Compare local shops and buying events with online dealers KEH and MPB, including quotes, shipping, inspections, and payment options.

You can sell an old camera to a local camera shop, at a camera-buying event, or through an online used-gear dealer. The right choice depends on your location, the camera’s condition, and whether you prefer cash, trade value, or avoiding an in-person trip. No city or ZIP code was provided, so a specific nearby shop cannot be named; share one if you want local recommendations.

Where can you sell an old camera?

Start by comparing a local camera shop or buying event with online dealer quotes. A local visit can make an in-person sale or trade possible; an online dealer can provide an estimate without requiring you to find a nearby buyer. Neither route is guaranteed to pay more. Compare actual offers for the same camera and condition.

  • Local camera shop: Ask whether it buys used cameras outright, offers trade value, and accepts your model and accessories.
  • Buying event: Some dealers hold in-person events. Check the event’s location and current details before making a trip.
  • Online used-gear dealer: Request an estimate, then check shipping, payment, and inspection terms before sending your equipment.
  • Private listing: Selling directly to another person is another possible route, but fees, policies, and protections depend on the marketplace and were not established here. Check the platform’s current terms before listing.

How do KEH and MPB’s selling routes compare?

Both companies describe ways to sell used gear, but their processes differ. These are the companies’ stated terms, not a price comparison or a guarantee that either will accept a particular camera.

Option Quote and inspection Shipping or in-person route Payment choice
KEH KEH describes an online quote; its sell page does not specify in the cited information whether inspection can change the offer. KEH describes free shipping, in-store service at its retail location, and local buying events. Confirm current details and geographic relevance before traveling. KEH describes a choice of digital cash payment or a trade voucher.
MPB US MPB describes a free instant quote based on model and cosmetic condition. Specialists inspect the gear after receipt and may increase or decrease the quote. MPB US describes free insured FedEx Ground shipping. The US instructions and shipping details may not apply outside the United States. MPB describes payment to the seller’s bank after receipt and inspection.

For current terms, see KEH’s sell page and MPB US’s sell-or-trade page. MPB’s US quote guidance explains that sellers enter the model and condition for an instant price, followed by inspection. Readers outside the US should check their regional MPB site.

How to compare offers fairly

  1. Identify the camera accurately. Note the make and exact model, whether it works, cosmetic condition, and which accessories are included. MPB says its estimate uses the model and estimated cosmetic condition.
  2. Get more than one quote when practical. Use the same description of the camera and accessories for each buyer so the offers are comparable. A quote is specific to the item and condition; no universal best-paying buyer is established.
  3. Compare what you actually receive. Separate cash from store credit or trade value, and check whether an inspection can revise the initial offer.
  4. Weigh convenience and terms. Compare an in-person visit or event with shipping arrangements, time, and effort. Confirm the buyer accepts your particular camera before packing it or traveling.
  5. Recheck live terms. Quotes, shipping procedures, service coverage, and promotions can change. KEH’s sell page may display time-sensitive trade bonuses; verify any amount and expiration directly on the current page.

What to do before handing over or shipping the camera

  • Make a clear inventory of the camera and included accessories, and describe its working and cosmetic condition honestly.
  • Ask the buyer how its inspection works and what happens if its final assessment differs from the initial quote.
  • For an in-person buyer or event, confirm the address, availability, and whether your model is accepted before setting out.
  • For a shipped sale, follow the buyer’s current packing and shipping instructions. MPB US describes insured shipping; check its live instructions for the applicable service and process.
  • Decide whether a cash offer or a trade voucher better fits your needs before accepting.

Why there is no single “best” place for every camera

A camera’s model, condition, working status, and accessories affect whether a buyer wants it and what quote it receives. An online estimate is not necessarily a final offer: MPB US says specialists inspect equipment after receipt and may adjust its quote. A local shop may suit someone who wants an in-person option, while shipping can spare a trip where there is no convenient local buyer. Compare quotes and terms rather than assuming one route pays more.
