Amazon Prime Day 2024 ran Tuesday, July 16, through Wednesday, July 17. In the United States, it began at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) on July 16 and lasted 48 hours. The event has ended; the prices, trials and card bonuses mentioned below are historical 2024 information.
Amazon made Prime Day deals exclusive to Prime members, although eligible shoppers could start a free trial. This guide explains the U.S. start time, early and invite-only offers, likely-value categories and a practical way to test whether a discount was genuine.

Prime Day 2024 start time by U.S. time zone
Amazon announced the event in Pacific Time, so it did not begin at midnight nationwide. “July 16–17” means the sale continued through July 17 after starting just after midnight in the Pacific zone.
| U.S. time zone | Start time |
|---|---|
| Eastern | 3:01 a.m. EDT, July 16 |
| Central | 2:01 a.m. CDT, July 16 |
| Mountain | 1:01 a.m. MDT, July 16 |
| Pacific | 12:01 a.m. PDT, July 16 |
These times apply to Amazon’s U.S. event. Other countries had their own participating markets and schedules; India’s event was listed for later in the summer. See Amazon’s announcement at Amazon’s Prime Day 2024 date announcement.

What Prime Day 2024 included
Amazon described this as its 10th Prime Day: a 48-hour, Prime-member event spanning more than 35 categories. Amazon announced more than 5 million deals worldwide, with new offers appearing frequently—sometimes every five minutes during selected periods. Those totals were Amazon’s promotional figures, not an independent ranking of the event.
Some lightning-style offers could sell out before July 17 ended. Ordinary Amazon promotions might have been available to nonmembers, but Prime Day-exclusive pricing required Prime membership.
Early deals, main-event deals and invite-only offers
Early deals
Amazon promoted influencer-led drops from July 8 through July 15, covering areas such as beauty, sports, home, fashion and electronics. An early price could disappear before the main event and did not guarantee that the same item would be cheaper later.

Main-event deals
Prime Day offers released during July 16–17 were subject to inventory limits and changing prices. Add worthwhile items to a watchlist, but verify the final price at checkout.
Invite-only deals
For selected products, Prime members could request an invitation before stock ran out. Amazon notified selected customers by email; requesting an invitation did not guarantee selection or availability.
What was worth considering
Amazon’s category announcements identify where deals appeared, not which products were independently the best buys. Use the following as a buying framework rather than a blanket recommendation.

Amazon devices and smart-home equipment
Promoted products included Echo, Fire TV, Fire tablets, Kindle Scribe, Ring doorbells, Blink cameras, Amazon Smart Plugs, eero mesh systems and Luna controllers. Amazon said selected products—including Ring Battery Doorbell Plus, Blink Outdoor 4 multipacks, Fire TV Cube, Kindle Scribe and eero Max 7 systems—reached their lowest prices at that point, an Amazon claim applying to those products and period.
- Compare the exact generation and bundle; older models are often discounted beside newer ones.
- Check whether Ring, Blink or other connected devices need a subscription for desired features.
- Choose eero hardware for your home size, construction, internet speed and number of simultaneous users.
Televisions, headphones, tablets and laptops
Amazon highlighted brands such as Sony and HP, plus TVs, headphones, speakers and tablets. Confirm the exact model number and compare its recent selling price rather than relying on a list-price percentage.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- For TVs, verify panel type, refresh rate, HDR formats, ports, screen size and operating system.
- For laptops, check processor generation, RAM, storage, display resolution and whether the configuration is retailer-exclusive.
- Compare the discounted model with its newer successor before buying clearance inventory.
Kitchen appliances and home goods
Air fryers, coffee makers, blenders, vacuums, KitchenAid products, storage, organization items, bedding and household basics were natural sale categories. Frequent promotions, short warranties, inflated list prices or poor durability can make a large percentage discount meaningless.
Rank #4
- Gift Card is redeemable towards millions of items storewide at Amazon.com
- Gift Card has no fees and no expiration date
- Gift Card is nested inside a specialty gift box
- Free One-Day Shipping (where available)
- Scan and redeem any Gift Card with a mobile or tablet device via the Amazon App
Beauty, personal care and fashion
Amazon promoted brands including Clinique, Allbirds, Kiehl’s, Coach, Supergoop!, Hey Dude, Keds, New Balance, Oakley and Sun Bum. Replenish products you already use rather than buying unfamiliar items solely because the percentage looks high. Check seller identity, packaging, expiration information and return restrictions; for apparel and shoes, confirm sizing and whether the deal is limited to an unpopular color or variant.
Back-to-school and college supplies
School and dorm categories included backpacks, stationery, coffee makers, desk accessories, printers, headphones and tablets. Amazon advertised up to 40% off selected Amazon Basics and Amazon Essentials products, alongside products from New Balance, HP, JanSport and Play-Doh. “Up to” applied only to selected items.
Outdoor, summer and fitness products
Promotions included Wilson and Joola sporting equipment and selected Stanley, Oakley, Sun Bum, Hey Dude and Keds products. Pickleball gear, drinkware, sunscreen, activewear, grills and patio items can be sensible purchases when they meet an existing need and have acceptable return and warranty terms.

How to tell whether a Prime Day discount was real
- Identify the exact model number. Match the listing to the manufacturer’s specifications and included accessories.
- Check recent prices. A “list price” and percentage-off label may not reflect the product’s lowest recent selling price.
- Review the seller. Confirm whether Amazon, the brand or a third-party seller is responsible for fulfillment, authenticity and warranty support.
- Read returns and warranty terms. Pay particular attention to electronics, beauty products, mattresses and oversized appliances.
- Calculate total cost. Include tax, shipping, required accessories, replacement filters, cloud storage and other recurring or proprietary costs.
- Compare generations. A slightly higher-priced current model may offer better support and longevity than clearance hardware.
- Buy for a real need. A discount is not savings if the item would not otherwise be purchased.
Did you need Amazon Prime?
Prime membership was required for Prime Day-exclusive deals. Amazon’s June 2024 announcement listed U.S. pricing of $14.99 per month or $139 per year and a 30-day trial for eligible customers; those figures are historical and should not be treated as 2026 pricing. Check current terms at Amazon Prime.
If joining solely for one purchase, compare the actual expected savings with membership cost and any value from shipping or streaming benefits. A trial can help eligible shoppers, but record the renewal date and cancel if continued membership is unwanted. Prime Student was advertised in 2024 with a six-month trial followed by $7.49 monthly or $69 annually for eligible students and young adults; eligibility and prices were specific to that announcement.
Historical 2024 card and subscription promotions
These offers expired and are not current recommendations:
- Amazon advertised a $200 Amazon Gift Card upon Prime Visa approval from June 27 through July 24, 2024.
- It advertised an $80 Amazon Gift Card upon Prime Store Card approval from July 12 through July 17, 2024.
- Both required approval and terms. A bonus is not a discount if interest charges result from carrying a balance.
- Amazon advertised five months of Music Unlimited free for eligible Prime members who had not previously tried it. Promotional subscriptions auto-renew unless canceled under the applicable terms; see Amazon Music Unlimited for current offers.
Buy with Prime at buywithprime.amazon.com was a separate checkout option on participating brand websites, not a guarantee of a Prime Day discount or the lowest price.
What to avoid
- Unknown brands with little independent testing or unclear warranty support.
- Listings with suspiciously high reference prices or vague model descriptions.
- Older electronics whose generation differences are not clearly stated.
- Connected products that require subscriptions you do not want.
- Bulky items with costly or difficult returns.
- Consumables likely to expire before use.
- Bundles containing incompatible or low-value accessories.
- Third-party listings with weak seller history or uncertain authenticity.
The Bottom Line
Prime Day 2024 was a completed U.S. event held July 16–17, beginning at 12:01 a.m. PDT (3:01 a.m. EDT). The strongest approach was to compare exact models and recent prices, then account for sellers, returns, warranties and recurring costs before treating any advertised percentage as a bargain.
