Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor many India-first businesses, Cashfree is the strongest place to start: it publishes a 1.95% standard domestic rate, advertises a conditional 0% promotion for eligible new merchants, and offers payment links and faster-settlement options. Razorpay is a strong alternative when a broader payments toolkit matters more than the lowest published domestic rate. PayU is worth a quote for higher-volume merchants seeking custom terms, while Stripe is a specialist option for globally oriented businesses that can obtain access.
There is no universal winner. The right gateway depends on your business approval, customers’ payment methods, actual fees, settlement needs, recurring-billing requirements and technical setup. Public pricing does not establish which provider has the best success rate, uptime or support.

Quick comparison: which gateway fits your business?
| Provider | Best fit | Published pricing signal | Settlement signal | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cashfree | India-first ecommerce, D2C, payment links and marketplaces | 1.95% standard domestic rate; conditional 0% promotion for eligible new merchants signing up July 21, 2026–March 31, 2027 | Cashfree advertises default T+1 and international-card settlement in INR at T+2; account and payment conditions may apply | Confirm promotion eligibility and which payment methods and features are enabled. Cashfree pricing |
| Razorpay | Businesses wanting a broad payments and financial-operations toolkit | Its international page lists 3% for international cards and payment methods, plus applicable GST; confirm domestic pricing for your account | Standard domestic settlement is documented as T+2 working days, subject to approval and risk factors | Do not assume every international or recurring feature is automatically enabled. International pricing; settlement documentation |
| PayU | Established or higher-volume merchants seeking negotiated terms | Custom pricing based on volume, industry and business requirements; PayU advertises 150+ payment modes | Not stated on the cited pricing page | Ask for a written quote and a payment-method-specific fee schedule. PayU pricing |
| Stripe | Internationally oriented, engineering-led businesses, if accepted | 2% for cards issued in India and 3% for cards issued outside India; no setup or monthly fees on the standard plan | Not stated on the cited India pricing page | The India page currently displays “Request an invite”; it is not a default self-serve choice for every Indian merchant. Cashfree’s and PayU’s payment-mode counts are vendor-reported and are not directly comparable. Ask which methods are available to your category and account, and check their fees and technical availability.
What a payment gateway does—and what it does not
A gateway connects your checkout to payment methods and passes transaction information between your business and the payment provider. Related roles can overlap, but are not interchangeable:
#1 Best Overall
- Payment aggregator: collects and routes funds to merchants under its operating model.
- Payment processor: handles the technical processing of transactions.
- Payout platform: sends funds to vendors, sellers, employees or customers.
- Merchant of record: may take responsibility for billing, tax, refunds and regulatory obligations in relevant markets.
Do not assume a provider offers every role, or that using a gateway makes it your merchant of record. A global SaaS business may need separate tax, invoicing and compliance services.
Choose by business model
Small domestic ecommerce or D2C business
Start by comparing Cashfree’s published domestic pricing and eligible promotional terms with the quote and settlement cycle available to you from alternatives. Test the payment methods your customers actually use—especially UPI, cards, net banking and any relevant EMI option—on your own checkout. A low headline MDR is not useful if the method you need is unavailable or the settlement terms disrupt cash flow.
SaaS or subscription business
Shortlist Cashfree and Razorpay, then test the complete recurring-payment lifecycle: mandate creation, first debit, renewal, failed debit, retry, cancellation and refund. Supported banks, apps, limits and mandate methods matter more than a generic claim that subscriptions are supported.
Marketplace or platform
Compare payout APIs, split settlements, seller KYC workflows, reconciliation and any reserve or hold terms. Cashfree and Razorpay are starting points to evaluate; confirm the precise product and commercial terms for your platform before building around it.

Cashfree advertises payment links and developer and ecommerce integrations; Razorpay also offers payment links within its broader toolkit. A link is quick to deploy, but still check the fee, refund workflow and settlement cycle. Cashfree payment links
International SaaS or card-heavy business
If your business is Indian and needs to accept foreign cards, compare international acceptance, settlement currency, activation requirements and foreign-card fees. Stripe lists 2% for India-issued cards and 3% for cards issued outside India, but its India page currently asks businesses to request an invite. Razorpay documents international payment activation for Indian businesses and settlement in INR for the relevant flow. Neither fact makes a gateway a merchant-of-record service.
High-volume or enterprise merchant
Request written, comparable quotes from PayU and other shortlisted providers. Include the transaction mix, expected volume, refunds, dispute handling, settlement terms, support escalation and any reserve policy. PayU says its pricing is tailored to volume, industry and requirements; a public headline rate is not a substitute for a negotiated quote.
How to compare the real cost
Calculate the effective cost for your own transaction mix, not just the advertised domestic MDR. Include the fee on each payment method, GST on fees, international-card pricing, currency conversion, EMI or BNPL charges, refund treatment, disputes, faster settlement, setup or annual fees, minimum commitments, plugins and premium support. Ask whether a reserve or rolling hold can affect cash availability.

Treat promotions separately from standard rates
Cashfree advertises a 0% domestic MDR promotion for eligible new merchants signing up from July 21, 2026 through March 31, 2027, with stated GMV conditions. It is a time-limited offer, not the standard rate. Check the current terms for eligibility, transaction coverage, volume conditions and what applies after the offer. The published standard domestic rate is 1.95%. Cashfree pricing and offer terms
Get transaction-level answers in writing
- What is the rate for each method you expect to use, including UPI, domestic cards and international cards?
- Is GST charged on the platform fee, and are there other recurring or minimum charges?
- On a refund, is the original transaction fee returned? Are partial refunds supported?
- Are there dispute or chargeback fees, and how are evidence submissions handled?
- What does faster settlement cost, if available, and are FX or currency-conversion costs separate?
- Can a reserve or risk review delay funds, and what conditions trigger one?
Settlement speed and cash flow
T+1 or T+2 generally counts from the transaction day, but establish whether the provider means working days, which transaction event starts the count, and how bank holidays affect it. Settlement can vary by account approval, business category, payment type and risk review. International flows may take longer, and the settlement currency matters as much as timing.
- Razorpay documents standard domestic settlement as T+2 working days, subject to bank approval, business vertical and risk factors. Its documentation says international timing can be longer and directs merchants to their dashboard for the applicable cycle. Razorpay settlement cycle; settlement FAQs
- Cashfree’s pricing comparison advertises default T+1 settlement and INR settlement for international card payments at T+2. Treat these as provider-published signals, not a guarantee for every account or payment. Cashfree pricing and settlement comparison
Ask whether a faster option is available and what it costs. A faster payout can be worth more to a cash-constrained business than a small difference in transaction fees; compare the financing and operational effect, not just the rate.
Payment methods to verify before signing
Build a list around how your customers pay, then confirm each item is enabled for your business, platform and transaction type:
- One-time domestic payments: UPI collect and intent, credit and debit cards (including RuPay), net banking and wallets.
- Higher-ticket or flexible payments: EMI and buy now, pay later, where offered and approved.
- Offline or assisted selling: payment links and QR payments.
- Foreign customers: international cards, supported currencies and settlement treatment.
- Recurring charges: card mandates, UPI Autopay and eMandate/eNACH.
- Checkout formats: hosted payment pages, invoices and integrations with your ecommerce platform.
Cashfree advertises 180+ payment modes and PayU advertises 150+; these counts are vendor claims, not a measure of customer conversion or account-level access. They do not tell you the fee, success rate or recurring-payment availability of a particular method. Cashfree product coverage; PayU pricing and payment modes
Recurring payments need a separate evaluation
Ordinary checkout acceptance does not prove that renewals will work for your subscription. Ask about the mandate type, supported banks and apps, amount limits, retry and dunning controls, cancellation, failed-renewal events, upgrades and downgrades, and international recurring payments. Test the full flow with the exact amounts and customer methods you expect to use.
Razorpay documents recurring payments through cards, UPI Autopay and eMandate. Its documentation says UPI subscription charges are generally limited to ₹15,000 per transaction, with higher limits for certain merchant categories; supported banks and apps can change. Confirm your merchant category, amount and current bank/app coverage before relying on it. Razorpay subscription methods; supported banks and apps; subscription settings; subscription FAQs
International payments: identify which cross-border flow you need
- Indian business charging foreign customers: verify international-payment activation, card pricing, settlement currency, timing and any export, tax or reporting obligations relevant to your business.
- Foreign business charging Indian customers: check whether the provider supports your entity and the specific India-payment flow. Razorpay documents a separate flow for certain non-Indian businesses accepting Indian payments. Razorpay international payments for non-Indian businesses
- Global SaaS needing more than payment acceptance: determine separately who handles tax calculation, invoicing, fraud operations and merchant-of-record responsibilities.
Stripe advertises access to 195 countries, 135+ currencies and 100+ payment methods, while its India pricing page currently displays “Request an invite.” Those global figures do not establish that every method is available to an India-based applicant. Prepare for verification rather than assuming that signup alone guarantees activation. Providers may review the business, products, website or app, payment policies, bank details and transaction profile. Restrictions, additional documents, delayed settlement or a review can arise even after an application begins.
- Confirm that your business constitution and category are accepted, and ask about any prohibited or restricted products.
- Keep PAN and bank-account details consistent; prepare GST details where applicable.
- Publish clear refund, cancellation, shipping and privacy policies, and ensure your site or app accurately describes what you sell.
- Ask which documents are needed for international payments and for any RBI, FEMA, KYC or industry-specific requirements relevant to your flow.
- Ask what happens if review is paused or rejected, whether funds can be held during review, and what escalation route is available.
Cashfree advertises paperless onboarding and same-day setup in some cases; this is a vendor claim, not a guaranteed approval time. Razorpay states that settlements require KYC approval and full account activation. Cashfree onboarding; Razorpay settlement prerequisites
Integrations, refunds and operational reliability
Choose an integration path that matches your engineering capacity. Hosted checkout or a supported plugin is usually the quickest launch; custom checkout and APIs offer more control but create more responsibility for security, edge cases and maintenance. No cited public material establishes a provider as having the best API or reliability, so assess the workflows your operation will depend on.
- Check REST APIs, SDKs, hosted and custom checkout, and plugins for your platform, such as Shopify or WooCommerce.
- Review sandbox credentials, documentation, webhook signing and retry history, idempotency, and event handling.
- Verify support for refunds and partial refunds, payment-method configuration, reconciliation exports and dashboard reporting.
- For a marketplace, test payout, split-payment, seller KYC and ledger needs rather than evaluating checkout alone.
- Clarify full and partial refund processing, whether the fee is returned, how disputes are handled, and whether risk tools or 3-D Secure options meet your needs.
Cashfree advertises developer kits, ecommerce plugins, sandbox credentials and payment links. Razorpay’s subscription documentation points to dynamic bank and app lists, illustrating why a feature list should be checked at implementation time. Cashfree integrations; Razorpay supported banks and apps
Prevent and diagnose failed or ambiguous payments
A customer may see a debit even when your order remains pending; a webhook can be delayed or delivered more than once; and a refund or settlement can take longer than expected. Design your order system to reconcile these states rather than treating a browser redirect as proof of payment.
- Verify webhook signatures and make handlers idempotent so repeated events do not duplicate fulfilment.
- Do not fulfil solely because a customer returned to a “success” URL; confirm the payment status with the provider.
- Store gateway payment, order, refund and settlement IDs, along with event timestamps.
- Reconcile provider reports against bank credits and provide a manual review path for ambiguous transactions.
- For high-value or high-volume operations, consider a second payment method or backup gateway, accounting for the added integration and reconciliation work.
A practical way to make the final choice
Score providers against your own priorities rather than relying on a generic star ranking. These suggested weights are a starting point, not an industry standard:
| Criterion | Suggested weight | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Total effective cost | 20% | MDR, GST, refunds, disputes, FX and settlement fees |
| Payment-method coverage | 15% | Methods your customers use and your account can activate |
| Payment success and conversion | 15% | Your own production pilot data |
| Settlement and cash flow | 15% | Actual cycle, holds, faster-settlement cost and holidays |
| Integration quality | 10% | APIs, plugins, SDKs, webhooks and sandbox |
| Recurring billing | 10% | Methods, limits, retries and mandate lifecycle |
| Support and dispute handling | 5% | Contracted SLA, escalation path and account management |
| International capability | 5% | Eligibility, currencies, settlement and reporting |
| Compliance and onboarding fit | 5% | Business category, documents and review process |
Run a small pilot with the providers that pass your eligibility and feature checks. Compare your own payment outcomes, reconciliation effort and settlement experience; public pricing pages cannot establish comparative success rates or uptime.

Bottom line by decision
- India-first and cost-sensitive: start with Cashfree, but separate its standard rate from the conditional promotion and verify the offer terms.
- Need a broad toolkit: consider Razorpay and compare its product fit and T+2 working-day standard domestic settlement with your cash-flow needs.
- High volume and willing to negotiate: request PayU’s written quote alongside competing proposals.
- Global and engineering-led: evaluate Stripe only if you can obtain access and its India pricing and settlement model suit your flow.
- Recurring revenue or marketplace payouts: test mandates, failed renewals, payout and KYC workflows before committing to an architecture.
