First, check the certificate’s exact name, point cap, and expiration date in your IHG One Rewards account. Some eligible U.S. card anniversary certificates can be topped up with points, but that option does not apply automatically to every IHG free night. If yours cannot cover the hotel and dates you want, compare other dates or properties, then contact IHG Customer Care if the certificate will not appear or work in the booking flow.
1. Confirm which certificate you have
“IHG free night certificate” can refer to benefits with different rules. Open your IHG One Rewards account and inspect the certificate’s displayed name, issuing card or promotion, point cap, issue date, expiration date, and any restrictions. Do not assume a rule for one certificate type applies to another.
For example, IHG’s U.S. Customer Care FAQ describes a 40,000-point Anniversary Free Night and identifies a top-off option for certain U.S. Chase cardmembers. Separately, IHG’s UK Goodwill Free Night promotion has its own point ceiling and booking and stay windows, and says the reward cannot be extended past its expiration. 2. Check whether your certificate can be topped up
IHG’s current U.S. FAQ says eligible U.S. Chase IHG One Rewards Premier, Traveler, and Business Premier cardmembers may add points from their IHG account to use an Anniversary Free Night at a hotel priced above 40,000 points. Eligibility is specific to those cardmembers and that certificate type; do not assume another card, promotion, or goodwill certificate has the same feature. IHG Customer Care FAQ

Even when you are eligible, the hotel and dates matter. IHG says the hotels where a member can use the certificate may depend on desired booking dates because Reward Night prices vary. Search the actual dates and look for the certificate and add-points option in the booking flow rather than relying on a hotel’s usual points price.
3. Compare dates and nearby properties
IHG says Reward Night point amounts vary by hotel and can fluctuate daily. Its terms say there are no blackout dates for Reward Nights, but inventory is limited and subject to prior sale. That means a date is not formally blacked out, but it does not guarantee that a qualifying room will be available. - Compare the displayed point price and certificate availability for each date-property combination.
- Before confirming, open the room’s rate details and read its cancellation policy.
4. Decide whether another booking route makes sense
Use points for a separate Reward Night
If the certificate cannot be used for your trip, you may be able to book a separate Reward Night with points, subject to availability and the hotel’s terms. IHG says a standard Reward Night covers one night in a standard room. Resort or service charges, extra-person charges, incidentals, and other local charges may still apply in some circumstances. Consider Points & Cash only as a separate points booking
Points & Cash purchases points during a Reward Night booking; it does not raise a certificate’s cap or change its terms. IHG says the cash paid for purchased points is nonrefundable. If the hotel’s policy permits cancellation, the purchased points are redeposited. Check the specific cancellation policy and the total out-of-pocket cost before choosing this route. 5. Protect yourself before confirming a reservation
IHG requires Reward Nights to be booked through its website, app, or Customer Care, and a card guarantee is required. The hotel’s cancellation deadline applies; a late cancellation or no-show can incur a fee. IHG’s terms also describe a specific Six Senses consequence: a late cancellation or no-show may void the Free Night certificate. Review the reservation’s own terms before booking. IHG’s terms require advance booking for a Reward Night. Confirm that the intended certificate is applied in the booking flow and review the final rate and cancellation policy before committing; do not assume you can fix a certificate mismatch after making the reservation. 6. Contact IHG if the certificate is missing or the flow does not match
If the certificate does not appear, the add-points option is absent despite apparent eligibility, or the booking screen conflicts with what your account shows, contact IHG Customer Care through an official IHG channel. Have these details ready so the issue can be checked against your account and the specific booking:
- Certificate name, issuing card or promotion, and expiration date
- Hotel and requested stay dates
- Displayed Reward Night point price
- What the booking flow shows or prevents you from doing
Published terms cannot establish how an individual account or a particular room’s inventory will behave, so Customer Care is the appropriate place to resolve an account-specific mismatch. IHG Customer Care FAQ
