If Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) changes your flight, save the original booking and every notice, then ask the operating airline or your booking agent—in writing—for your confirmed options: another PIA flight, rerouting, or an involuntary refund where applicable. The remedy depends on what happened, your itinerary and the applicable rules; a disruption does not automatically entitle every passenger to cash compensation.
First, identify exactly what changed
Check your flight number, travel date, departure and arrival airports, and whether PIA has delayed, canceled, rerouted or changed the scheduled time or airport. Keep the original itinerary alongside each revised version, plus emails, text messages and screenshots of status updates. Note the actual departure and arrival times if you travel.
Contact PIA using the details on your ticket or its official channels. If a travel agent issued your ticket, contact the agent as well. Ask for the reason for the change, the new confirmed itinerary, and the choices available under the rules that apply to your trip. PIA says schedules may change and are not guaranteed, and asks passengers to provide contact information so it or its agent can try to notify them. A schedule change is not, by itself, proof that cash compensation is due.
What choices does PIA publish for disruptions?
PIA’s Conditions of Carriage, Article 9.2.2, sets out remedies for specified cases: cancellation, failure to operate reasonably according to schedule, failure to stop at the destination or a stopover, or a missed connection meeting the clause’s conditions. It lists these options:

- Travel as soon as possible on another PIA flight with space.
- Rerouting within a reasonable period on PIA, another airline, or another mutually agreed form of transport.
- An involuntary refund under the referenced refund terms.
These are remedies for the situations described in the terms, not a guarantee that every choice applies to every booking. Ask PIA to identify which options apply to your disruption and whether accepting one affects onward connections or other ticketed segments. Read the PIA Conditions of Carriage.
If PIA cancels the flight
PIA’s Air Passenger Rights page says that when a flight is canceled, the operating airline must offer the passenger a choice of alternative transport or rerouting to the final destination, or a full refund of the unutilized ticket. The page attributes this to Article D13 of ANO-001-ATCP-2.0. Treat it as PIA’s published statement and confirm how it applies to your route and circumstances. Ask for the available choices in writing before agreeing to a voluntary change.

If the flight is delayed or does not operate reasonably to schedule
PIA’s Conditions of Carriage includes failure to operate reasonably according to schedule among the disruption situations for which Article 9.2.2 lists remedies. For certain international delays, PIA’s Air Passenger Rights page also describes assistance and a refund option:
- For delays greater than two to four hours, depending on flight distance, PIA says refreshments or meals and communication facilities should be provided.
- When necessary, PIA says overnight accommodation should be offered.
- After a delay exceeding five hours, PIA says a passenger who chooses to discontinue the journey may receive a refund of the unused ticket.
These are PIA’s published provisions; confirm whether they apply to your particular flight and ask the airline how it is applying them. The thresholds are not one universal delay period: the assistance band varies with distance.

If PIA changes the departure time or airport
PIA’s Conditions of Carriage addresses a changed departure time or airport. If the change is unacceptable and PIA cannot reserve an acceptable alternative in the ticketed class, the terms provide for an involuntary refund under the referenced refund article. Ask what alternative PIA can confirm and, if you do not accept the change, whether your ticket qualifies for an involuntary refund. Ordinary fare-rule refunds and involuntary refunds arising from a covered disruption are not necessarily the same.
How to decide between rerouting and a refund
Choose based on whether you still need to complete the trip and what PIA can confirm—not just on the first option offered verbally.

- If you need to travel: Request the earliest acceptable confirmed itinerary. Check every segment, connection airport, date, class and baggage arrangement. Get written confirmation before leaving the airport or buying a separate ticket.
- If you want to stop traveling: Ask in writing whether an involuntary refund is available before accepting a voluntary change. Specify which ticket segments and paid services remain unused, and ask how the refund will be handled.
- If you are considering separate transport: Ask PIA whether it will authorize or arrange it before paying. Keep receipts, but do not assume an independent purchase will be reimbursed.
Keep records for expenses or a compensation claim
Save your ticket, booking reference, disruption notices, revised itineraries, actual travel times, written conversations and receipts for expenses related to the delay. Record why each expense was necessary. These records help explain a request; keeping them does not itself guarantee reimbursement.
Expense damages caused by international delay and fixed compensation for inconvenience are different kinds of claims. The applicable rules may depend on the route, cause and circumstances. PIA’s terms describe remedies and liability limits; the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA), for example, describes written claims for certain international delay damages such as expenses. Do not assume that one type of claim guarantees another or that both can be recovered for the same loss.

Check the law for your itinerary before quoting compensation
There is no single compensation amount that applies to every PIA disruption. For eligible flights to, from and within Canada, CTA guidance says inconvenience compensation may apply when the disruption is within the airline’s control and not required for safety, notice was 14 days or less, arrival was at least three hours late, and the passenger files a written claim within one year. Other eligibility conditions may matter.

These amounts are under Canadian rules, not universal PIA payouts; carrier size and eligibility determine which amount, if any, applies. Under the Canadian Air Passenger Protection Regulations, the airline has 30 days to pay or explain why compensation is not payable after a written request. The CTA’s guidance and the Canadian Air Passenger Protection Regulations set out the Canadian rules. For another route or jurisdiction, check the relevant aviation regulator’s current rules and claim deadlines.
How to make a clear complaint or claim
- Contact the operating airline and, if relevant, the ticketing agent. Give your booking reference, flight number and travel date.
- State the specific outcome you are requesting: confirmed rerouting, an involuntary refund, assistance, reimbursement of documented expenses, or a compensation decision under the law applicable to your itinerary.
- Attach the ticket, original and revised itineraries, notices, a short timeline and relevant receipts. Keep copies of what you submit.
- If the response does not address your request, escalate through PIA’s official complaint channel with the same complete record. For a jurisdiction-specific claim, follow that regulator’s filing process and deadline.
Do not rely on a particular response time or contact number unless PIA provides it for your booking; the cited published material does not establish a universal processing time or current customer-service number.
