There is no documented set of wallet settings that guarantees safe TAO staking. The practical approach is to verify who authorizes the stake, exactly which hotkey and subnet it targets, the amount and network, and the transaction’s confirmation status before relying on it. In the Bittensor SDK reference, the optional price-safety check is off by default, so do not assume it is active in your wallet or software.
Which wallet and keys are involved in a TAO stake?
The Bittensor SDK staking method uses a wallet for the coldkey that authorizes the stake, and directs the stake to a hotkey on a specified subnet. The amount is denominated in TAO. See the Bittensor SDK staking reference; it documents an asynchronous SDK method, not necessarily the controls or defaults of every wallet application.
Before signing, make sure the selected wallet is the intended authorizing wallet and that the destination hotkey and subnet are the ones you chose. The SDK reference says the hotkey can default to the wallet’s hotkey if omitted. If your interface fills in a destination or does not show it clearly, stop and establish what will be signed rather than treating a default as confirmation of your intent.
Bittensor’s local wallet provisioning tutorial illustrates separate wallets for subnet owner, validator, and miner roles. That example supports deliberate role and address selection; it is not a universal retail-wallet configuration or a complete production security checklist. Do not expose a coldkey secret to a third-party site or operator.

What should you check before signing?
Review the transaction details in the exact wallet or software you are using. Confirm each item rather than relying on a saved label or a previous transaction:
- Network: confirm the intended network is selected.
- Authorizing wallet: check that the expected coldkey wallet is selected.
- Destination: verify the complete target hotkey and subnet identifier, including any value the interface supplied automatically.
- Amount: confirm the TAO amount and units before approving.
- Transaction details: review what the signing prompt actually presents; do not approve a transaction whose destination or intent you cannot establish.
For address entry or funding, compare the complete destination address and network with a trusted source. The provisioning tutorial explicitly tells users to check the destination coldkey SS58 address before funding, in the context of a local development chain. This is a useful verification habit, not a formal mainnet security standard.

Should you enable safe staking?
The SDK reference documents a safe_staking option for price checks and a rate_tolerance parameter. In that reference, safe_staking defaults to false, while the documented default tolerance is 0.005 (0.5%). These are SDK parameters, not a guarantee that a wallet exposes them or uses the same defaults. Check the documentation for the software version and interface you actually use, and verify whether the control is supported and enabled before signing.
A tolerance is a transaction parameter, not a promise about future prices or a way to eliminate staking risk. The cited reference does not establish how any particular wallet displays or applies these settings. If the interface does not make the price check and its value clear, do not assume the SDK’s setting has been applied.

What do inclusion and finalization mean?
The SDK method documents waiting for transaction inclusion by default, with waiting for finalization available as a separate option. Inclusion means the transaction entered a block; finalization is a distinct, stronger completion condition the method can wait for. A “submitted” message or a temporary success notice should not be treated as proof that the intended stake is finalized. Wallet interfaces may use different labels or confirmation behavior.
Does staking TAO into a subnet involve alpha-token price exposure?
Yes. Under Bittensor’s Dynamic TAO guide, each subnet has TAO and alpha reserves, and subnet-specific alpha tokens are part of the staking mechanism. The reserve ratio determines the alpha price, which can change as staking, unstaking, and emissions alter reserves. Subnet selection therefore affects the exposure involved; a stake is not simply a fixed-value deposit, and the cited mechanics do not establish any return or guarantee that principal value will be preserved.

What security settings and recovery claims are documented?
The official references used here describe staking mechanics, transaction parameters, Dynamic TAO, and wallet roles in a local provisioning example. They do not establish current hardware-wallet compatibility, a supported signing device, coldkey encryption settings, seed-phrase format, backup media, or a complete recovery workflow. Do not infer device compatibility or a recommended setup from the SDK staking parameters. Wallet compromise, approving an unintended transaction, subnet-related price exposure, software variation, and chain conditions are separate risks; the documented controls do not eliminate them.
