Fetchr was a Dubai-founded delivery startup whose central idea was to use a recipient’s smartphone GPS location in place of a conventional street address. Founded in 2012 by Idriss Al Rifai and Joy Ajlouni, it focused mainly on e-commerce deliveries across the Middle East. Reports in 2021 described severe financial distress and possible liquidation, but do not establish a definitive closure date.
What was Fetchr?
Fetchr was a last-mile logistics company built around a practical delivery problem: in some places and situations across the Middle East, a conventional street address could be missing, unreliable, or hard for a courier to use. Fetchr’s proposed alternative was a phone-to-phone delivery system: a customer’s smartphone GPS location could serve as the address.
The service was aimed chiefly at retailers and e-commerce businesses that needed parcels delivered to customers. It also offered an individual pickup option: The National reported in 2017 that a person could photograph an item, select a collection time within a 30-minute window, and request pickup. The founders’ e-commerce backgrounds informed the emphasis on completing retail deliveries and handling returns.
How did Fetchr use GPS instead of an address?
Rather than rely entirely on a named street and building number, Fetchr used a customer’s mobile phone to provide location information for a courier. That made a smartphone location the practical delivery reference. The approach was designed for contexts where traditional addressing did not reliably get a driver to the recipient.

GPS addressed one part of the last-mile problem, not the whole logistics operation. Fetchr still needed systems for merchants, customers, couriers, collections, and deliveries. Founder and CEO Idriss Al Rifai told Computer Weekly in 2019 that the company built its platform in-house because of regional trading-hour peculiarities and the need to put GPS at the center of the process: “There were so many peculiarities in our trading hours and how we include GPS at the core of the process that we had to build it ourselves.”
Who founded Fetchr in Dubai, and when did it launch?
Idriss Al Rifai and Joy Ajlouni founded Fetchr in Dubai in 2012. The National reported that the company launched in the UAE in June 2013, after the founders initially supported it with savings and money from family and friends. The distinction matters: 2012 is the reported founding year, while June 2013 is the reported UAE launch.

What did Fetchr build, and how large did it become?
Fetchr developed its own enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, along with apps for customers and e-commerce clients. Computer Weekly reported that its platform ran on Amazon Web Services after an early move away from Microsoft Azure. Al Rifai said the company’s product development was intended to support expansion, remarking in 2019: “Scale comes naturally as the next step on the products you build.”
The reported scale figures describe different snapshots, not a single current footprint:
Rank #3
| Reported measure | Figure and date | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Countries of operation and workforce | Operations in six countries; about 2,000 staff, including 70 technology employees, in 2017 | The National, 2017 |
| Service footprint | 500 cities across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Egypt, and Jordan, reported in 2019 | Computer Weekly, 2019 |
| Engineering team | 80–100 engineers working on the app at one time, reported in 2019 | Computer Weekly, 2019 |
| Order mix | About 98% of orders came from regional online-retail websites, according to Al Rifai in 2019 | Computer Weekly, 2019 |
The staffing figures are not directly interchangeable: The National’s 2017 snapshot counted 70 technology employees, while Computer Weekly later described 80–100 engineers working on the app at one time. The reports do not say those groups were measured on the same basis.
How much funding did Fetchr raise?
Fetchr’s expansion was backed by venture funding. The reported amounts below refer to different measures: a single financing round and a cumulative total.
Rank #4
| Funding figure | What it refers to | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| $41 million | Series B financing | Gulf News, 2017 |
| $52 million | Total raised across four rounds by that point | Computer Weekly, 2019 |
The National identified New Enterprise Associates as lead investor in a major round and listed Majid Al Futtaim, Nokia Growth Partners, Raed Ventures, Iliad Partners, Beco Capital, YBA Kanoo, Venture Souq, and Swicorp among investors in the 2017 financing. These figures document fundraising, not profitability or the company’s eventual financial condition.

The latest strongly sourced status in the reporting covered here is a warning of severe financial distress in 2021. Bloomberg reported on 6 October 2021 that Fetchr had become insolvent and was considering liquidation after a disputed Saudi tax bill. Wamda described the investor warning as involving a disputed $100 million VAT and zakat bill, and reported that Fetchr had nearly collapsed in late 2019 before emergency funding and a Saudi-focused turnaround plan.

Those reports establish that the company faced insolvency and possible liquidation in 2021; they do not establish an exact shutdown date. Nor do they prove that every later business or entity using the Fetchr name ceased operating. On the available dated reporting, it is more accurate to say Fetchr was in serious distress and considering liquidation in 2021 than to claim a confirmed closure date or assert its present operating status.
