Why she interviewed Sam Bankman-Fried
After FTX collapsed in November 2022, Bankman-Fried spoke with Fong in extended phone interviews. CoinTelegraph reported that he answered her questions about the exchange, including an alleged backdoor. His interview answers were claims made by a central figure in the FTX story; they should not be treated as independent confirmation of the events he described. Fong later discussed how she reached Bankman-Fried, their conversations, her reaction to his trial, and the labels applied to her work in a November 2023 Unchained episode. Its episode description says the discussion included why she did not really consider herself a crypto influencer; that summary is not a transcript of her full remarks. Is Tiffany Fong a journalist or an influencer?
People have used different labels for Fong, including journalist, influencer, and content creator. The available accounts support describing her as an independent online content creator who reported on crypto events and interviewed people involved in them. They do not establish a formal newsroom role or provide enough detail to compare her verification and editorial practices comprehensively with those of a newsroom.

That distinction matters when weighing her coverage. An interview can provide access to a subject and document what that person said. It does not, by itself, verify the subject’s account. Keep Fong’s questions, Bankman-Fried’s answers, and facts established independently separate.
