It said an unnamed extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) technology startup was seeking $5 million and discussing its work with ASML. The surviving record does not reliably identify the company, confirm that it raised the money, or show that ASML invested, acquired it, or signed a formal partnership.
What the 2012 report actually says
The surviving page, titled “EUV startup is seeking $5 million”, is dated July 10, 2012. Its accessible summary connects the financing need to EUV development and says the startup was in discussions with ASML, the leading maker of EUV lithography systems.
- The company was described only as an EUV-related startup.
- The reported target was $5 million.
- The report referred to discussions with ASML.
- The page is a secondary or republished industry-news record rather than a readily available company announcement.
“Seeking” describes a fundraising objective, not money received. Likewise, “in talks” does not establish a signed investment, supply agreement, license, acquisition or partnership.
Who was the startup?
The available record does not identify the company clearly enough to support a definitive name. There is no responsible basis for calling it xLight, Substrate, the historical EUV LLC consortium or any other better-known organization.

- Practical Stem Education Tool: a valuable teaching tool for STEM education, this semiconductor substrate helps illustrate how integrated circuits are manufactured; Great for classrooms, labs, or personal learning, it allows students to better understand wafer structure, fabrication processes, and the foundation of modern electronics in a tangible way
- Tech-inspired Gift: combining science and art, this silicon wafer makes a unique gift for engineers, programmers, students, and tech lovers, suitable for various gifting occasions without being overly decorative
xLight is a much later company. Reuters reported in 2025 that it raised $40 million to develop an EUV laser source and targeted an operational prototype in 2028. Substrate is later still and has reportedly pursued a different lithography approach with funding far above $5 million. Neither comparison identifies the 2012 company.
The startup’s identity, fundraising outcome and eventual fate therefore remain unverified from the surviving sources.
What “talks with ASML” could have meant
A small company can speak with ASML for several very different reasons:
Rank #2
- 5 x 5 inches, 0.67 ounces, 0.03 inches thick. Some wafers are marked with alignment marks.
- The pattern is produced by light diffraction, and its reflective appearance changes with the viewing angle.
- Silicon wafers are fragile—please handle with care.
- Circuit details can be examined under a microscope.
- technical evaluation of a component or subsystem;
- supplier qualification;
- licensing or intellectual-property discussions;
- ordinary commercial negotiations;
- possible investment or collaboration discussions.
Only a signed agreement or a direct company disclosure would establish which applied. Technical contact is not the same as a formal business relationship. Reuters’ later xLight report illustrates the distinction: ASML technical leaders supplied performance requirements for a laser that might be evaluated for ASML machines, but Reuters explicitly said the two companies did not have a formal business partnership.
What the startup was probably trying to solve
EUV lithography uses extreme-ultraviolet light to print tiny circuit patterns on silicon wafers. A production scanner is an integrated system containing a light source, reflective optics and mirrors, vacuum equipment, masks, photoresist materials, wafer stages, control software and contamination-management systems.
The 2012 report does not say which part the startup developed. It may have targeted one component or subsystem rather than a complete scanner, but that is an inference, not an established fact. A component breakthrough can make a company strategically important without making it an ASML replacement.

Why $5 million mattered—and why it was not enough for a scanner
Five million dollars could support an early-stage engineering program: laboratory work, specialized staff, patents, prototype hardware, testing or customer demonstrations. It could not credibly fund the full commercialization of a production EUV machine.
| Reference point | What the figure represents |
|---|---|
| $5 million in the 2012 headline | A reported fundraising target for an unnamed startup; completion was not verified. |
| $5 million per EUV LLC share | Historical consortium membership pricing, not proof of a startup funding round. |
| About $250 million through 2000 | Projected investment for the broader EUV LLC development effort. |
| $40 million for xLight | Reuters-reported financing for a focused EUV laser-source program, with an operational prototype targeted for 2028. |
| About $200 million to more than $400 million | Approximate prices for current-generation EUV systems, depending on generation, according to TechCrunch. |
ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet has emphasized that making an EUV image is only the starting point. A fab-ready system must produce wafers at high throughput, low cost and nanometer-level accuracy while operating reliably.

How the historical EUV effort became an industrial system
EUV development was never a normal venture-funded hardware project. A historical case study of the EUV LLC consortium describes its founding in 1997 by Intel, Motorola and AMD, cooperation with national laboratories and equipment suppliers, and a projected investment of roughly $250 million through 2000.

The same study records that ASML participated in early concept reviews and eventually signed a delayed licensing agreement with EUV LLC in February 1999. The consortium’s $5 million membership-share figure is separate from the 2012 startup headline and does not identify that startup.
ASML later consolidated critical light-source expertise through its acquisition of Cymer, reported at approximately $2.5 billion. The broader history shows why EUV required chipmakers, government laboratories, optics specialists and equipment companies working over decades.

xLight demonstrates how a present-day startup can target a bottleneck without trying to replace ASML’s entire scanner business. Reuters reported that the company raised $40 million to develop a new EUV laser source and expected an operational prototype in 2028.

ASML remains the only supplier described as providing production EUV machines in the modern market. xLight’s proposed product would be a source that could potentially be considered for integration into such systems, not a complete competing scanner. Reuters reported no formal ASML–xLight partnership, while noting that ASML technical personnel had provided requirements for a laser that might qualify.
Fouquet told TechCrunch that the source still had to be built and proven. The commercial test would be whether it delivered a meaningful performance or cost advantage.
Why an EUV startup can fail even with promising technology
These are industry-level risks, not confirmed explanations for the unnamed company’s outcome:
- capital requirements exceeding the initial round;
- failure to achieve sufficient source power, stability or lifetime;
- inadequate wafer throughput;
- higher cost than incumbent solutions;
- difficulty integrating with ASML’s architecture;
- dependence on specialized optics, vacuum systems, materials or national laboratories;
- patent, licensing or export-control constraints;
- inability to demonstrate reliability in a fabrication plant;
- long customer-qualification cycles.
In semiconductor equipment, a laboratory demonstration does not equal a qualified product. Customers need repeatable performance, serviceability, yield and economics at manufacturing scale.

The topic is genuine, but the evidence supports a narrower conclusion than many retellings imply. A July 2012 report described an unnamed EUV startup seeking $5 million and talking with ASML. It does not establish the company’s name, the precise subject of the discussions, whether financing closed, or whether ASML formally backed the venture.
The episode is best understood as an example of the capital and integration barriers around EUV. A small round could fund a component prototype or technical demonstration; challenging ASML’s complete system business requires decades of research, industrial partners and enormous investment.
