Hyundai Motor Group is Boston Dynamics’ controlling owner, with an 80% stake; a SoftBank affiliate holds the remaining 20%, according to Boston Dynamics’ current FAQ. Hyundai said on July 16, 2026, that its shareholders were pursuing SoftBank’s entire interest after SoftBank exercised a contractual put option. That proposed buyout was still subject to approvals and settlement procedures and had not been publicly confirmed as completed by August 18, 2026. Robert Playter is Boston Dynamics’ CEO.

That distinction matters: “controlled by Hyundai” is accurate today, while “wholly owned by Hyundai” is not yet supported by the latest official ownership information.

Who owns Boston Dynamics today?

Boston Dynamics’ published ownership structure is:

Owner Stake What it means
Hyundai Motor Group 80% Controlling owner
SoftBank affiliate 20% Minority owner

Boston Dynamics describes itself as an independent business within Hyundai’s portfolio, rather than as a robotics division folded into Hyundai’s automotive operations. The company’s FAQ remains the clearest public statement of the 80%/20% split: Boston Dynamics FAQ.

Hyundai’s July 16, 2026 announcement says shareholders are pursuing SoftBank’s remaining stake. It describes a transaction in progress, not a completed transfer. The statement refers to internal approvals, applicable approvals, settlement procedures and further decisions by the parties: Hyundai’s announcement.

Is Hyundai buying the rest of Boston Dynamics?

Yes, Hyundai has said it is pursuing SoftBank’s entire 20% interest after SoftBank exercised a contractual put option. But no final purchase price or closing announcement was included in that statement. Until an authoritative closing notice appears, the defensible description remains 80% Hyundai, 20% SoftBank.

The eventual outcome could make Hyundai the sole owner, but readers should not treat the proposed transaction as settled merely because Hyundai already controls the company.

Who runs Boston Dynamics?

Robert Playter is the CEO

Robert Playter is Boston Dynamics’ operational chief executive. The company identifies him as CEO in its coverage of the electric Atlas platform, and its history says he joined soon after the 1992 founding: Boston Dynamics on Robert Playter and Atlas.

Marc Raibert is the founder and former longtime CEO

Marc Raibert founded Boston Dynamics after spinning it out of the MIT Leg Laboratory. His work on balance, legged locomotion and dynamic movement established the technical identity that still distinguishes the company. SoftBank’s 2017 acquisition announcement identified Raibert as founder and CEO at that time: SoftBank’s 2017 announcement.

Hyundai’s group leadership is separate

Hyundai Executive Chair Euisun Chung was closely associated with the acquisition and the group’s robotics strategy, but that does not make him Boston Dynamics’ day-to-day CEO. Ownership, group-level strategy and operating management are separate roles.

Boston Dynamics ownership history

Period Owner or status Significance
1992 MIT Leg Lab spinout Raibert founded the standalone robotics company.
2013 Google/Alphabet Google acquired Boston Dynamics during its robotics expansion.
2017 SoftBank SoftBank announced an agreement to acquire the company from Alphabet.
December 2020 Hyundai agreement announced Hyundai and related parties agreed to acquire a controlling interest in a transaction valued at about $1.1 billion.
June 21, 2021 Hyundai 80%, SoftBank 20% The acquisition closed.
July 16, 2026 Proposed ownership transition Hyundai said shareholders were pursuing SoftBank’s remaining stake; closing was not announced.

Boston Dynamics’ company history supplies the founding and product milestones: Boston Dynamics About. The 2020 agreement was announced by SoftBank at this release, and the 2021 closing and valuation were announced at this release. Hyundai’s own closing announcement is available at Hyundai’s 2021 release.

What did Hyundai pay?

The 2021 transaction valued Boston Dynamics at $1.1 billion. That is a valuation for the transaction, not a disclosed per-share price or a public-market quotation. The official announcements do not provide every detailed financial term, and Hyundai’s 2026 statement did not disclose the final price for SoftBank’s proposed exit.

Accordingly, the $1.1 billion figure should not be presented as the price of a 100% purchase in 2026, nor should unverified buyout figures be treated as confirmed.

Why does Hyundai own Boston Dynamics?

Hyundai’s rationale is industrial integration rather than ownership of a famous robot-video brand alone. Its stated strategy combines Boston Dynamics’ robotics and artificial-intelligence expertise with Hyundai’s manufacturing, mobility and global supply-chain capabilities.

  • Robots for manufacturing and smart-factory operations.
  • Warehouse and logistics automation.
  • Production of robotics components and supporting infrastructure.
  • AI-enabled mobile manipulation and physical-AI systems.
  • Deployment and validation of robots inside Hyundai facilities.

The strategy is intended to create an end-to-end robotics value chain. It also gives Boston Dynamics access to a large industrial environment in which robots can be tested against real production and logistics requirements.

What does Boston Dynamics make?

Product Type Status Typical role
Spot Quadruped mobile robot Commercially available Inspection, site documentation, public safety, hazardous-environment work and data collection.
Stretch Warehouse case-handling robot Commercially available Loading and unloading cases in distribution centers and warehouses.
Atlas Humanoid robot Early commercial journey Industrial manipulation and manufacturing tasks.

Spot

Spot is sold for enterprise, industrial, public-safety and research deployments rather than ordinary home use. Buyers evaluate sensors, software, autonomy, integration and support for a specific operating environment. Product information is at the Spot page.

Stretch

Stretch is designed around warehouse and distribution-center case handling. It addresses a narrower, highly structured workflow than a general-purpose humanoid. See the Stretch page.

Atlas

Atlas first appeared in 2013. Boston Dynamics unveiled the fully electric product version on January 5, 2026: Atlas announcement. It is not equivalent to a mass-market consumer robot.

Hyundai says it plans to begin deploying Atlas at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in 2028 for parts-sequencing work, with possible expansion to component assembly by 2030. Those are announced targets subject to technology validation, operational readiness and business requirements, not guaranteed production outcomes.

Is Boston Dynamics owned by Google?

No. Google was a previous owner. Google acquired Boston Dynamics in 2013; Alphabet later sold it to SoftBank, and Hyundai became the controlling owner when the 2021 transaction closed. The company’s most famous videos span multiple ownership periods, which is why old references can be misleading.

Is Boston Dynamics owned by SoftBank?

Not as the controlling owner. SoftBank acquired Boston Dynamics from Alphabet in 2017, then transferred control to Hyundai in 2021 while retaining 20%. SoftBank’s put option and Hyundai’s proposed 2026 buyout could end that minority position, but the public record cited above had not confirmed completion by August 18, 2026.

Can you buy Boston Dynamics stock?

No direct Boston Dynamics stock ticker is available. The company is privately held, and Spot, Stretch and Atlas are products, not securities.

Investors can buy shares in public companies connected to the ownership structure, such as Hyundai-related listed companies or SoftBank, but that is indirect exposure, not ownership of a pure-play Boston Dynamics share. Hyundai Motor Group includes multiple affiliated companies, and the economic relationship could change if the proposed SoftBank buyout closes.

Can individuals buy a Boston Dynamics robot?

Boston Dynamics positions its products for commercial, industrial, enterprise and university-research use. The normal route is a sales inquiry, evaluation and deployment plan rather than consumer checkout.

There is no verified official public price for these robots in the cited material. Enterprise cost includes integration, sensors, software, training, support, safety work and ongoing maintenance, not just hardware.

Safety and acceptable use

Boston Dynamics’ FAQ says buyers must follow sales terms prohibiting use to harm or intimidate people or animals, use as a weapon, or configure a robot to hold a weapon. Violations can void warranty and service or update eligibility: company FAQ.

What could change next?

  • Hyundai may complete, amend or fail to complete the proposed purchase of SoftBank’s 20% stake.
  • Atlas may move from validation programs into broader factory deployment, or timelines may change.
  • Boston Dynamics may deepen integration with Hyundai manufacturing while retaining its stated independent-business status.
  • Spot and Stretch adoption will help determine whether the company’s commercial model expands beyond high-profile demonstrations.

The bottom line

Hyundai controls Boston Dynamics today with 80% ownership, while SoftBank retains 20% according to the company’s current FAQ. Hyundai is pursuing the remaining stake, but that transaction was not publicly confirmed as closed by August 18, 2026. Robert Playter runs the company as CEO; Marc Raibert remains its founder and defining historical figure. Boston Dynamics is privately held, so any public-market investment is indirect, and Atlas should be viewed as an emerging industrial platform rather than a finished consumer product.
