Equinix completed its acquisition of Telecity Group plc on January 15, 2016. Telecity became a wholly owned Equinix subsidiary in a cash-and-stock transaction Equinix valued at approximately $3.8 billion (£2.6 billion). The deal added more than 40 data centers and more than doubled Equinix’s European capacity, but European Commission clearance required eight overlapping assets to be sold to Digital Realty.
What Equinix bought and when the deal closed
Equinix announced a recommended scheme-based offer on May 29, 2015. Completion followed European Commission clearance with commitments on January 15, 2016, when Telecity became wholly owned by Equinix.

How much did Equinix pay for Telecity?
Equinix described the completed transaction as worth approximately $3.8 billion (£2.6 billion). Its closing disclosure broke the consideration into approximately $1.7 billion in cash and 6.8 million Equinix shares valued at about $2.1 billion.
Equinix’s 2016 Form 10-Q recorded purchase consideration of approximately £2,624.5 million, or $3,743.587 million. That accounting figure and the company’s rounded $3.8 billion description refer to the same completed acquisition, expressed with different precision and reporting conventions.

Why Equinix bought Telecity
The strategic case was European scale and interconnection density. Equinix said Telecity extended its interconnection platform into seven new European markets, added network and cloud density, and strengthened its ability to serve enterprises seeking highly interconnected global data centers.

The company did not publish a single post-close synergy, revenue uplift, or customer-count figure specifically attributable to Telecity in the cited transaction materials, so the deal’s documented rationale is footprint, market reach, and connectivity rather than a quantified synergy claim.
What happened to Telecity’s data centers after the acquisition?
Telecity did not remain a separate public company. After closing, it operated as a wholly owned Equinix subsidiary, integrating its European platform into Equinix’s business.

Integration was subject to a regulatory remedy. To address competitive overlaps, the European Commission required Equinix to divest eight facilities in three European locations: London, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt. Those sites were transferred to Digital Realty rather than retained in Equinix’s enlarged portfolio.
