He also flew to the International Space Station twice. His relationship with Martha Stewart is part of his public story, but its timeline and details come from Stewart’s recollections as reported by Vanity Fair, not from a direct account by Simonyi.
Who is Charles Simonyi?
Born in Budapest, Simonyi moved to the United States in 1968 to study at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering mathematics. He later earned a PhD in computer science at Stanford. Stanford’s account of his career describes a computer scientist whose work spanned research, commercial software and later entrepreneurial projects.
His importance is not that he personally wrote every line of software associated with his name. Rather, he helped develop an early graphical text-editing approach and went on to lead teams building widely used applications.
What did Simonyi do at Xerox PARC?
From 1972 to 1980, Simonyi worked at Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), where he contributed design and implementation work to Bravo, an early WYSIWYG text editor. WYSIWYG—“what you see is what you get”—means that text appears on screen in a form resembling its printed output. Stanford credits Simonyi as a co-creator of the first WYSIWYG text editor. Bravo is an important part of the history of personal computing because it helped demonstrate a more direct way to edit and view formatted text. It was research-lab work, not a Microsoft product, and it preceded Simonyi’s later role in commercial applications.
How did he contribute to Microsoft Word and Excel?
Simonyi joined Microsoft in 1981 and helped establish its applications effort. Institutional biographies describe him as chief architect of Word and Excel and as a leader who hired and managed the teams behind those products and Multiplan. That distinction matters: his contribution was both technical and organizational, rather than sole authorship of the finished programs. Computer History Museum

He left Microsoft in 2002 and founded Intentional Software, focused on software for knowledge processing and idea presentation. His career therefore moved from experimental interface design at PARC, to large-scale application development at Microsoft, to an independent software venture. Institute for Advanced Study
Why did Charles Simonyi go to space?
Simonyi’s interest in spaceflight took him to the International Space Station aboard Soyuz spacecraft in 2007 and again in 2009. The Computer History Museum calls him the fifth space tourist and the first tourist to fly twice. Computer History Museum

The flights connected his technology career with a highly visible personal pursuit: he went from building software used on Earth to living and working in orbit. The Institute for Advanced Study has discussed his experience aboard spacecraft and his return from orbit in 2009. Institute for Advanced Study
What was his relationship with Martha Stewart?
A 2024 Vanity Fair account of Stewart’s Netflix documentary describes their relationship as on-and-off from 1993 to 2008. The article recounts Stewart’s version of the breakup: she said Simonyi told her he planned to marry Lisa Persdotter, and she described the separation as a “second divorce.” Those dates and details should be understood as Stewart’s recollections relayed by the publication; they are not independently confirmed here by a direct statement from Simonyi or a documentary transcript. Their connection also intersected with his first spaceflight. A contemporaneous Washington Post report said Stewart watched Simonyi’s 2007 launch and attended the Soyuz docking at Russian Mission Control. The Washington Post

Yes, in the historical sense reflected by a 2007 Forbes estimate: the magazine listed his fortune at $1.0 billion and ranked him No. 891 on its billionaire list. That is a dated estimate, not a current net-worth figure. Forbes

Stanford’s account of an interview with Simonyi also captures a principle he recalled hearing from Bill Gates: “Profitability is a constant struggle. You have to struggle and work very hard, and you have to think in the long term.” In the same account, Simonyi says it is important to assess what is at the edge of what is possible and push the boundary further.
