Aavid Thermal Products Inc. changed its name to Aavid Thermalloy LLC in early 2000 after Aavid Thermal Technologies acquired Thermalloy Inc., a heat-sink supplier formerly owned by Bowthorpe. The change reflected the purchase and combined thermal-management businesses; it was not simply a new name for an unchanged product line.
Why did Aavid Thermal change its name?
Aavid Thermal Products adopted the Aavid Thermalloy name after its parent, Aavid Thermal Technologies, bought Thermalloy. EE Times reported that Aavid paid $79.5 million for Thermalloy and described the deal as a way to expand Aavid’s global operations and add Thermalloy’s cooling expertise. EE Times’ 2000 report and a separate report on the name change document the transaction and the resulting Aavid Thermalloy identity.
The scale helps explain the strategic rationale. EE Times reported that Aavid Thermal had sales of $209 million in 1998; after the deal, Aavid Thermalloy had 13 manufacturing plants serving Asia, Europe and North America. Those figures describe the companies at the time, not current sales or facilities.
What was Thermalloy, and what did Aavid Thermalloy make?
Thermalloy was a heat-sink supplier previously owned by Bowthorpe. Aavid Thermalloy’s business extended beyond heat sinks: a 2006 SEC filing lists heat sinks, interface materials, attachment accessories, heat spreaders, liquid-cooling devices and phase-change devices used with microprocessors and industrial electronics. The SEC filing establishes product categories, but does not provide a single comparative performance table for these products.

For a buyer comparing electronics heat sinks or mounting accessories, relevant specifications include mounting compatibility, dimensions, thermal resistance or cooling capacity, material and finish, airflow conditions, and the power of the component being cooled. A category name alone is not enough to determine whether one product will suit a particular system.
What happened to Aavid Thermalloy afterward?
- 2009: Aavid Thermalloy agreed to distribute Advanced Thermal Solutions’ maxiFLOW heat sinks and maxiGRIP attachment systems. EE Times reported the distribution agreement.
- 2011: Nautic Partners announced it had acquired Aavid Thermalloy, describing the business’s applications in servers, telecommunications, alternative energy, industrial electronics and medical electronics. Nautic Partners’ announcement records that ownership milestone.
- 2017: Boyd Corporation completed its acquisition of Aavid Thermalloy and said the business would operate as a Boyd division. Boyd’s announcement describes the transaction.
These milestones establish the historical ownership changes through Boyd’s 2017 acquisition. They do not, by themselves, establish current product availability, catalog details or later corporate ownership.
