Publicly available information does not establish his current corporate title, ownership stake, or financial position.
What is Dov Charney doing now?
Charney remains associated with Los Angeles Apparel, the clothing company he started after leaving American Apparel. Its official storefront currently lists clothing and shopping information. The site’s homepage says workers making featured hoodies earn “up to $25 an hour and no less than $17.25.” That is the company’s own statement, not independently verified payroll data.
Earlier reporting and a 2025 profile identify Charney as Los Angeles Apparel’s founder, but the reviewed sources do not confirm his precise current executive title or private ownership percentage. The active storefront establishes that the company is selling apparel; it does not establish Charney’s day-to-day role or the business’s revenue.
How did Charney go from American Apparel to Los Angeles Apparel?
American Apparel and the 2014 departure
Charney started American Apparel in 1989, according to Retail Dive’s company timeline. In December 2014, the company’s board removed him from his leadership role and appointed Paula Schneider as CEO. The company cited alleged violations of its sexual-harassment and anti-discrimination policies and misuse of corporate assets. Charney denied the allegations and challenged his removal. The reporting reviewed here does not establish a court finding that every allegation was true, so the dispute should be understood as allegations, company statements, denials, and litigation—not as a criminal conviction.

Bankruptcy and a new apparel venture
American Apparel entered bankruptcy proceedings in 2015–2016. Reporting says Charney pursued litigation and unsuccessfully sought to regain control. In 2016, he founded Los Angeles Apparel, returning to clothing production. In a contemporaneous LAist interview, he described his plan as continuing the former company’s spirit and manufacturing in South Central Los Angeles. That interview records his intention at the time; it is not an independent audit of current production.
In 2017, Charney told Retail Dive: “I believe in my workers, I believe in domestic manufacturing. I believe in fair wages. I believe in quality and craftsmanship.” He also said, “I can have a multi-billion dollar business if 1% of society appreciates what I do.” The latter was an expression of ambition, not a reported business result.

What is known—and not known—about his finances?
Biography.com reported in 2025 that Charney filed for personal bankruptcy in March 2022. Citing Bloomberg, the profile said his assets and debts were each reported as potentially reaching $50 million. Those figures concern a 2022 filing as covered in a 2025 article; they are not a current net-worth estimate. The sources reviewed do not establish his present financial position, Los Angeles Apparel’s revenue, or his ownership stake.
Why is Charney back in the news?
The 2025 documentary Trainwreck: The Cult of American Apparel renewed attention to the company and its founder. TV Insider reported in July 2025 that the documentary was streaming on Netflix at that time. Streaming catalogs vary by region and change, so that report does not confirm current availability. The same coverage said Los Angeles Apparel planned a SoHo store opening that summer; the sources reviewed do not confirm the store’s present status.
