Check your plan’s notice and current Evidence of Coverage, then call the plan to confirm the amount and the effective date. If the plan denied coverage or payment, or refused to change what you owe, you may be able to appeal. If the change simply makes the plan unaffordable, compare coverage during an enrollment period you qualify for and ask your state about Medicare cost assistance.
Identify what went up—and when
Medicare Advantage costs are plan-specific and can change each year. There is no single national Medicare Advantage premium or typical increase amount. Start with the written notice and the plan’s current Evidence of Coverage or other plan materials; Medicare explains that plan cost amounts can change each year at Medicare.gov’s Medicare costs page.
Separate the plan’s own monthly premium from your Part B premium and from charges for care or prescriptions. Look for whether the change is to a premium, deductible, copayment, coinsurance, or the amount charged for a particular service or drug. Call the number on your plan card or notice if anything is unclear, and ask the plan to identify the document and provision that set the new amount.
For context, the standard Part B premium is $202.90 per month in 2026, according to Medicare.gov. Your Part B premium is separate from any premium charged by your Medicare Advantage plan, and the Part B amount may be higher depending on income.

Can you appeal the higher amount?
An appeal is for a plan decision, not simply for a cost that strains your budget. Medicare says you may appeal if a plan refuses to cover or pay for care, or refuses to change the amount you must pay. For a coverage or payment dispute, ask the plan for an organization determination. If the decision is unfavorable, use the written notice’s appeal steps and deadline; the applicable instructions and timing depend on the decision. See Medicare’s guidance on appealing a decision in a Medicare health plan.
If the plan applied its stated premium or cost-sharing terms correctly and you cannot afford them, an appeal may not resolve the underlying affordability problem. Compare other coverage options when you are eligible to make a change, and check whether you qualify for state-run assistance.

When can you change Medicare Advantage plans?
As of October 3, 2026, these are the upcoming standard opportunities described by Medicare. Your exact options can depend on your circumstances.
| Enrollment period | Who can use it and what they can do | Timing of change |
|---|---|---|
| Open Enrollment: October 15–December 7, 2026 | People with Medicare can join, drop, or switch Medicare Advantage plans, or switch between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare. | A request received by December 7 takes effect January 1, 2027. Details: Medicare’s plan enrollment guidance. |
| Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment: January 1–March 31, 2027 | Someone already enrolled in Medicare Advantage can switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare. | The change generally takes effect the first of the month after the plan receives the request. Details: Medicare’s plan enrollment guidance. |
| Special Enrollment Period | Certain events, including some moves or loss of other coverage, may permit a change outside the usual periods. Available changes and timing depend on the event. | Check the event-specific rules at Medicare’s plan enrollment guidance or contact Medicare. |
If you are considering a return to Original Medicare, check whether you need a separate Part D prescription drug plan and review your Medigap enrollment rights and availability before deciding. Access to Medigap coverage has limits; Medicare’s enrollment guidance flags this issue.

How to compare plans without focusing only on the premium
A lower monthly premium does not by itself mean lower costs for the year. Compare coverage against your expected care, prescriptions, providers, and ability to manage an unexpected expense. Medicare Advantage plans vary in cost sharing, benefits, and provider and drug coverage.
- Costs: Compare the monthly premium, deductible, copayments or coinsurance, and the plan’s annual out-of-pocket limit for covered services.
- Care access: Check whether your doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies are in network.
- Prescriptions: Review the drug formulary and any coverage restrictions for the medicines you take.
- Fit for your needs: Consider benefits relevant to your care and the costs you could face if your needs change.
Verify providers and medicines against current plan materials and Medicare’s plan comparison resources. Before leaving your current plan, confirm the replacement plan’s effective date so you do not create a gap in coverage.

Check whether public assistance can help
Medicare Savings Programs may help eligible people pay Part A or Part B premiums and some other Medicare costs. Apply through your state. Medicare’s federal 2026 limits are a starting point, not a guarantee of eligibility in every state: states may use higher limits or disregard some income or resources. Review Medicare’s Medicare Savings Programs information and contact your state Medicaid or Medicare Savings Program office about its rules.
Your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) provides free, personalized Medicare counseling. A counselor can help you understand a notice, compare plan options, and identify questions to take to your state office. Find help through SHIP.
