Apple opened preorders for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the standard M5 chip and the M5 iPad Pro on October 15, 2025; both went on sale October 22, 2025. In 2026, buy them from Apple, Apple Authorized Resellers, or retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy and B&H Photo. This guide explains the launch prices, current buying choices, configuration traps and the real cost of an iPad Pro setup.
What happened to the preorder?
The preorder window ran from October 15 through October 21, 2025. The products became generally available on October 22, 2025, so any page still describing them as available for preorder is using launch-era language. Apple confirmed availability through its online store, Apple Store app, physical stores and Authorized Resellers (Apple’s availability announcement).
Which MacBook Pro does this refer to?
The October 2025 product was the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the standard M5 chip. It launched at $1,599 in the U.S., or $1,499 for eligible education buyers, in Space Black and silver (Apple’s launch announcement).
Do not confuse it with Apple’s separate March 2026 release: 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models using M5 Pro and M5 Max. Those higher-end machines are aimed at sustained workloads such as 3D, high-end video, large software builds, simulation and local AI processing (Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max announcement).

Where to buy
Apple
Start with Apple’s MacBook Pro store and iPad Pro store if you need a particular memory, storage, finish or cellular configuration. Apple also handles education pricing, Apple Trade In, AppleCare+ and (for Mac purchases made directly through Apple Retail) Personal Setup. Trade-in credit is an estimate until Apple receives and verifies the device.
Amazon
Amazon can be useful for discounts and delivery convenience, but check whether the listing is sold and shipped by Amazon or by a marketplace seller. Confirm that it is new, the model number and configuration match, and the return and warranty terms are acceptable.
Best Buy
Best Buy may offer store pickup, financing, trade-in and local returns. Verify that the exact SKU is available for pickup and that a sale has not expired.

What an iPad Pro setup really costs
The tablet price excludes productivity accessories. Apple’s launch prices were $129 for Apple Pencil Pro, $79 for Apple Pencil USB‑C, $299 for the 11-inch Magic Keyboard and $349 for the 13-inch Magic Keyboard. Both pencils work with the M5 iPad Pro.
| Configuration | Tablet only | + keyboard | + Pencil Pro | + keyboard and Pencil Pro |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11-inch Wi‑Fi, 256GB | $999 | $1,298 | $1,128 | $1,427 |
| 13-inch Wi‑Fi, 256GB | $1,299 | $1,648 | $1,428 | $1,777 |
These totals exclude tax, AppleCare+, cellular service and any storage upgrade. The USB‑C pencil reduces the pencil addition to $79. A 1TB or 2TB model can cost substantially more than the 256GB entry configuration, so compare like-for-like listings.

13-inch Wi‑Fi
The larger screen is better for drawing, split-screen multitasking and sustained keyboard use. It is also the more practical size if the iPad will replace a laptop for part of your day.
Cellular
Pay the cellular premium only if you regularly work away from reliable Wi‑Fi and do not want to tether to a phone. Include the recurring carrier charge in your budget.
1TB or 2TB
Higher storage is justified for large offline video libraries, professional creative files or demanding travel workflows. It is unnecessary for users who keep most files in cloud storage.

Choose the MacBook Pro when
- You need desktop-class multitasking, traditional desktop software, extensive file management or long coding and editing sessions.
- You want a complete computer without adding a keyboard or stylus.
- Your work involves sustained professional workloads that may justify M5 Pro or M5 Max.
Choose the iPad Pro when
- Touch input, drawing, reading, media consumption and low weight are priorities.
- Your workflow is tablet-first and compatible with iPadOS apps.
- You are willing to price the keyboard, pencil, storage and (if applicable) cellular service as part of the system.
Apple claims the M5 iPad Pro reaches up to 3.5 times the AI performance of the prior M4 model and up to 5.6 times the performance of the M1 model, and supports Wi‑Fi 7 through its N1 networking chip. Apple also claims up to 24 hours of battery life for the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro. These are Apple test claims, not independent benchmarks; actual results vary by workload and configuration.
How to compare a retailer deal safely
- Match screen size, chip, unified memory, storage, Wi‑Fi or cellular connectivity and finish.
- Check the Apple model number or part number, not just the product title.
- Confirm the item is new rather than open-box or refurbished.
- Verify the “sold by” identity, return window, restocking rules and warranty handling.
- Compare the final delivered price, including tax, shipping, accessories and any financing cost.
August 2026 deal coverage reported a 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro configuration around $1,848 on Amazon and $1,849 at Best Buy versus a listed price of $1,999 (TechRadar’s deal report). Those figures are time-sensitive, configuration-specific and not permanent pricing. Check the live retailer pages before purchase.
Bottom line
There is no remaining preorder opportunity: these products launched in October 2025. Buy the base-M5 14-inch MacBook Pro or an M5 iPad Pro from Apple when you need configuration control, education pricing, trade-in or direct support. Choose Amazon, Best Buy or B&H when a reputable seller offers the identical configuration at a verified lower price or more convenient pickup—but never trade away seller clarity, warranty coverage or return rights for a headline discount.
