To compare scrub fabric, look beyond the fiber-content label. Airflow depends on fabric construction and finishing as well as fiber; stretch and recovery are different properties; and durability can mean resistance to abrasion, pilling, tearing, or seam failure. No established universal blend or performance threshold makes one fabric best for every wearer or shift.
What fabric is best for scrubs?
There is no single best scrub fabric supported by a universal ranking. The better choice depends on how the garment feels during your work, the kinds of wear it faces, and whether its care instructions fit your laundering routine. A fiber blend can be a starting point, but it does not establish how breathable, stretchy, or long-lasting a finished garment will be.
When comparing two garments, ask for product-specific fabric or garment specifications. Compare results only when the test methods and conditions are comparable; otherwise, a number from one product may not be meaningful against another.
How can you assess breathability?
Breathability is not determined by the fiber label alone. ASTM D737-18(2023), the Standard Test Method for Air Permeability of Textile Fabrics, measures how readily air passes through fabric. ASTM describes air permeability as an important factor in clothing and notes that construction and finishing can appreciably affect airflow. The standard does not set a universal “good” air-permeability threshold for scrubs.
#1 Best Overall
If a manufacturer reports an air-permeability result, check the method and test conditions before using it to compare garments. A result is most useful when both fabrics were tested on a comparable basis. A cotton or polyester label by itself cannot tell you how air permeable the garment is.
Are cotton or polyester scrubs more breathable?
The fiber name alone does not establish which finished scrub garment will feel more breathable. Fabric construction and finishing can change airflow, so a meaningful comparison requires garment-specific information, such as air-permeability results obtained under comparable conditions. Without that evidence, claims based only on fiber content cannot settle the comparison.

What does stretch recovery mean in scrub fabric?
Stretch describes how fabric extends; recovery describes whether it returns toward its original shape after being stretched. Both matter: fabric may allow movement yet not recover as desired after repeated movement and wear. ASTM’s textile standards catalogue includes D6614/D6614M-20, a method for textile-fabric stretch properties, and Intertek lists stretch and recovery among examples of textile durability evaluations.
A stretch percentage on a product description does not, by itself, establish comfort in your tasks or how well the fabric recovers. Look for information about both movement and recovery rather than treating “stretch” as a complete performance measure. The cited sources do not provide recommended scrub-specific values.

How do you tell whether scrubs will last?
Durability has several dimensions, and one test cannot represent every kind of wear. Match the evidence to the failure you want to assess:
- Abrasion resistance: relates to surface wear from rubbing.
- Pilling resistance: addresses small fiber or fabric balls forming on the surface.
- Tensile or breaking strength: concerns how fabric withstands pulling forces.
- Tear resistance: concerns resistance to a tear continuing through fabric.
- Seam strength: concerns the strength of the garment’s joined construction, not just the fabric itself.
ASTM’s textile standards catalogue lists methods for abrasion and pilling. Intertek’s medical-textiles overview describes testing categories that include these types of durability evaluations. If a garment’s likely use makes a particular failure mode important, seek a relevant specification rather than relying on a broad “durable” claim.

ASTM F2407/F2407M-22 concerns surgical gowns, not ordinary scrub uniforms. Its physical-property provisions illustrate kinds of properties that can be measured, but they are not a scrub certification or a performance standard for everyday scrubs. Its optional reporting of some properties, including durability-related ones, also does not establish a general scrub requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should role and care affect your choice?
Choose with your actual duties and laundering routine in mind. Consider whether the garment allows the movement your tasks require, which wear modes are most relevant, and whether you can follow the care directions consistently. The available sources do not rank blends by laundering outcomes or establish a scrub lifespan, so do not infer years of use from a fiber blend or general durability language.

Also distinguish ordinary scrubs from apparel intended for a specific protective purpose. CDC/NIOSH guidance addresses selection of protective clothing and standards; an ordinary scrub description or fabric blend does not establish PPE status or barrier protection. If your role requires protection against a particular hazard, rely on the applicable workplace requirements and the garment’s relevant documentation rather than assuming scrubs provide it.
Quick Recap
A practical comparison checklist
- Airflow: Is air permeability reported, and were the test method and conditions provided?
- Movement: Does the garment offer the needed stretch, and is recovery addressed separately?
- Wear: Are abrasion, pilling, fabric strength, tear resistance, or seam strength details available for the way you expect to use it?
- Care: Do the garment’s care instructions fit your real laundering routine?
- Protection: Is it ordinary workwear, or apparel documented for a specific protective role?
