1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere were three separate security incidents—not one confirmed breach affecting all three companies. SoundCloud said an unauthorized actor accessed limited data; Crunchbase confirmed that documents were taken from its corporate network; and Betterment said social engineering led to access through third-party platforms. ShinyHunters claimed responsibility in reporting, but the available company statements do not independently confirm the group carried out all three incidents.
What information did ShinyHunters steal?
The answer differs by company, and “steal” should be read with care: the companies confirmed different parts of the incidents, while reporting linked the events to ShinyHunters. The available evidence does not establish one shared haul or a verified combined count.
| Company | Company-confirmed incident | Information reported or confirmed | Scale established |
|---|---|---|---|
| SoundCloud | SoundCloud said an unauthorized actor accessed limited data through an ancillary service dashboard. | Email addresses and information already visible on public profiles, according to SoundCloud’s statement as reported by BleepingComputer. | BleepingComputer estimated roughly 28 million accounts, based on its report that about 20% of users were affected. SoundCloud did not confirm an exact count. |
| Crunchbase | Crunchbase confirmed a threat actor exfiltrated certain documents from its corporate network. | The company statement did not specify the documents’ contents or provide a confirmed inventory of exposed records. | No exact record or document count was stated in the consulted company statement. |
| Betterment | Betterment said social engineering on January 9, 2026 enabled access to certain systems through third-party platforms used for marketing and operations. | Contact information was the principal privacy impact. For a subset of customers, it was accompanied by addresses, phone numbers, or birthdates. | Betterment did not give a customer count in its February 3 forensic update. |
SoundCloud’s statement, quoted by BleepingComputer, said: “We understand that a purported threat actor group accessed certain limited data that we hold.” The company described the affected information as email addresses and data already shown on public profiles. It said passwords and financial data were not accessed. BleepingComputer’s December 15, 2025 report estimated about 28 million accounts by applying its reported 20% share to public user figures; that is a media estimate, not a company-confirmed count.
Crunchbase’s spokesperson told BleepingComputer: “Crunchbase detected a cybersecurity incident where a threat actor exfiltrated certain documents from our corporate network.” Crunchbase said the incident was contained and systems were secure, but its statement did not identify how many documents or records were taken or provide a confirmed inventory of their contents. BleepingComputer’s January 23, 2026 report also described ShinyHunters’ leak-site listing and the group’s claims about voice-phishing activity; those claims do not fill in Crunchbase’s undisclosed inventory.

Betterment described an intrusion through third-party marketing and operations platforms, followed by a fraudulent crypto-related message sent to some customers. The message was not a legitimate Betterment investment offer. In its incident updates, Betterment said the unauthorized access began January 9, 2026, and its February 3 forensic findings identified contact information as the main privacy impact.
Was my SoundCloud account affected?
SoundCloud did not publish an exact confirmed account count or, in the statement reported by BleepingComputer, a way for users to check individually. The reported estimate—roughly 28 million accounts, or about 20% of users—should not be treated as a definitive list of affected people.

SoundCloud said the accessed data consisted of email addresses and information already visible on public profiles, and that passwords and financial data were not accessed. If you receive a message claiming to be about this incident, do not treat a link or request in it as proof that the sender represents SoundCloud; use the company’s own current channels for account guidance.
Were passwords or financial details exposed?
For SoundCloud, the company said password and financial data were not accessed. For Betterment, the company’s forensic investigation found no customer accounts, passwords, or login information compromised. Those findings are company statements about their respective incidents; they should not be generalized to Crunchbase, whose public statement confirmed document exfiltration without specifying document contents.

Did Betterment customer accounts get hacked?
Betterment said unauthorized access reached certain systems through third-party platforms, but its forensic investigation found no customer accounts or login credentials compromised. The confirmed privacy concern was contact data: for some customers, contact information was accompanied by an address, phone number, or birthdate. The company did not state how many customers were affected.
Betterment’s January 12, 2026 update said: “On January 9, an unauthorized individual gained access to certain Betterment systems through social engineering.” The company said it revoked the access and investigated. It later reported that its findings did not show customer-account compromise.

How many Crunchbase records were leaked?
No exact number is established in the consulted company statement. Crunchbase confirmed that a threat actor exfiltrated “certain documents” from its corporate network, and said the incident was contained and systems secure. It did not disclose a count of documents or records or a confirmed list of their contents. ShinyHunters’ leak-site claims, as reported by BleepingComputer, are not an independently verified company count.

Not across all three incidents on the evidence cited here. BleepingComputer reported ShinyHunters’ claims and listings, while the company statements establish different incident facts. SoundCloud’s reported statement referred to a “purported threat actor group”; Crunchbase confirmed document exfiltration; Betterment described social engineering. These statements do not independently establish that ShinyHunters was responsible for each event.

Nor is there a substantiated aggregate total for all three companies. The SoundCloud figure is a reported estimate; Crunchbase and Betterment did not publish exact affected-record or customer counts in the cited statements. The measures are not interchangeable, so adding claimed listings and estimates would create a misleading total.
How the incidents differ
- SoundCloud: limited data accessed through an ancillary service dashboard, according to the company; exposed data described as email addresses and public-profile information.
- Crunchbase: company-confirmed exfiltration of unspecified documents from its corporate network; contents and count not stated.
- Betterment: social engineering via third-party platforms used for marketing and operations; a fraudulent crypto message was sent to some customers, while the forensic investigation found no customer-account or login compromise.
Betterment also reported intermittent website and app outages on January 13, 2026 due to a DDoS attack, with access restored at 2:40 p.m. ET. That availability disruption was a separate event from the January 9 unauthorized access and should not be treated as evidence of further account compromise.
Betterment said its post-incident report was available as of March 30, 2026, when it stated its update page would receive no further updates. For current account-specific advice, follow the relevant company’s official channels rather than relying on a leak-site claim or unsolicited message.
