Irrelevant links that you did not create. Their existence alone does not prove a penalty.
- Manipulative activity: Deliberate patterns created to influence rankings, such as purchased packages or a private network.
- Manual action: A specific Google enforcement notice requiring remediation.
Third-party “toxic backlink” labels are proprietary diagnostics, not Google decisions. Ahrefs explains this distinction. Do not disavow every unfamiliar domain. Consider disavowal only after confirming a substantial history of deliberate manipulative acquisition or a manual-action situation, attempting practical removals, and following Google’s current official instructions.

A practical 90-day plan
Days 1–30: establish the baseline
- Record Search Console clicks, impressions, branded and nonbranded performance, indexed priority pages and manual-action status.
- List existing referring domains, linked pages, recent migrations and URL changes.
- Check crawlability, canonicals, status codes, internal links,
noindex, robots.txtand sitemaps. - Select commercial pages and one or two assets that offer a credible reason for coverage.
Google Search Essentials notes that appearing in Search is free, but technical compliance does not guarantee crawling, indexing or ranking.
Days 31–60: create and pitch something useful
- Publish or improve the guide, tool, study or resource, documenting its audience, evidence, owner and update schedule.
- Build a small prospect list ranked by relevance, audience, editorial fit, referral potential, geography, relationship strength and compliance risk.
- Send personalized pitches explaining why the resource benefits that publisher’s readers.
- Allow natural anchor text and do not demand a dofollow link, exact phrase, positive coverage or publication date.
Days 61–90: follow up and measure
- Confirm published links resolve correctly and target indexable pages.
- Reclaim relevant unlinked mentions and broken inbound links.
- Strengthen internal links from successful assets to categories and products.
- Track referral sessions, conversions, branded demand, organic clicks and impressions over time.
- Compare linked content with similar content that did not receive coverage; do not attribute every change to one link.
How to measure whether link building is worth it
| Layer | Metrics |
|---|---|
| Visibility | Nonbranded impressions and clicks, category and product rankings, indexed priority pages. |
| Link quality | Relevant referring domains, links to priority pages, editorial context, retention and referring-page traffic. |
| Business | Referral revenue, assisted conversions, new customers, email signups, wholesale leads and branded-search growth. |
| Quality control | Manual-action status, crawlability, redirects, broken inbound links, anchor patterns and sudden unexplained link spikes. |
There is no reliable promise that one backlink will produce a measurable ranking increase. Seasonality, inventory, pricing, competitor activity, algorithm changes, content updates and technical changes can affect the same metrics.
Free and paid tools: what to budget for
| Tool or option | Best fit | Pricing or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Every store’s first-party performance, indexing, manual-action and link baseline. | Free. It is not a complete competitor-link database or outreach platform. |
| Ahrefs Webmaster Tools / Ahrefs paid plans | Backlink discovery, competitor links, link intersections, audits and rank tracking. | Free verified-owner access is limited. The displayed regional pricing showed Lite £99/month, Standard £199, Advanced £359 and Enterprise £1,199; currency and billing can vary, and annual billing was advertised as saving up to 17%. |
| Semrush One | Teams wanting a broad SEO and marketing suite. | The displayed annual-billing signals were $165.17/month Starter, $248.17 Pro+ and $455.67 Advanced, versus displayed regular monthly prices of $199, $299 and $549. Recheck the live page before purchase. |
| Moz Pro | Users who prefer Moz’s link metrics, rank tracking and campaign workflow. | The retrieved page did not establish a reliable current headline price; verify live pricing and index differences. |
| Agency or specialist service | Stores needing sustained PR, prospecting or outreach capacity. | Vet tactics, disclosures, ownership, reporting and cancellation terms. Avoid guaranteed rankings, hidden domains and bulk-link promises. |
Shopify automates some technical elements, but merchants still control content, navigation, internal links and strategic promotion. Its SEO overview is a useful platform reference; it does not generate authoritative backlinks for you.
When should backlinks get budget?
Link acquisition is more attractive when important pages are indexable, category pages satisfy intent, the market is competitive, and the business has newsworthy expertise, data, products or relationships. Fix technical problems, thin or duplicate categories, incomplete product information and poor usability first. Tools identify opportunities; they do not create links. A small, relevant campaign that can also produce referral business is usually a better investment than a high-volume package.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are backlinks still important for e-commerce stores in 2026?
Yes, links remain useful for discovery, context, referral traffic and brand visibility, but Google does not publish a backlink quota or guarantee rankings from any link.
How many backlinks does an online store need?
There is no universal number. Prioritize relevant referring domains, useful editorial context, referral value and links to pages that satisfy search intent.
Are paid backlinks safe?
Buying links intended to pass ranking credit violates Google’s spam policies. Paid advertising can be legitimate when it is clearly disclosed and appropriately qualified.

Should backlinks point to product pages?
Only when the product is the genuine subject of a review, comparison, launch or retailer listing. Guides, research and tools are often easier to cite, with internal links leading shoppers to products.
Are nofollow links useful?
They can still send referral visitors, build awareness and create relationships even when they are not intended to pass ranking credit.
Can unwanted backlinks hurt an e-commerce store?
An unwanted link alone does not prove a penalty. Investigate deliberate manipulative campaigns or a manual action rather than reacting to every unfamiliar domain.
Should I disavow links marked toxic by an SEO tool?
Not routinely. Tool labels are estimates. Consider disavowal only after evidence of substantial deliberate manipulation or a manual-action issue, using Google’s current guidance.
What is the best free backlink tool?
Google Search Console is the essential free first-party baseline. Verified Ahrefs Webmaster Tools can add limited backlink and audit data for your own site.
How long do backlinks take to work?
Timing is uncertain and depends on crawling, indexing, relevance, competition, destination-page quality and the wider site. Avoid fixed promises such as 30 days.
Is link building worth paying an agency for?
It can be worthwhile when you need sustained digital PR or outreach and the agency is transparent. Reject guaranteed rankings, bulk packages, hidden prospects and tactics that conflict with Google’s policies.
