Warren Buffett’s comparison was a warning about the consequences of powerful technology and how difficult it can be to regain control once it exists—not a claim that AI and nuclear weapons are equivalent. At Berkshire Hathaway’s 2023 and 2024 annual meetings, he said AI was partly “out of the bottle,” while acknowledging that he knew little about the technology and could not predict whether its effects would ultimately be more beneficial or harmful.

What Buffett said about AI and the atomic bomb

At Berkshire Hathaway’s 2023 annual meeting, a shareholder asked Buffett how technological advances, especially generative AI, might affect traditional industries. Buffett said he did not know much about AI, but he did not dismiss its importance. He recalled the genie metaphor he had used about nuclear weapons and described AI as somewhat similar: a powerful technology whose consequences may be difficult to contain or foresee once it has been created. The CNBC transcript of the 2023 meeting records the question and the analogy.

He returned to the comparison at the 2024 meeting, saying: “And AI is somewhat similar. It’s out it’s part-way out of the bottle.” In that discussion, he said he could not judge whether AI would ultimately do wonderful things or cause harm. The CNBC transcript of the 2024 meeting captures the remarks.

What the comparison means—and what it does not

Buffett’s point was about scale of consequences and control. The atomic bomb serves as an image of a technology whose creation cannot simply be undone; his “genie out of the bottle” language suggests that AI’s development may likewise be hard to reverse. The analogy does not establish that AI works like a bomb, is itself a weapon, or produces the same immediate effects. Nor did Buffett offer a technical forecast about AI’s capabilities.

He was candid about the limits of his own expertise. The Associated Press quoted him at the 2024 meeting: “As someone who doesn’t understand a damn thing about it, it has enormous potential for good and enormous potential for harm and I just don’t know how that plays out.” His uncertainty was part of the warning: potentially large benefits and harms can coexist, and he did not claim to know which would prevail.

Why Buffett raised scams and deepfakes

In 2024, the concern was not only abstract or long-term. Buffett said he had seen a fake video of himself that looked and sounded like him, and imagined being fooled into sending money overseas. The Associated Press reported his warning that AI-assisted scams could become “the growth industry of all time.” This example connects the broader question of control to a practical personal-finance risk: convincing impersonation can be used to pressure someone into transferring money.

A familiar face or voice in a video or call is not, by itself, proof that a request is genuine. Treat unexpected requests to send money—especially overseas—as something to verify independently through a known contact method before acting. This is a practical implication of Buffett’s example, not a claim that he laid out a specific fraud-prevention checklist.

How his remarks changed from 2023 to 2024

Meeting Emphasis
2023 Broad uncertainty about a powerful technology’s consequences, raised in response to a question about AI and traditional industries. CNBC transcript.
2024 The genie metaphor returned, alongside explicit uncertainty about benefits and harms and a concrete example of deepfake-enabled fraud. CNBC transcript; Associated Press report.

Together, the two appearances show a consistent caution rather than a prediction that AI will end badly: Buffett used nuclear history to express concern about powerful technologies escaping easy control, while leaving their ultimate effects unresolved.
