Those situations have different remedies—and a restriction on buying or selling does not necessarily mean every balance is inaccessible. Secure your email and Coinbase account, use only Coinbase’s official recovery and support routes, and never pay anyone who promises to unlock your funds.
First identify what “blocked” means
Write down the exact error message and which action fails. A generic login or trading error can also be caused by a service outage, so check Coinbase’s status page before treating it as an account-specific block. If the service is operating normally, match your symptom to the relevant route below.
- You cannot sign in: This may be a password, email-access, or two-step verification (2FA) problem. Use account recovery rather than assuming your funds are frozen.
- You see “account temporarily disabled”: Coinbase treats this as a security-related restriction that requires review. Follow the security steps below.
- You can sign in but cannot buy, sell, deposit, send, or withdraw: Check which specific action, asset, network, or payment method is affected. A restriction on one function does not automatically block the others.
- Identity verification loops or fails: Improve the document or selfie submission and use the official verification flow. Repeated submissions that do not fix the underlying mismatch may not help.
- Coinbase says it is closing your account: Follow the closure notice and determine which withdrawal or transfer options remain available.
- Coinbase says funds are frozen under legal or sanctions requirements: That is different from a temporary login or trading restriction; preserve the notice and follow the instructions in it.
Coinbase describes a true funds freeze as rare and generally connected to a court or government-authority order or legal sanctions requirements. Its explanations of restrictions, closures, and freezes are at Coinbase’s account-freeze guidance.
If you suspect someone accessed your account, secure it first
If you see an unfamiliar login, password or email change, or transaction, prioritize containment before trying to move funds. In particular, do not send cryptocurrency out of an account that may still be compromised.

- Use the official Coinbase app or type Coinbase’s address yourself. Lock the account if unauthorized access is ongoing, using the route on Coinbase’s fraud and suspicious-activity page.
- Change your Coinbase password. If your email may be compromised, change that password too, enable 2FA on the email account, and check recovery details and forwarding rules.
- Review Coinbase sessions, devices, and authorized applications. Revoke access you do not recognize. Coinbase recommends security keys or passkeys where available and advises reviewing active sessions: account-security guidance.
- If a SIM swap or phone-port attack is possible, contact your mobile carrier and secure the phone account.
- Save suspicious messages, screenshots, transaction IDs, wallet addresses, dates and times, and any Coinbase case number. Report unauthorized transactions through the official fraud page.
Resolve “account temporarily disabled”
Coinbase says this message requires a security review. Before opening a case, secure the email account and 2FA method and reset your Coinbase password. Then use Coinbase Support; look for Login Issue → Account temporarily disabled if those labels appear. Support options and menu labels can vary by issue and availability.
- Confirm the message is in the official Coinbase app or on the genuine Coinbase website. Do not follow a link or phone number sent by a stranger, social-media account, advertisement, or unsolicited message.
- Give Coinbase a concise, consistent timeline: the approximate date and time of your last successful login, your last authorized action, and any unfamiliar login, password or email change, device, or transaction.
- For suspected unauthorized transactions, include their timing, amounts, transaction IDs, and destination wallet addresses. Explain how your email, password, device, or 2FA codes might have been exposed, if you know.
- Reply to requests from Coinbase’s security team, keep the case number and correspondence, and avoid creating duplicate cases or giving contradictory accounts.
Coinbase says these reviews typically take up to 10 business days, but some take longer. That is an estimate for this security-review workflow, not a guaranteed deadline: Coinbase’s guidance for a temporarily disabled account.
Recover access if you lost your password, email, or 2FA
A lost sign-in method is an account-recovery problem, not necessarily a security block. Start with Coinbase’s sign-in troubleshooting for the issue you have. For lost email access or 2FA, use the official account-recovery flow.

- Enter your Coinbase email and password on the recovery page and choose an available recovery option.
- Complete any requested identity check, including identification or a selfie. If the original device has no usable camera, Coinbase’s guidance describes using a QR code to capture ID on a phone.
- After recovery, update your 2FA method and review account access.
For workflows that require ID verification, Coinbase says recovery can take up to 24 hours and sending may remain unavailable for another 24 hours after recovery. A separate Coinbase recovery FAQ describes a different, commonly 48-hour process: trading may return after 24 hours and full trading after 48 hours, while sending may remain disabled during the security period. These are workflow-specific estimates, not interchangeable guarantees or a promise that every restriction will clear on that schedule: Coinbase’s recovery FAQ.
Fix identity-verification problems
A rejected or looping verification does not by itself reveal why Coinbase restricted an account. Common issues to check include a mismatch between account details and identification, an expired or unsupported document, glare or poor lighting, cropped images, a selfie mismatch, or camera and browser permissions.
- Make sure your legal name and date of birth on Coinbase match your identification.
- Use clear, well-lit images showing the complete document, without glare or cropping.
- Try an updated Coinbase app or current browser; Coinbase specifically recommends an up-to-date Chrome browser for verification problems.
- If a desktop camera is failing, use a phone and follow the official prompt.
- If the flow loops or you cannot complete it, contact Coinbase through the official support portal rather than sending documents to an address or upload link supplied by an alleged support agent.

If only trading, deposits, or withdrawals are restricted
Check the restriction message and test only the actions that are safe and available. A block on buying or selling may leave other functions open; the result depends on the account’s status and the particular restriction. Coinbase says customers with buy-and-sell restrictions may still be able to send or receive crypto and cash out to a verified, linked bank account. Pending buys or cash deposits may need to complete before the resulting balance can be withdrawn.
Before assuming money is inaccessible, identify whether the restriction covers trading, fiat deposits, crypto transfers, cash withdrawals, a particular asset or network, or one payment method. Do not attempt a transfer if you suspect account compromise. If a transfer is available after you have secured the account, verify the destination address independently before confirming it.

A closure is not the same as a temporary review and may be final for Coinbase services. Coinbase says a customer whose account is closing may generally send remaining crypto to an external wallet and withdraw remaining cash to a verified, linked bank account before closure proceeds. Pending transactions, jurisdiction, and the account’s status can affect what is available and when; follow the specific closure instructions Coinbase provides.

Do not open a second account to get around a closure. Coinbase’s restriction guidance says customers subject to the relevant closure restriction cannot open a new account. Keep the closure notice and account records, and use the complaint process if a balance or access issue remains unresolved.

A legal or sanctions-related freeze may prevent access while Coinbase complies with an order or legal obligation. A support case, formal complaint, or new account cannot be assumed to override it. Preserve notices and correspondence; if you receive legal papers or believe an order has been applied in error, consult a qualified attorney. Coinbase’s freeze guidance explains the distinction between account restrictions and legal freezes.
Contact Coinbase without falling for fake support
Start at the official support portal. Coinbase says available support options may include chat, phone, email, or mail depending on the issue and availability; do not rely on a phone number found in a search ad, forum, or unsolicited message. Never pay an “unlock” service or share secrets with supposed support. Coinbase says its staff will not ask for your password, 2FA codes, email-account access, remote-access software, or money or crypto to resolve a restriction, and will not call you directly to troubleshoot the account. Treat any such request as a scam. Open Coinbase independently through a bookmark or typed address; do not click links in the suspicious message. You can forward a phishing email that impersonates Coinbase to [email protected]. See Coinbase’s security guidance.
When contacting support, provide the case number if you have one, exact error text, account email, relevant dates and times, device or app details if pertinent, and transaction IDs or wallet addresses for unauthorized activity. State the remedy you are requesting and attach relevant correspondence. Never include your password, reset code, 2FA code, or recovery phrase.
When to file a complaint or report a crime
Use a support ticket for access, verification, or security help. If the dispute remains unresolved, Coinbase’s U.S. User Agreement directs customers to contact support first and then use the Formal Complaint Process. Its U.S. User Agreement provides complaint details and a mailing option; follow the current form’s instructions and include your support case number and requested resolution.
If you suspect theft, impersonation, extortion, or unauthorized access, report it promptly to law enforcement. For internet crime in the United States, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center accepts reports. Depending on your state and the nature of the issue, a state regulator may also accept a money-transmission complaint. Neither a regulator nor a crime report can be assumed to unlock an account or override a court order or sanctions requirement. For a substantial balance or prolonged unresolved dispute, consider legal advice. Coinbase’s U.S. agreement also warns that cryptocurrency transfers may be irreversible; reporting a transaction does not guarantee recovery.
