Google agreed to buy Wiz because it wanted more than another security product: it wanted a multicloud security platform that could strengthen Google Cloud’s enterprise and artificial-intelligence strategy. The transaction was announced on March 18, 2025, for $32 billion in cash subject to closing adjustments, and closed on March 11, 2026. Alphabet later reported an accounting purchase price of approximately $29.5 billion after adjustments and excluding certain post-combination compensation arrangements.

That distinction matters. The $32 billion figure describes the announced deal value; the approximately $29.5 billion figure is the final accounting amount reported after closing. The announcement is documented in Google’s transaction statement and the original SEC filing. Completion and final accounting appear in Google’s closing announcement and Alphabet’s 2026 filing.

What Wiz actually does

Wiz is a cloud and AI security platform. Its central idea is to connect information that is often scattered among separate security tools: source code, cloud infrastructure, identities, permissions, data, network exposure and runtime activity.

That connection is represented as a security graph. For example, a company might have a publicly reachable workload containing a vulnerability, an identity with excessive permissions and sensitive data reachable through that identity. Rather than treating those as unrelated alerts, Wiz attempts to show how they could form a realistic attack path and prioritize the risk by business impact.

Google Pixel 11 Pro - Unlocked Smartphone, Gemini - 256 GB - Obsidian
  • Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
  • Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
  • Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
  • Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]

The platform spans several security categories:

  • Cloud security posture and configuration management
  • Vulnerability and exposure management
  • Identity and permissions analysis
  • Data and workload visibility
  • Application and code security
  • Runtime detection and response
  • Security monitoring for AI workloads and applications

Google’s Wiz product page describes agentless visibility across cloud and AI environments, code-to-cloud coverage and Wiz Defend’s lightweight eBPF runtime sensor. These functions overlap several industry categories, including CSPM, CNAPP, DSPM, ASPM and cloud detection and response; those labels should not be treated as interchangeable.

Why Google wanted Wiz

Multicloud security

Large organizations commonly use AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud, private infrastructure and on-premises systems at the same time. A security product limited to one provider can therefore look incomplete.

Google says Wiz will continue supporting Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud Platform. That multicloud reach is strategically important: Google can sell security to a company even when much of that company’s computing runs elsewhere. It also explains why this was not simply an effort to add another Google-only control panel.

A larger role in enterprise security budgets

Cloud infrastructure decisions are increasingly influenced by CISOs and security teams. Wiz gives Google Cloud a recognizable security platform that can enter those conversations directly, potentially alongside Google Security Operations, Google Threat Intelligence, Mandiant services and cloud infrastructure.

Google Pixel 10a - 30+ Hours Battery, Camera Coach, Gemini - Obsidian 128GB
  • Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
  • The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

The product-plus-distribution fit is an analytical interpretation rather than a disclosed financial target. Google contributes an enterprise sales force, Marketplace channels and a broader security portfolio; Wiz contributes a cloud-native product and an established customer base.

Protecting AI systems

Google has framed the acquisition around the expanding attack surface created by AI. In practical terms, “AI security” can mean several different things:

  • Discovering AI applications, models, pipelines and supporting infrastructure
  • Finding exposed data, weak permissions and misconfigurations around those systems
  • Protecting training and inference data
  • Governing access to models and tools
  • Detecting prompt injection, data leakage and model abuse
  • Using AI to prioritize findings or assist security operations

The acquisition does not automatically solve those problems. It gives Google a platform on which to combine Wiz’s visibility with Gemini, threat intelligence and security operations capabilities.

Why pay $32 billion?

The price reflected strategic control over a scarce asset, not simply Wiz’s current revenue. Google was buying a fast-growing enterprise-security company, a multicloud position, a recognized brand and the possibility of integrating the platform with Google’s AI and threat-intelligence systems.

Milestone What was reported
Announcement March 18, 2025
Announced consideration $32 billion in cash, subject to closing adjustments
Closing March 11, 2026
Final accounting purchase price Approximately $29.5 billion after purchase-price adjustments, excluding certain post-combination compensation arrangements
Preliminary allocation Approximately $22.689 billion of goodwill and $8.3 billion of intangible assets

Alphabet reported the acquisition in the Google Cloud segment. The filings do not provide a sufficiently complete, independently verified basis for publishing a transaction multiple, so a precise revenue-to-price calculation would be misleading.

What Google brings to Wiz

Google says the combined platform will connect Wiz’s cloud-security capabilities with:

  • Google Cloud infrastructure and distribution
  • Google Security Operations
  • Google Threat Intelligence
  • Mandiant consulting and incident-response expertise
  • Gemini and other AI capabilities
  • Google Cloud Marketplace and partner channels

Mandiant is a particularly logical complement. Wiz can identify exposure and likely attack paths, while Mandiant brings threat intelligence, consulting and incident-response experience. Google has not specified every operational boundary between the products, so the degree of integration remains a matter for future execution.

What Wiz contributes

Wiz brings an agentless, cloud-native visibility model, a security graph, coverage spanning posture, code, exposure and runtime, multicloud support and a product designed for security and engineering teams. It also had an existing Google Cloud relationship and Marketplace presence before the acquisition.

Wiz’s commercial model is modular. Its pricing page says licensing can scale according to factors such as workloads, active developers, log ingestion or sensors, but it displays no public list prices and directs buyers to request a custom quote. Its Google Cloud environment page describes Marketplace availability; whether a customer’s eligible cloud-commitment spend can be applied depends on the applicable agreement.

What changes for Wiz customers?

Google says Wiz will retain its brand, continue supporting the major public clouds and keep working with other security providers through Google Cloud Marketplace. Google also says it will support packaged and SaaS applications as well as on-premises workloads. Wiz’s own closing announcement maintains the multicloud and AI-security positioning.

Those are stated commitments, not proof of how the product will behave over many years. Customers should ask:

  • Does the contract guarantee feature and support parity for AWS, Azure and Oracle?
  • What telemetry is collected, retained or shared across Google products?
  • Can the customer opt out of cross-service data use?
  • Are findings exportable to the existing SIEM, ticketing and response tools?
  • How are runtime sensors, log ingestion and other usage units priced?
  • Will discounts require a Google Cloud commitment?
  • What happens to integrations if the customer does not buy other Google services?
  • Are data-residency options, compliance attestations and independent testing available?

The antitrust and competition question

The concern is not merely that Google bought a cybersecurity vendor. It is whether ownership of a widely used multicloud security intermediary could let Google favor its own cloud.

  • Google Pixel 7 has wide and ultrawide lenses with up to 8x Super Res Zoom[5]; and Cinematic Blur brings more drama to your videos

Potential risks include preferential recommendations, bundled pricing, reduced interoperability, restrictions on data portability or sensitive visibility into customers’ AWS and Azure environments. Google’s counterargument is that Wiz remains available across clouds, customers retain choice and the security market remains competitive.

The deal’s completion confirms that closing conditions were satisfied, but the public materials used here do not establish a complete regulatory timeline or specific remedies. It would be premature to declare the transaction anticompetitive without identified regulator findings.

How to judge whether the acquisition succeeds

The acquisition will be more convincing if Google can demonstrate all of the following:

  • Wiz retains strong AWS, Azure and Oracle functionality.
  • Customers can adopt Google’s broader security stack without losing portability or choice.
  • Wiz reduces alert noise and improves remediation speed through meaningful attack-path context.
  • Product velocity and startup-level usability survive integration into Google.
  • Google turns the combined security capabilities into durable enterprise-cloud growth.
  • Customers do not face unexpected lock-in, price increases or weaker third-party integrations.

For buyers, Wiz is most compelling when an organization needs a unified view across several clouds and wants development, cloud and runtime risks connected. It is less compelling for a small, simple, single-cloud environment or a team that requires transparent, self-service pricing.

The Bottom Line

Google was buying strategic control of a major security layer for the multicloud and AI era. Wiz supplies cloud-neutral visibility and attack-path analysis; Google supplies scale, threat intelligence, AI, Mandiant and distribution. The deal succeeds only if Google can add those resources without undermining the neutrality, integrations and product speed that made Wiz valuable.
