What to Do if an XRP Transfer Is Delayed or Sent to the Wrong Address

Check the validated ledger result before acting on a delayed XRP transfer. Learn what to do if it failed, went to the wrong address, or reached an exchange without the right destination tag.

Start with the transaction hash (also called a transaction ID or TxID) and check it in an XRP Ledger explorer. Wait for a validated ledger result before treating a transfer as final: a validated tesSUCCESS means the XRP was sent to the recorded destination, while another validated result code means the transaction failed. If the address was right but an exchange deposit is missing, check the destination tag and contact that exchange’s official support.

Check the transaction before taking action

  1. Find the transaction hash. Look in the sending wallet’s transaction history or, if you withdrew through an exchange, its withdrawal history.
  2. Compare the transaction details. Check the sending address, destination address, XRP amount and any destination tag shown.
  3. Look up the hash. Use an XRP Ledger explorer or transaction lookup, and confirm the result is marked validated. A wallet’s initial “submitted” message or a provisional explorer result does not prove the final outcome. The XRP Ledger’s finality guidance explains that provisional results can change.

Once a transaction is validated, its result is immutable. A validated result of tesSUCCESS means the payment succeeded on-ledger; any other validated result code means it failed.

If the XRP transfer is still pending

Keep checking for a validated result rather than sending the payment again based only on a pending display. The XRP Ledger’s Send XRP tutorial says a final outcome commonly takes 4–7 seconds, but network load or connectivity problems can make it take longer.

Check the transaction’s LastLedgerSequence. If no validated result appears after that ledger sequence has passed, the transaction can no longer be included under that expiry condition. The finality documentation describes how to interpret a transaction that has not been included.

Can you cancel an unvalidated payment?

In some cases, the XRP Ledger documentation describes a way to try to prevent a transaction from validating: submit a replacement transaction from the same sending address with the same sequence number. It is not guaranteed to work and may be too late once the original transaction has been distributed to the network. This is an advanced operation for someone who controls the sending account, not a routine option for a withdrawal sent through an exchange. See the XRP Ledger finality guidance before attempting it.

If a validated payment went to the wrong address

A validated XRP payment cannot be reversed through the XRP Ledger. If you know who controls the destination address, ask that recipient to return the XRP. Coinbase’s wrong-address guidance likewise directs customers to contact the recipient and says there are no available recovery actions when the sender does not know who controls the address.

If the address appears to belong to an exchange or another hosted wallet, contact that platform through its official support channel. Provide the transaction hash and ask whether it can assist; recovery depends on the platform’s control of the address and its policy. Binance says it generally does not offer recovery for deposits sent to incorrect addresses, though it may assist at its discretion in some cases. Its recovery guidance does not promise that funds will be returned.

If the address was right but the destination tag was wrong or missing

Destination tags help a hosted platform route a payment arriving at an address shared by multiple customers. The XRP Ledger records the address and tag, but cannot determine whether the tag corresponds to a valid customer account in the recipient’s system; that mapping is controlled by the platform. The XRP Ledger’s tag documentation explains the tags’ routing role.

Contact the receiving exchange’s official support team with the transaction hash and follow its current recovery process. Coinbase says customers with a wrong destination tag should contact support and be prepared to provide the hash. Binance describes an application route for some deposits with missing or incorrect tags, but eligibility, fees, return-address requirements and processing depend on its policy; recovery is not guaranteed. See Binance’s recovery instructions.

Use the current deposit address and tag displayed by the receiving platform. Kraken’s XRP Ledger tag instructions, for example, say that an XRP deposit address generated for its account has a unique mandatory destination tag.

What to include in a support request

  • Transaction hash
  • XRP amount
  • Sending and destination addresses
  • Date and time of the transfer
  • The intended tag and the tag entered, if any

Use only the recipient platform’s official support portal. Binance’s recovery article requests the transaction hash and accurate deposit details and says that, after review, any return goes to the original sender address. Do not assume another exchange uses the same procedure.
