The Ambani family is closely associated with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), a publicly listed Indian company founded by Dhirubhai Ambani and led today by his son Mukesh Ambani. The family is not the same thing as Reliance: the company has shareholders, and its business results are not a measure of the family’s personal wealth. This guide explains the family’s history, the roles its members hold in public company and foundation work, and what Reliance’s latest reported figures do—and do not—tell you.

Who is the Ambani family?

The Ambani family is an Indian business family whose public profile is closely tied to Reliance. Dhirubhai Ambani founded the business that grew into Reliance; his son Mukesh Ambani is chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Limited. Mukesh’s wife, Nita Ambani, leads Reliance Foundation, and their children Isha, Akash and Anant have public roles connected to Reliance.

Reliance Group’s account of its history says Reliance Textile Industries first went public in 1977. That is the group’s own account, rather than an independent history of the company. Reliance Group’s biography of Dhirubhai Ambani recounts the company’s early growth.

How did the Ambani family become wealthy?

The family’s business history is inseparable from the growth of Reliance, which expanded from early trading and textiles into large industrial and consumer businesses. Reliance’s official profile credits Mukesh Ambani with leadership in building its Jamnagar refining complex and expanding its organized retail and Jio businesses. Those are the company’s descriptions of his leadership, not independent rankings of individual contributions. Reliance’s profile of Mukesh D. Ambani gives its account of his career and role.

Reliance Industries describes its current activities as spanning energy and materials, digital services, retail, media and entertainment, green technologies, and artificial intelligence. The business’s size helps explain why the family is prominent, but company revenue, profit and market capitalization are not personal or family net-worth figures.

What companies does the Ambani family own?

It is more accurate to say the family is associated with Reliance than to say it “owns Reliance” without qualification. Reliance Industries Limited is publicly listed and has shareholders. A family member’s leadership position does not make the company a privately held family asset, and ownership percentages or control can only be described with a specified date and measure.

Who are Mukesh and Nita Ambani’s children?

Mukesh and Nita Ambani have three children: Isha, Akash and Anant. Reliance’s corporate history records that all three joined the RIL board in 2023. Their specific public roles differ, and a board appointment is not evidence of a settled private inheritance or succession plan. Reliance’s corporate history records the 2023 board milestone.

Isha Ambani

Reliance says Isha provides leadership and direction to its education initiatives and identifies her as vice-chairperson of Dhirubhai Ambani International School. The company profile lists education credentials from Yale and Stanford. These are company-published descriptions of her role. Reliance’s profile of Isha M. Ambani provides the details.

Akash Ambani

The sourced corporate milestone is his 2023 appointment to the RIL board alongside Isha and Anant. The materials cited here do not establish a fuller current portfolio for Akash, so it would be misleading to assign him additional responsibilities on that basis.

Anant Ambani

Reliance lists Anant as an executive director and describes board roles at Jio Platforms, Reliance Retail Ventures and Reliance Foundation. The company associates his work with new energy, sustainability and other large projects. These are Reliance’s descriptions of his remit, not an independent assessment. Reliance’s profile of Anant M. Ambani outlines those positions.

What does Nita Ambani do?

Nita Ambani is founder-chairperson of Reliance Foundation. The Foundation says its work includes rural transformation, health, education, sports, disaster response, arts, culture and urban renewal. Any claims about the reach or impact of those initiatives should be attributed to the Foundation unless supported by independent evaluation. Reliance’s profile of Nita Ambani describes her role and the Foundation’s areas of work.

How rich is the Ambani family?

The company figures above do not establish a current personal or family net worth. Revenue is money earned by a business; profit is what remains under the company’s accounting measures; market capitalization is the market value of a company’s shares at a point in time. None is interchangeable with an estimate of an individual’s assets and liabilities.

No current, comparable primary-source family net-worth figure is established here. Wealth rankings are date-sensitive and depend on methodology, so a figure should be accompanied by its publisher, date and method rather than presented as a timeless fact. Mukesh Ambani’s public corporate role and the scale of Reliance do not, by themselves, resolve the family’s personal wealth or private succession arrangements.

What Reliance says about its purpose

In the chairman’s statement in Reliance Industries’ Integrated Report 2025–26, Mukesh D. Ambani wrote: “Our vision is global, but our purpose remains deeply Indian.” This is his statement on behalf of the company, not an independent assessment of Reliance’s impact.
