First, confirm the recall against your R2’s 17-character VIN. The official sources available as of October 3, 2026 establish how to check a U.S. vehicle recall, but do not establish that a Rivian R2 battery-pack recall exists or identify affected vehicles, risks, or a remedy. If you received a notice, follow its vehicle-specific instructions and contact Rivian or the service provider it names.
Is there an R2 battery-pack recall?
The available official information does not confirm an R2 battery-pack recall. NHTSA’s recall page explains the general U.S. process, while Rivian’s R2 page identifies the vehicle; neither source establishes an R2 battery-pack campaign, affected VINs, a defect, interim safety directions, or a repair. See NHTSA’s recall guidance and Rivian’s R2 page.
That does not determine whether your individual vehicle is affected by a newly announced campaign. Check your VIN and any direct communication from Rivian rather than relying on a model-wide headline or an assumption that a battery recall has been confirmed.
How to check whether your specific R2 is affected
- Find the VIN. Use the vehicle’s 17-character vehicle identification number, which is also shown on its registration.
- Search NHTSA by VIN. Enter it in the NHTSA recall lookup. A VIN search checks for unrepaired recalls reported for that specific vehicle. A make-and-model search gives general recall information and does not establish that your particular R2 is affected.
- Compare the result with any notice you received. Read Rivian’s communication for the vehicle-specific campaign details and instructions. NHTSA’s general lookup does not supply R2 battery-pack details that are not in its official record.
If you receive a recall notice
Follow the notice’s interim safety guidance
NHTSA advises owners to follow interim safety guidance from the manufacturer. Apply only the directions in the notice or other official campaign communication for your vehicle. Do not assume you must stop driving, avoid charging, or park in a particular place unless Rivian’s applicable instructions say so.

Arrange the stated remedy
Contact Rivian or the service provider named in the notice to learn how to schedule the repair. NHTSA says recall remedies are provided free of charge, but the available information does not establish what remedy, appointment process, or timing would apply to an R2 battery-pack campaign. Do not assume the remedy would be battery replacement: manufacturers may repair or replace a part, refund the purchase price, or, rarely, repurchase the vehicle.
Do not attempt to inspect, disconnect, repair, or replace a high-voltage battery pack yourself. Use the instructions and service arrangements provided for the specific campaign.

If the lookup says there is no unrepaired recall
A clean result is useful, but it is not conclusive in every circumstance. NHTSA notes that a recently announced recall may not yet have all affected VINs identified and added; VINs are added continuously. If Rivian contacted you, or you have credible information about a newly announced campaign, follow up with Rivian and check the NHTSA lookup again rather than treating the initial result as definitive.
