If so, contact your local emergency or crisis service and involve a trusted adult or qualified professional. If there is no immediate danger, listen without blame, check the advice with an appropriate human, report the output to the service, and review what personal information your child shared.
Check whether your child is safe right now
Ask plainly and calmly what the chatbot said, whether your child followed any of it, and whether they are thinking about doing so now. The immediate question is not whether the chatbot is generally safe; it is whether your child needs help at this moment.
- If your child is in immediate danger, has been injured, or may imminently harm themselves or someone else: stay with them if it is safe to do so, bring in a trusted adult, and contact the appropriate local emergency or crisis service. Do not wait for the chatbot company to respond.
- If the advice involves urgent medical or mental-health concerns: contact a qualified clinician or local urgent-care service. A chatbot response is not a substitute for professional assessment.
- If the concern is serious but not immediate: arrange prompt advice from the relevant professional, school safeguarding lead, child-protection service, or law-enforcement agency, depending on what happened and where you live.
Emergency numbers, child-protection systems, and reporting duties differ by location. Use local services rather than assuming a number or agency applies everywhere.
Talk with your child without blaming them
Thank your child for telling you. Try open, age-appropriate questions: “What did it tell you?” “What did you think it meant?” and “Did you do anything because of it?” Give them time to answer. Avoid starting with criticism, punishment, or a lecture about using the chatbot; that can make it harder for them to tell you what happened.

UNICEF USA’s February 2026 parent guidance recommends gentle questions when an interaction seems unhealthy, regular check-ins, and exploring chatbot answers together. You can ask which parts seemed helpful, confusing, or wrong. The goal is to understand the actual exchange and your child’s reaction, not to make them defend themselves.
Match the next step to the kind of harm
Different problems need different human help. Use the urgency of the situation, the type of advice, and your location to decide whom to contact.
| What the chatbot advice or interaction involved | What to do |
|---|---|
| Self-harm, suicide, violence, or another immediate threat | Prioritize immediate safety and contact local emergency or crisis services. Involve a trusted adult or qualified professional. |
| Medical or mental-health advice that could affect care | Check it with a qualified clinician. Do not let a chatbot answer delay urgent care or replace professional advice. |
| Sexual exploitation, online enticement, sextortion, or an AI-altered sexually explicit image of a child | In the United States, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) directs families to report to law enforcement and its CyberTipline. Elsewhere, use local child-protection and law-enforcement channels. |
| Financial, legal, school, or other consequential advice without an immediate threat | Pause before acting. Verify it with an appropriate qualified person or institution—for example, a clinician for health advice or the relevant financial institution for an account or payment concern. |
| Misleading or harmful content with no immediate safety threat | Discuss what was wrong, report the output through the service, and monitor whether it is affecting your child. |
NCMEC’s route is specifically for U.S. cases involving child sexual exploitation; it is not the general reporting channel for every harmful chatbot answer.

Keep a careful record, report the output, and check privacy
Record only what is useful and safe
If you need to explain what happened to a clinician, school safeguarding lead, platform, or authority, note the service used, roughly when the exchange happened, what advice raised concern, and whether your child acted on it. Follow the instructions of local authorities if they become involved. Do not repost or forward sensitive material—especially sexual images of a child—to friends, social media, or other services.

Use the chatbot service’s reporting option
Report the specific response through the service’s available feedback or safety-reporting mechanism. If the output is part of an urgent risk, make the report after arranging human help; a platform report is not an emergency response. Reporting options and labels vary by service, so look in the app or website’s help, safety, or feedback controls.
Review what your child shared
Ask whether the child entered their name, school, location, contact details, health information, passwords, payment details, or other private material. Review the service’s privacy settings and available conversation or data controls with them. UNICEF USA’s 2026 guidance recommends discussing platform settings and collected data together. Avoid sharing sensitive excerpts while seeking help unless the appropriate professional or authority asks for them through a suitable channel.

Watch for effects that continue after the conversation
One harmful answer does not by itself show that a child has an addiction or a mental-health condition. Pay attention to changes over time and ask how your child is feeling. UNICEF USA identifies these patterns as reasons for concern:
- distress when stopping or difficulty limiting use;
- secrecy or increased anxiety around chatbot use;
- relying on AI for emotional support instead of turning to trusted people; or
- chatbot use displacing sleep, school, friends, or hobbies.
If these patterns persist or your child is distressed, check in regularly and consider support from a qualified mental-health professional or another trusted professional who knows the child. Keep the conversation open rather than treating one incident as a diagnosis.
Why a chatbot’s answer is not a safe substitute for human judgment
Chatbots can produce misleading or harmful material, and an answer that sounds confident is not proof that it is safe or correct. UNICEF’s December 2025 Guidance on AI and children, version 3.0, warns that some chatbots used for mental-health support have produced dangerous crisis responses and inappropriate clinical responses. For consequential advice—including health, safety, or money decisions—pause and verify with a suitable human before acting.

In its February 9, 2026 parent guidance, UNICEF USA quoted Ying Xu, an assistant professor of AI in Learning and Education at Harvard University and head of the Harvard Child-Centered AI Lab: “Some AI tools collect children’s personal information, expose them to misleading or harmful material, or encourage sharing in ways that are not developmentally appropriate.”
Responsibility does not rest only on families. UNICEF’s December 2025 guidance sets out ten requirements for child-centred AI, including safety, privacy, fairness, transparency and accountability, children’s best interests and well-being, and preparation for AI. UNICEF says the update reflects increased use by children and emerging risks such as AI companions and harmful or illegal content. Its June 2026 recommendations for businesses call for crisis protocols that interrupt high-risk conversations and direct users to context-specific support, discoverable ways to report harmful outputs and privacy concerns, privacy safeguards, and parent or guardian tools and guidance. These are recommendations to businesses, not a universal legal checklist for parents.
UNICEF describes research involving 12,000 children and their parents or caregivers on a project page that does not state the research year. The page reports divides in access, usage, trust, and exposure to risk; the figure is not an estimate of how many children receive harmful chatbot advice. In a separate U.S. development, the Federal Trade Commission announced an inquiry in September 2025 seeking information from seven consumer-facing chatbot companies about how they assess possible effects on children and teens, limit use or potential negative effects, and inform parents and users. That inquiry was intended to study the issue; it was not a finding that any named chatbot caused harm.

It discussed safeguards such as recognizing high-risk language and directing users to reliable referral services; newer UNICEF guidance is more relevant to generative AI and children.
