An Upstox login error is not a diagnosis. The cause may be an outdated app or browser, an unstable connection, expired cookies, an incorrect or blocked PIN, an OTP or TOTP problem, a conflicting session, an account restriction, or an Upstox service issue. Note the exact wording and whether it occurs in the app, web portal, or both before choosing a fix.

Quick checks before changing credentials
- Check Upstox’s system-health page and official support updates. If many users report the same failure across app and web at the same time, a service incident is more likely, but social posts alone do not confirm an outage.
- Retry once on mobile data and once on Wi-Fi. If you use two SIMs, test the other SIM’s data connection.
- Test both the Upstox app and the official web portal. A failure in only one channel usually points to a local app or browser issue.
- Confirm that you are using the registered 10-digit mobile number. Upstox’s current app flow sends verification to the registered mobile number and email, then uses a six-digit PIN for later logins. See Upstox’s mobile-number login instructions.
Fix the Upstox mobile app
Upstox’s official app troubleshooting sequence is to update the app, check connectivity, clear cache, and retry. On Android, open Settings → Applications/App Settings → Upstox → Storage, then select Clear Cache. If necessary, use Clear Storage as well. Update Upstox from Google Play or the Apple App Store, restart the phone, and try again. Full steps are in Upstox’s app troubleshooting guide.
Clearing storage or reinstalling is more disruptive than clearing cache: it removes local app data and requires fresh authentication. Upstox says reinstallation requires OTP verification through the registered mobile number and email, followed by the six-digit PIN. Do this only after confirming that you can receive those messages.
If the app still fails
- Check that the phone’s operating system and app are supported and current.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or restrictive network that may interfere with authentication.
- Capture the exact error, handset model, and Android or iOS version for support.
Fix the Upstox web portal
For Chrome, select the three-dot menu, choose More Tools → Clear Browsing Data, select a time range (use All time for a complete reset), tick Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then click Clear data. Update Chrome from the same menu, relaunch it, and retry. This is the procedure in Upstox’s web-portal guidance.

As general browser troubleshooting, test a private/incognito window, disable extensions that block scripts or cookies, and ensure JavaScript and cookies are allowed for the official Upstox site. Do not enter credentials on a lookalike domain.
If your PIN is wrong or the account is blocked
Do not keep trying PINs. Upstox states that five failed PIN attempts can block the account. Select Forgot PIN, enter your PAN details, tap Continue, enter the OTPs sent to the registered mobile number and email, and create a new six-digit PIN. The exact flow is documented at Upstox’s PIN-reset page.
Upstox currently says mobile-number authentication remains valid for 30 days on a mobile device and seven days on a browser. These periods and screen labels can change with future security or app updates.
If you are not receiving or verifying the OTP
- Confirm that the number is the one registered with Upstox; an old number will not receive the code.
- Check mobile coverage and whether SMS blocking, spam filtering, or a full inbox is interfering.
- Check the registered email account’s inbox and spam folder.
- Use the newest OTP. Repeated requests can leave several codes in your messages, and an earlier one may no longer be valid.
- If OTPs arrive but verification fails, retry with the latest code and the registered mobile number rather than repeatedly requesting more codes.
If delivery remains impossible, contact Upstox instead of repeatedly reinstalling the app or guessing credentials.

Use QR login when the app works but web login does not
- Open the Upstox web platform and display its QR code.
- Log in to the Upstox app with your six-digit PIN or biometrics.
- Tap the Upstox icon at the top left.
- Select QR code.
- Scan the code shown on the web portal.
- Confirm the login within three minutes.
Upstox says the QR code itself is valid for only 30 seconds; refresh it if it expires. See the QR-login instructions. This workaround cannot help if you cannot access the app.
Clear a stale or conflicting session
A stale cookie or old session can cause redirects, repeated login prompts, or an apparent login that returns to the sign-in screen. If you can access Upstox on another device or channel, use Upstox icon → My account → Profile → Manage sessions in the app, or My account/Profile → My account – User ID → Manage sessions on the web. Choose a session or Log out all sessions. Logging out all sessions also ends the session you are currently using. Instructions: app sessions and web sessions.
When TOTP is the problem
If Upstox rejects an authenticator code, check that the phone’s date and time are set automatically and that you are using the current code from the correct authenticator entry. Upstox’s documented reset route requires access to the app: Upstox icon → My account → Profile → Time-based OTP (TOTP) → Reset TOTP. Enter the six-digit OTP sent to your registered mobile number, scan the new QR code in your authenticator app, enter the generated six-digit TOTP, and select Continue to enable. See Upstox’s TOTP reset instructions. If you cannot log in to the app, this route may be unavailable; ask support for the secure recovery process.
When the problem may be on Upstox’s side
A service-side issue becomes more plausible when the same error appears on both app and web, on both Wi-Fi and mobile data, for multiple users at the same time. Check status.upstox.com and Upstox Support’s official account for current notices. Do not treat an old announcement as proof of a current outage.

The phrase “not a valid account number” also needs context. A September 5, 2022 Upstox announcement associated that wording with an exchange disabling trading for some accounts for procedural reasons. That is a historical explanation, not evidence that your account is currently affected; ask support whether the message concerns login, activation, trading permission, or an exchange restriction. Escalate if both channels fail, OTPs never arrive or are repeatedly rejected, PIN reset does not work, the account appears frozen or restricted, you see a security warning, or the problem continues after the official app and browser steps. Upstox’s contact page states a response time of 24–48 business hours and lists phone support at 022-41792999 and email at [email protected]: contact Upstox.
Include the exact error text, a screenshot or recording, date and approximate time, app or web channel, device model, operating-system version, browser and version, networks tested, whether OTPs arrive, and whether another channel works. Never include your PAN, PIN, password, OTP, or full account credentials in a public post.
Protect the account while troubleshooting
- Never share an OTP, PIN, password, PAN details, or authenticator code with anyone claiming to provide support.
- Do not call numbers found in unofficial comments or advertisements.
- Do not install remote-access software or grant device control to a supposed agent.
- Use only official Upstox domains and support channels.
- Stop after a few failed PIN attempts; Upstox’s documented five-attempt threshold can block the account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Upstox keep sending me back to the login screen?
Clear the browser’s cookies and cached files, retry in a private window, and end old sessions through Manage sessions if you can access another channel. If both app and web redirect, contact Upstox.

Can I log in to Upstox without the app?
Yes, you can use the web portal with its normal authentication or QR login, but QR login requires access to the Upstox app. If the app is inaccessible, use the web flow or contact support.
What if I cannot reset TOTP because I cannot log in?
Upstox’s documented TOTP reset starts inside the logged-in app. Do not keep reinstalling or changing credentials; contact Upstox for account-specific recovery.
How long does Upstox support take to respond?
Upstox’s contact page says its team will respond within 24–48 business hours. That is a stated response target, not a guarantee that every issue will be resolved in that time.
