Mike Fey became Mesosphere’s CEO on February 1, 2019, succeeding co-founder Florian Leibert. Mesosphere had announced the appointment on December 13, 2018; a February 5 report said Fey’s first day as CEO had been the preceding Friday.
When did Mike Fey become Mesosphere’s CEO?
The company’s December 13, 2018 announcement set February 1, 2019, as the start date. The February 5 article described Fey as having taken over the previous Friday, consistent with that date.
Who did Fey replace, and what was Leibert’s next role?
Fey succeeded Mesosphere co-founder Florian Leibert. Leibert had said he planned to recruit a CEO and was expected to shift toward work focused on customers, strategy, and technology. He characterized the transition as a move from founder-led leadership to an executive with experience leading larger companies into broader markets.
What experience did Fey bring to Mesosphere?
The 2019 article cited Fey’s senior roles at Symantec, Blue Coat Systems, and McAfee. Those security-company leadership roles were the background reported at the time of his appointment; they do not, by themselves, establish that Mesosphere planned to make security a larger part of its strategy. The article noted that Fey’s initial remarks offered few specifics.

What was Mesosphere’s business at the time?
Mesosphere was an enterprise software company known for DC/OS. The 2019 article described DC/OS as software based on Apache Mesos and running on Linux. That is the product context for Fey’s appointment, not a description of the company’s later or present-day offerings.
What did the appointment mean for the company’s financing?
The same February 2019 article reported company figures: a $125 million Series D announced in 2018, more than $251 million in total funding, and a reported valuation of $725 million. These were Mesosphere figures reported by the article’s author, Christine Hall; they are not independently verified here and should be read as historical figures, not a current valuation or funding position.

What happened to Mesosphere after Fey’s appointment?
In August 2019, Mesosphere announced it would become D2iQ and described a broader strategy involving cloud-native platforms, Kubernetes, data services, training, and professional services. Fey, then CEO of D2iQ, explained that the Mesosphere name no longer represented the evolution of the company’s strategy and services. The rebrand means the February appointment is a historical leadership change at Mesosphere, not a current CEO announcement for a company operating under that name.

The original article page now redirects to a publisher notice. That notice says Informa Tech brands merged with Informa TechTarget as of September 2025, but it does not establish the former company’s current leadership or operating status. The available historical sources therefore support the 2019 timeline, not a claim about who leads the company today or whether it still operates.
