There is no single sign or exact day that tells you when it is time to say goodbye to your pet. A veterinarian can help you weigh your pet’s comfort, suffering, likely illness progression and care options; your close knowledge of your pet’s daily life is essential to that conversation. You do not have to make the decision alone.
How do I know when it’s time to say goodbye to my pet?
Start by asking whether your pet can still experience comfort and enjoyment, and whether distress can be relieved. Track what has changed over time rather than relying on one difficult day or one visible sign. Rebecca Ashman, RSPCA Head Vet, suggests asking: “Is my pet still enjoying their life?” That question can help focus a conversation, but it is not a test with a universal answer.
The timing differs between pets and families. Jane Sykes, professor of veterinary medicine at UC Davis and a board-certified small animal internal medicine specialist, explains that it depends on the pet’s medical condition, the bond, the resources available for care at home and access to veterinary care. Sykes, writing in The Washington Post on July 21, 2025, says: “Ultimately the decision is yours, but your veterinarian, trusted friends and family, and licensed mental health professionals can help.”
Which changes should prompt a veterinary conversation?
Changes in comfort, basic functions and engagement can signal that your pet needs a quality-of-life assessment or additional support. The American Animal Hospital Association’s end-of-life guidance, updated May 19, 2026, identifies concerns including difficulty breathing, persistent pain, trouble eating or drinking, difficulty standing or walking, withdrawal and repeated medical crises. The RSPCA’s pet-bereavement guidance also points to changes in appetite, mobility, behavior, confusion, restlessness and interest in favorite activities.

These are reasons to contact a veterinary professional, not a do-it-yourself diagnosis or a checklist that can decide the timing. Ask the veterinarian to consider pain, eating and drinking, breathing, elimination, mobility, and how your pet responds to caregivers and surroundings. Keep notes on good and difficult days, including what your pet can still do and what appears to cause discomfort.
What care options should I discuss?
Euthanasia is not the only care conversation. Which paths are realistic depends on the diagnosis, the pet’s symptoms, the measures available to ease distress and what care the family can provide. Options may overlap or may not be suitable for a particular animal.

| Option | What to discuss with the veterinarian |
|---|---|
| Veterinary-guided hospice or palliative care | Which symptoms can be relieved, what care is needed at home, how the illness may progress and when the plan should be reviewed. |
| Humane euthanasia | Whether it may prevent further pain or suffering, how the procedure works for your pet, and whether a clinic or home setting is available. |
| Hospice-supported natural death | Whether it is appropriate in this case and what veterinary measures will be used to relieve discomfort. Hospice must not mean leaving suffering unrelieved. |
AAHA advises that hospice be provided under veterinary guidance. If you are considering natural death with hospice support, ask the veterinarian to explain how comfort will be maintained and what changes would require a different plan.
How can I prepare for the appointment?
Bring written observations and questions. Ask for a plan that can be revisited if your pet’s condition changes, including who to contact and which changes need urgent attention.

- Is my pet suffering? What signs are you using to judge that, and what could relieve discomfort?
- What changes might occur as the illness progresses, and which changes mean I should call urgently?
- Could treatment, hospice or palliative care help? What would each involve for this pet?
- In this case, what are the advantages and disadvantages of euthanasia versus hospice-supported natural death?
- Could euthanasia take place at home or in a clinic? Is sedation appropriate, and what should we expect?
- What will it cost, and what arrangements are available afterward?
- How might we involve children or other pets in a way that suits our family?
Small changes at home may make a pet more comfortable, depending on its needs. AAHA’s examples include placing food and water within easier reach, reducing slippery flooring, providing comfortable bedding, choosing suitable litter-box placement, helping with hygiene and keeping the environment at a suitable temperature. Ask the veterinary team which adjustments are appropriate for your pet.
What happens during euthanasia, and where can it take place?
Availability, cost and procedure vary by location, provider, species and the pet’s circumstances. Ask your veterinarian about fees, whether a home visit is available, whether sedation is appropriate, what the family will see and what aftercare arrangements can be made. Neither a clinic nor a home setting is inherently the better choice; consider your pet’s condition and stress, family preferences, local availability, cost and practical arrangements.

For dogs and cats, the RSPCA describes a veterinarian sometimes giving sedation first, followed by an injection; breathing and heartbeat then gradually stop. The RSPCA notes that a gasp or eyes remaining open can be normal reactions. This is general preparation, not a guarantee of exactly what will happen in every case: ask your own veterinarian what to expect for your pet. Whether to stay during the procedure is a personal choice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What support is available when the decision feels overwhelming?
It is common to feel grief before a pet dies as well as afterward. In findings from its Pet Grief Survey 2025 reported on its guidance page, the RSPCA said 75% of owners experienced grief before their pet died and nearly 40% struggled with knowing when to euthanase their pet. These are RSPCA survey findings, not universal rates.

Rebecca Ashman of the RSPCA says: “Your vet’s there to help. You’re not expected to make this call on your own.” You can also involve trusted family or friends and, if grief is affecting your wellbeing, a licensed mental health professional. There is no fixed timetable for grieving. After a pet dies, the veterinary team can explain locally available burial, cremation or other arrangements. AAHA also suggests memorials such as letters, photo albums or journals, memorial trees, and jewelry or keepsakes.
