You can usually print documents at a public library or a retail print counter such as FedEx Office, Staples, or The UPS Store. Check the specific branch before you go: hours, services, file-transfer options, and prices vary, and no provider is guaranteed to be the cheapest in every location.

Where can you print documents without a home printer?

Start with the nearest public library or retail print counter. Retailers describe options ranging from self-service machines to staff-assisted printing; libraries may also offer printing, but rules and access are set locally. Confirm that the branch is open and offers the service you need before making the trip.

  • FedEx Office offers self-service copying and printing at most, but not necessarily all, locations, as well as staffed help for more involved work.
  • Staples describes self-service printing and staffed assistance with documents and finishing.
  • The UPS Store lists digital printing and pickup, with services and accepted file types varying by location.
  • A public library is another place to check. Consult its official website or call the branch for current access rules, fees, and printing options; there is no universal library policy established here.

Campus labs, hotels, coworking spaces, workplaces, and local copy shops may be options where access is allowed, but ask the venue directly rather than assuming it serves the public.

How to choose a print location

Compare the specific branches on practical details, not just distance. There is no established cross-provider price comparison, and local prices and library rules vary.

  • Hours and availability: Confirm the location is open and that self-service or staffed printing is available.
  • Total cost: Ask about black-and-white versus color, paper size, and any finishing such as binding. Request a quote for a complex job.
  • File access: Check whether the branch accepts email, USB, cloud access, or a retrieval code, and whether it supports your file type.
  • Help and equipment: For unusual page sizes, layout problems, binding, or laminating, ask whether staff can handle the job and how long it will take.

What to expect at each retail print counter

FedEx Office

FedEx Office says its self-service copiers are available at most locations. The machines support common formats including DOC, PPT, PDF, JPG, GIF, BMP, and PNG, and can access files from USB or supported cloud accounts. Small-format choices include letter, legal, and tabloid; large-format printing is a separate service. Prices vary by store, and the machine uses payment preauthorization. See FedEx Office’s self-service printing details.

With Print & Go, you can email a file and use a retrieval code, or access a USB drive or cloud account at the machine. FedEx says codes usually arrive within minutes, may take up to five minutes, and remain valid for 10 days. Supported formats include PDF and common Office and image files; FedEx recommends PDF for best results. The company’s FAQ says, “Anyone can print using Print & Go without needing to sign in.”

For complex work, FedEx distinguishes self-service from full-service printing. Computer access is available only at select locations, and printing is charged separately. FedEx says files are erased from its workstation after the session ends; that statement applies to the described computer service, not to other providers or every aspect of document handling. Details are on its computer-access page.

The UPS Store

The UPS Store lists digital printing, black-and-white copying, color printing, binding, collating, and laminating. A location may accept files by email, CD, or USB/flash drive, but available services and file types differ by store. You can ask a branch for a quote by phone or based on the file, and check its estimate for completion and pickup through the printing FAQ.

Staples

Staples describes self-service machines that print from email or USB, plus staffed print advisors who can help with documents and finishing such as binding and laminating. Its in-store printing page displayed simple black-and-white prints “Starting at 24¢ per B&W page” when accessed in 2026. This is an advertised starting price, not a guaranteed branch quote or a comparison with other providers. Check the Staples in-store printing page and confirm the local price.

How to prepare your document

  1. Export the final version as a PDF when possible. This helps preserve layout. FedEx recommends PDF for Print & Go, and The UPS Store says PDF offers the best opportunity to meet quality and color expectations.
  2. Confirm how the branch accepts files. Ask about email, USB, cloud access, or a provider-specific upload and retrieval code, and verify that your file type is supported.
  3. Check the job details before sending it. Confirm page size, color or black-and-white, paper options, finishing, price, payment method, and expected completion time.
  4. Choose self-service or staff help. Simple pages are suited to self-service; ask staff about layout issues, unusual sizes, binding, or other finishing.
  5. Protect sensitive documents. Review the provider’s published privacy information and collect your pages promptly. Do not assume one provider’s workstation or file-handling policy applies elsewhere.
