TCGplayer Direct, eligible eBay listings with Authenticity Guarantee, auctions, and specialist dealers each work differently—and none guarantees that a card is worth its asking price or makes every purchase risk-free.
Which buying route fits your purchase?
Policies and eligibility vary by location. The details below reflect the primarily United States-facing policies available on October 4, 2026; check the current local policy and the exact listing before paying.
| Route | What the service says it does | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| TCGplayer Direct | TCGplayer says Pokémon singles fulfilled through Direct are checked at its Authentication Center. Its Safeguard covers eligible missing or not-as-described orders. Direct eligibility appears on product or listing pages and depends on availability at the center. TCGplayer Direct; TCGplayer Safeguard. | Confirm this specific card qualifies and will be in the Direct package. Check shipping and possible import costs if buying internationally. |
| TCGplayer Marketplace seller | Safeguard applies to orders, including missing or not-as-described claims. For suspected counterfeits, TCGplayer requires the card to be received for review before refund eligibility. Safeguard terms; counterfeit guidance. | Marketplace orders are not necessarily Direct-fulfilled. Review seller history, actual card photos, condition wording, shipping and tracking, and claim deadlines. |
| eBay Authenticity Guarantee | Eligible US listings receive a physical inspection; the service does not grade or regrade cards. Eligible listings display a badge. The US policy includes a $200 price threshold, approved graders for graded cards, and buyer and seller location requirements. eBay buyer information; eBay seller information. | Check that the badge appears on the actual listing and that card type, price, grader, and locations qualify. Review the return policy: some authenticated purchases are final sale, and transit-damage claims have a short reporting window. |
| Fanatics Collect Weekly or Premier Auction | Weekly Auction includes sports and TCG cards; Premier is curated for high-end collectibles. Fanatics states a 20% buyer premium. Its guarantee addresses whether the received card matches the listing image, description, and certificate number; it does not warrant the third-party grader’s assessment. Fanatics Collect; terms. | Read the listing and current terms, and include premium, taxes, shipping, and any vault withdrawal or fulfillment costs in your maximum spend. Sales are generally final except in limited circumstances. |
| Fanatics Collect Buy Now | Fanatics says Buy Now purchases have no buyer premium; sellers may allow offers. Shipping or fulfillment costs may still apply. Fanatics Collect. | Compare the total with relevant completed sales. A fixed price does not show that the price is fair. |
| Specialist local game store or dealer | TCGplayer says some local game stores specializing in trading cards can review a questionable card and offer an opinion. TCGplayer counterfeit guidance. | Ask for written condition and authenticity terms, return policy, provenance or certification details, and a receipt. Dealer protections vary. |
How to assess a specific listing
Match the exact card
Confirm the name, set, card number, language, edition or printing, rarity, and any variant or stamp. For a graded card, compare the label and certification number with the grading company’s lookup record, then compare the card in the listing photos with the lookup images if available. For a high-value purchase, prefer clear photos of the actual card over generic stock images. An image match is useful evidence, not conclusive proof.
Separate authenticity, condition, and value
These are different questions. An authentication check may assess whether an item matches what was ordered without assigning a grade. eBay explicitly says its Authenticity Guarantee does not grade or regrade cards. A grading label reflects the grading company’s assessment under its standards; it does not establish that the asking price is reasonable.

PSA’s guarantee applies only to eligible PSA-graded cards and is subject to active certification, exclusions, proof of purchase, caps, and remedies selected under its terms. PSA states a per-card cap of $250,000 and a lifetime cap of $500,000 per person. Depending on the case, its stated remedies may include buying an eligible card at a determined current market value or refunding a value difference in certain grade cases; it is not an unconditional cash-back promise. Read the current PSA guarantee terms.
Check condition evidence and price
Ask for well-lit front and back images, plus close-ups of corners, edges, surface, and holo pattern where relevant. Compare completed sales for the same card and printing, language, raw or graded status, grade company and grade, and condition. Account for sale date and total buyer-paid price. A steep discount—particularly in a bulk offer—is a reason to investigate rather than assume you have found a bargain; TCGplayer advises buyers to pause over huge discounts in its counterfeit guidance.

Get an informed in-person opinion
A local store specializing in trading cards may be able to review a questionable card and explain why it appears genuine or suspect. Ask about the reviewer’s experience and reasoning. Treat the opinion as useful input, not a guarantee or a substitute for written sale terms.
Understand recourse before you pay
Save the listing, photos, description, certification details, order confirmation, tracking, package, and seller or platform communications. Before checkout, find the deadline and process for reporting a missing item, condition mismatch, transit damage, or suspected counterfeit; also check whether the sale is final. Policies can change, so rely on the current terms for your location and purchase.

- TCGplayer: Its help page says missing and not-as-described claims must be raised within 30 calendar days of estimated delivery. Its suspected-counterfeit process requires TCGplayer to receive the card for review before refund eligibility. See the current Safeguard and counterfeit guidance.
- eBay: Its policy says transit-damage requests for final-sale cards must be opened within three days, subject to the policy details. Check the current buyer policy for the exact conditions.
- Auctions and dealers: Read the applicable sale terms before bidding or paying. Fanatics says sales are generally final except for limited circumstances; a dealer’s return and authenticity terms depend on that dealer.
On delivery, inspect the card promptly and keep the packaging until you are satisfied. Photograph any mismatch or damage and follow the platform’s stated reporting process rather than relying only on an informal conversation with the seller.
Set an all-in budget for auctions
Fanatics Collect states that its auctions carry a 20% buyer premium; taxes and shipping may be added. On that fee alone, a hypothetical winning bid of $1,000 becomes $1,200 before taxes and shipping. That example is arithmetic, not a market price. Include any insurance, vault withdrawal, or fulfillment charge that applies before setting your maximum bid. Fanatics says Buy Now has no buyer premium, though shipping or fulfillment costs may still apply. Check its current terms and the listing before committing.

When comparing a fixed-price listing, dealer quote, or auction result, use the total buyer-paid price and match the card’s printing, language, condition, grade, and sale date. A hammer price alone is not directly comparable to a fixed price that includes different costs or describes a different card.

For a qualifying eBay card, the badge indicates that the listing is included in that program, not that eBay has assigned a grade or judged the price. Its official page describes the eligible-item checkmark as the route into the authentication process. Verify eligibility on the precise listing; being on eBay alone does not mean a card is authenticated. For context, eBay’s page reports that PSA had certified more than 65 million items since 1991. That is an overall certification count reported by eBay, not a Pokémon-specific count or a measure of accuracy. eBay Authenticity Guarantee.
