The San Francisco startup sold millions of devices, reported about $100 million in 2017 revenue, and raised figures variously reported at $182 million to more than $200 million. On April 29, 2019, however, it announced layoffs and a shutdown after a crucial late-stage financing deal fell through. The episode shows the difference between product traction, revenue, cash burn, profitability and financial runway.
What Anki built
Anki emerged from stealth at Apple’s 2013 Worldwide Developers Conference with Anki Drive, an app-controlled racing system whose cars used computer vision and robotics. Overdrive followed as a successor platform with expanded tracks, cars and software. TechCrunch and IEEE Spectrum describe how the company then moved toward character-driven home robots.
Cozmo
Cozmo was a small, expressive robot marketed as an educational and social companion for children. Its personality depended on computer vision, artificial-intelligence software, a mobile app and substantial character design. TechCrunch reported that Anki hired composers and former Pixar and DreamWorks animators to create that experience.
Vector
Vector extended the idea toward a more autonomous household companion for a broader audience. It had a more significant cloud component, making long-term service support especially important. Axios covered Vector’s positioning and capabilities.

What happened on April 29, 2019?
- April 29: Anki announced that it would shut down and lay off its workforce.
- Workforce reduction: Contemporary reports described just over 200 employees or several hundred workers, with dismissals effective the following Wednesday.
- Following days: Product development and manufacturing ceased shortly afterward.
Anki said it had pursued every financial avenue but could not complete a significant strategic-investor financing deal. TechCrunch reported that possible acquisition interest involving Microsoft, Amazon and Comcast did not produce a transaction; those reports are attributed accounts, not evidence of a completed sale. VentureBeat reported the shutdown and workforce figures.
How much money did Anki raise?
| Reported figure | What it means | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| About $182 million | Funding total cited from Crunchbase | TechCrunch; reported capital raised, not an audited loss |
| Nearly or more than $200 million | Rounded total used in contemporary coverage | VentureBeat and other reports |
“Burning through almost $200 million” is headline shorthand. The public reporting establishes how much capital was reportedly raised, not that Anki spent exactly that amount as operating burn. Burn means cash consumed by operations and investment; revenue is sales income; profitability is whether income exceeded all costs; runway is how long the company could continue without new financing.
Did Anki’s products fail?
No. Anki said it had shipped millions of products. Reporting cited approximately 1.5 million robots sold by August 2018, including hundreds of thousands of Cozmo units. VentureBeat separately reported 6.5 million devices, a broader figure that likely includes racing products and should not be combined with the robot count. Cozmo was described as a major holiday hit and, in one account, Amazon’s top-selling toy in 2017. Axios examined the market challenge.
Those sales demonstrate consumer appeal, not necessarily durable profits. A company can sell successfully and still lack the cash to finance inventory, new products and ongoing software support.

Why strong sales were not enough
Expensive hardware operations
Anki financed robotics and artificial-intelligence research while also paying for industrial design, manufacturing, inventory, retail distribution, customer support, mobile applications, cloud services and content. Its products had more technical and creative cost than an ordinary toy, but hardware margins and replacement cycles still constrained the business.
A costly product pipeline
Launching one hit did not end the spending. Anki needed another generation of products to sustain retailer interest and revenue. Development, tooling, certification, inventory commitments and marketing could require cash before the next product generated sales.
Software and cloud obligations
Cozmo required a compatible mobile device and continuing app support. Vector’s cloud dependence created a larger continuity obligation: customers reasonably expected a household companion to keep working for years, while much of the original revenue came from a one-time hardware purchase.
An awkward category position
Anki sat between children’s technology and consumer robotics. Its products were more complex and expensive than conventional toys, but discretionary and nonessential compared with mainstream electronics. That middle ground made differentiation possible while making recurring revenue and predictable demand difficult. IEEE Spectrum reported approximately $100 million in 2017 revenue and expectations of exceeding that in 2018, but those figures do not establish positive cash flow or profit.

Dependence on the next financing round
The immediate failure was financing, according to Anki’s own explanation. Revenue did not remove the need for outside capital if the company’s spending on inventory, research, support and its roadmap exceeded cash generation. When the late-stage deal failed, the company could not bridge to the next phase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Shutdown versus structural failure
| Question | What is established |
|---|---|
| Immediate trigger | A significant late-stage strategic-investor financing deal fell through. |
| Structural pressures | High hardware and software costs, working-capital needs, uncertain recurring revenue and dependence on continued funding. |
| Not publicly established | Exact burn rate, gross margins, operating losses, debt, inventory write-downs or why each potential investor declined. |
The evidence therefore supports “Anki shut down” or “ceased operations,” not a precise claim that it lost a verified $200 million or that a formal bankruptcy proceeding explains the event.
What happened to Cozmo, Vector and Overdrive?
Anki’s closure did not mean every product became unusable immediately. Anki arranged limited support, and Vector was the product most exposed to cloud-service continuity. Digital Dream Labs later acquired rights and selected assets connected with Cozmo, Vector and Overdrive. Its account is available at Digital Dream Labs’ Anki history page.
The acquisition announcement said Digital Dream Labs did not assume Anki’s liabilities: PR Newswire. That was an asset transition and attempted product continuation, not the survival of Anki as a company. Vector ownership and service information is documented at Digital Dream Labs’ Vector status page.

What Anki’s failure teaches consumer-robotics companies
- Demand is not the same as a durable business. Millions of sales can coexist with inadequate margins or cash generation.
- Hardware creates working-capital risk. Factories, components and inventory must be financed before customers pay.
- Connected products create long support obligations. Apps, servers and operating-system compatibility can outlast the original sale.
- Recurring revenue matters. A one-time robot purchase may not fund years of cloud, software and customer support.
- Financing timing can decide survival. A failed round can end a company even after a successful launch and substantial revenue.
Anki’s story is not proof that consumer robots cannot work. It is a case study in having to build reliable hardware, engaging software and a financeable operating model at the same time.
