If an AI tool gives you investment advice that appears wrong, pause before trading or transferring money. AI output can be inaccurate, incomplete, misleading, outdated, or made up. Verify the claim against reliable sources, and get help from a registered investment professional if the decision could affect your financial situation.
Pause and identify the claim
Do not rely solely on a chatbot’s answer to make an investment decision or predict the market. The SEC, North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA), and FINRA warn that AI can generate and spread false or inaccurate information. Their January 25, 2024 investor alert also warns that AI may repeat false or outdated news and material used in market manipulation.
As a practical first step, note the specific statement that seems wrong, the security or account it concerns, and when the AI produced it. This gives you a clear claim to check; it is not an official reporting requirement.
Verify the evidence behind the answer
- Open the cited source independently. Do not assume a link or quotation is genuine just because an AI provided it. Navigate to the publisher’s official site or another independently verified source.
- Check the date and context. Confirm that the information is current and applies to the investment, market, or account in question.
- Test whether the source supports the exact claim. A real source may be quoted inaccurately or may not justify the conclusion the AI drew.
- Compare with other reliable sources. If credible sources disagree, or the claim remains unclear, do not treat the AI answer as verified.
Get qualified human help when the decision is personal
If the answer could materially affect your finances or you cannot verify it, consider speaking with a registered investment professional. The SEC’s Investor.gov guidance on investment advisers explains how to check an adviser and notes that advisers generally must act in their clients’ best interests. Registration is a useful check, not a guarantee of good advice or investment results.

Check both the adviser and the firm
Use Investor.gov’s professional search tools to review the individual and the firm, including registration and disciplinary information. Find the firm’s contact details independently rather than relying on contact information supplied in an unsolicited message or by the AI.
Ask about the professional’s relevant experience, services, fees and compensation, potential conflicts, and whether recommendations are limited to particular products. Review the relationship summary and Form ADV where applicable. The SEC’s guidance on investment adviser advertisements points readers toward disclosures and official records; an advertisement by itself is not proof that an adviser is appropriate for you.

Escalate suspected scams separately
A mistaken AI answer is not automatically fraud. But take extra care if the exchange also involves warning signs identified in the joint regulator alert, such as promises of high returns with little or no risk, an unregistered platform, someone impersonating a professional, or pressure to transfer money.
- Do not send money or sensitive information while you are verifying the offer or identity.
- Independently confirm the person’s identity and the firm’s official contact details.
- Report suspected securities fraud to the SEC, FINRA, or the relevant state securities regulator using contact information obtained from its official site.
For readers in Canada, the joint alert points to the Canadian Securities Administrators’ National Registration Search and provincial regulators. Procedures differ by jurisdiction; readers elsewhere should contact their own securities regulator.

Understand what the SEC alert does—and does not—require
The January 25, 2024 SEC/NASAA/FINRA document is an investor alert, not a binding rule or regulation. It represents staff views and creates no legal obligations. Its guidance is a practical warning to verify AI-generated investment information, not a claim that every error is fraud or that a trade can automatically be reversed.
