The average U.S. wedding cost in 2025 was $34,000, while the median was $24,000, according to The Knot’s 2026 Real Weddings Study. Those are survey estimates of what couples reported spending—not a recommended budget or a quote for a particular wedding.

What the 2025 wedding-cost figures measure

The Knot’s 2026 Real Weddings Study surveyed 10,474 U.S. couples who married between January 1 and December 31, 2025. Respondents were recruited through The Knot and/or WeddingWire membership, so the findings are self-reported survey results from a recruited sample, not a census of all U.S. weddings. The Knot reports a $34,000 average and $24,000 median.

The mean and median answer different questions. The $34,000 average is the total reported spending divided across the sample; expensive weddings can pull it upward. The $24,000 median is the midpoint: half of respondents reported spending less and half more. The Knot’s data read-out says about 25% spent approximately $12,000 or less, while the middle 50% spent approximately $12,000 to $41,000.

Why another 2025 estimate is $36,000

Zola’s 2025 First Look Report projected an average cost of $36,000, based on budgets supplied by engaged couples before their weddings. The Knot’s figures instead come from couples reporting what they spent after marrying in 2025. The different amounts reflect different sources, methods, and planning stages; they are not competing measurements of the same thing. For actual reported spending, The Knot’s retrospective study is the closer match to the question.

How to use the national average for your own budget

The national average is a reference point, not a target. Your guest count, location, and priorities affect what a realistic budget looks like, so compare both the total and the cost per guest rather than relying on one national figure.

The Knot Worldwide reports an average spend of $292 per guest for 2025, up $8 from 2024. This is another survey benchmark, not a fixed price per attendee or a reliable estimate for every location and event. The Knot’s Budget Advisor offers local average-cost information, pricing factors, savings tips, and vendor connections. Treat a calculator estimate as a starting point, then check it against current quotes from vendors in your area.

  • Ideal for Gifting
  • Ideal for a bookworm
  • Compact for travelling
  • Start with your constraints: Set the maximum total you can afford before assigning amounts to individual categories.
  • Model guest count and location: Compare a smaller guest list or different venue options against the effect on both total and per-guest spending.
  • Allocate by priority: Decide which parts of the event matter most to you, then make trade-offs elsewhere to stay within your limit.
  • Track planned and actual costs: A spreadsheet or paper wedding budget planner can help you record allocations, quotes, and final expenses. It is a tracking aid, not evidence of what a wedding should cost.
