Samsung Electronics is a publicly traded company owned by its shareholders; no single person owns it outright. Samsung Life Insurance was its largest disclosed shareholder, with 8.41% of common shares as of March 31, 2026. The Lee family does not hold a majority of Samsung Electronics, but it controls the wider Samsung business group through key affiliates, especially Samsung C&T.
That distinction matters: “Samsung” can mean Samsung Electronics, the broader network of Samsung-affiliated companies, or the brand used by those separate businesses. The ownership figures below are dated because shareholdings can change; the detailed figures are from official company materials dated March 31, 2026 unless otherwise noted.
What does “Samsung” mean?
Samsung is not one corporation with a single owner register. The name commonly refers to three different things:
- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is the listed technology company behind products and businesses including semiconductors, smartphones, televisions and appliances.
- Samsung Group is a broader network of separately incorporated Samsung-affiliated companies, including Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, Samsung Life Insurance, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Biologics and Samsung Heavy Industries.
- The Samsung brand is used by multiple companies; it is not itself a single publicly traded company with one shareholder list.
Samsung Electronics is listed on the Korea Exchange, according to Samsung’s listing information. So the answer to “Who owns Samsung?” depends on whether you mean the listed electronics company or the wider business group.

Who are Samsung Electronics’ largest shareholders?
Samsung’s interim report gives detailed common-share holdings as of March 31, 2026. The year-end 2025 figures in the 2026 annual meeting materials also identify major holders; because the dates differ, the figures should not be treated as a single-date ranking.
| Shareholder | Stake or position | Date and basis |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Life Insurance | 8.41% of common shares | March 31, 2026; Samsung Electronics interim report |
| Samsung C&T | 5.05% of common shares | March 31, 2026; Samsung Electronics interim report |
| National Pension Service of Korea | 7.8% | End of 2025; Samsung 2026 AGM materials |
| Citibank N.A. | 2.9% | End of 2025; Samsung 2026 AGM materials |
| Norges Bank | 1.7% | End of 2025; Samsung 2026 AGM materials |
The March 31 figures come from Samsung Electronics’ first-quarter 2026 interim report. The year-end 2025 shareholder figures are from its 2026 annual general meeting reference materials. Samsung Life Insurance was the largest disclosed common-share holder in those materials, but its 8.41% stake is not a majority.

The March 31, 2026 interim report listed these direct common-share stakes:

| Person | Samsung Electronics common shares |
|---|---|
| Lee Jae-yong | 1.65% |
| Hong Ra-hee | 1.49% |
| Lee Boo-jin | 0.71% |
| Lee Seo-hyun | 0.77% |
Samsung’s reported “major shareholders and related parties” group held 19.71% of common shares and 0.10% of preferred shares on that date. That group total is not the Lee family’s personal ownership: it includes affiliate companies, foundations and other related parties as well as individual family members. Adding the listed personal percentages to the group total would double-count holdings.

Why does Samsung C&T matter?
Lee family influence is easier to understand by looking beyond direct Samsung Electronics shares. Samsung C&T is a strategically important affiliate: the Lee family and related parties held 38.1% of its common shares as of March 31, 2026. Lee Jae-yong held 22.0%, Lee Boo-jin 6.4% and Lee Seo-hyun 7.2%, with foundations and other related parties holding additional shares. Samsung C&T reports its ownership structure on its investor relations site.
Samsung C&T in turn held 5.05% of Samsung Electronics and 19.34% of Samsung Life Insurance as of March 31, 2026, according to Samsung Electronics’ interim report. The result is a network of positions, rather than a single family member owning most of the operating company.

Does the Lee family control Samsung Electronics?
“Control” here describes practical influence over a wider corporate group, not majority ownership of Samsung Electronics. The family’s position combines direct holdings with stakes held through Samsung C&T, Samsung Life Insurance, other affiliates, foundations and related parties. Samsung reported that major shareholders and related parties held about 20% of common shares at the end of the first quarter of 2026, while foreign investors held about 47%, according to its ownership structure summary.
A roughly one-fifth block does not automatically guarantee control of every shareholder vote. Practical influence also depends on which shares can vote, board elections, shareholder-meeting participation, the dispersion of other holdings and applicable rules. The National Pension Service is a major institutional investor; the cited company materials do not establish it as an ally of the Lee family.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do voting rights complicate ownership percentages?
A share percentage is not always the same as a percentage of votes available at a shareholder meeting. Samsung’s 2026 AGM materials state that preferred shares do not carry ordinary voting rights, treasury shares do not vote, and some affiliate-held shares face voting limitations under Korean law.

At the end of 2025, Samsung Electronics reported 5,229,163,926 shares with voting rights after excluding treasury shares, preferred shares and shares subject to voting restrictions. That voting-share count differs from the total number of issued shares. As a result, calculating effective voting influence requires more than dividing a holder’s shares by all issued shares.
What changed after March 31, 2026?
The March 31 ownership table is a dated snapshot, not a real-time register. Samsung’s interim report records that it completed cancellation of 73,359,314 common shares and 13,603,461 preferred shares on April 2, 2026. It also reports that a disposal trust involving part of Hong Ra-hee’s holdings was completed on April 9, 2026.
Share cancellations can change shareholders’ percentage stakes even when those holders do not buy more shares, and sales can change individual holdings. For later ownership changes, consult Samsung’s shareholder-meeting materials and the relevant filings through Korea’s DART disclosure system; the figures above should not be read as an August 2026 or live ownership register.
