What to Do If a Crypto Transfer Is Delayed or Sent to the Wrong Address

A missing crypto balance does not prove a transfer failed. Use the TxID to check the right blockchain, verify the destination details and contact the party able to investigate.

Start with the transaction hash (TxID) and check it on an explorer for the network actually used. The chain record can show whether the transfer is missing, pending, confirmed or failed; that status determines whether to contact the sender, the receiving platform or the address owner. A balance missing from an app does not, by itself, mean the transfer failed.

Why is my crypto transfer delayed?

A transfer can be delayed before it is submitted, while it is waiting for network confirmation, or after it is confirmed but before a wallet or exchange credits it. These are different problems with different people able to investigate them. Coinbase’s send and receive troubleshooting guidance notes that network synchronization delays it describes are usually under an hour; that is Coinbase-specific guidance, not a general service guarantee.

Get the transaction hash from the sender or the withdrawal record of the service that sent it. Search that hash in an explorer for the exact blockchain network used. Do not assume an app’s balance alone shows the transaction’s on-chain status.

If the transaction is not found

Confirm with the sender that the transfer was actually signed and submitted, and that the hash is correct. If the withdrawal began at an exchange, ask that exchange to investigate its withdrawal record. Do not send the payment again until you know what happened to the first attempt.

If it is pending or unconfirmed

The sending wallet or platform is best placed to investigate a transaction that has not yet confirmed. On Ethereum, a fee that is too low can leave a transaction pending. Some wallets offer ways to replace or cancel a pending transaction, but the available options depend on the wallet and transaction state; follow the current instructions for the wallet that sent it rather than trying a generic fix.

If it is confirmed

Compare the actual destination, asset and network shown on-chain with the receiving service’s deposit instructions. A confirmed transfer may still be waiting for the recipient platform to process or credit it. Confirmation requirements vary by asset and platform, so there is no universal number of confirmations that guarantees crediting.

What details should I check?

Match the transfer against the receiving instructions, not just the name of the token or a shortened address. Networks with similar names are not interchangeable.

  • Transaction hash (TxID): The identifier used to find the transfer on the relevant blockchain explorer.
  • Destination address: Compare the full address, not a few opening or ending characters.
  • Network: Confirm that the sender used the same blockchain network the recipient specified.
  • Asset: Verify the exact coin or token and whether the receiving platform supports deposits of it on that network.
  • Memo or destination tag: Check whether the platform required one and whether it was entered correctly.
  • Amount and time: Include these when contacting a service so it can locate the transfer.

OKX lists delayed confirmation, an incorrect address or network, and a missing memo as reasons a deposit may not arrive. See its deposit troubleshooting guidance for the applicable instructions.

What should I do for each transaction status?

What the explorer shows What to do next
No transaction found Ask the sender or sending platform to verify that the transfer was submitted and that the hash is correct.
Pending or unconfirmed Have the sender or sending platform investigate. Use only the sending wallet’s current instructions for any available transaction-specific action.
Confirmed to the correct address and network Contact the receiving platform through its official support channel. Give it the TxID and transfer details, and check whether it requires account verification or other steps before crediting.
Confirmed to a wrong address, network or unsupported asset, or missing a required memo/tag Contact the service controlling the destination address, if known, or the receiving platform’s official support. Ask whether its recovery process applies; recovery is not assured.

Coinbase notes that account verification tasks can affect receiving and crediting. Its troubleshooting page explains how to check a transaction and its confirmations. Share the hash and requested transfer details with support, but never share your seed phrase or private key.

My deposit is confirmed on the blockchain but missing from the exchange

If the explorer confirms the transfer and the address and network match the exchange’s deposit instructions, open a support request with that exchange. Include the TxID, asset, amount, network, destination address, time sent and any memo or tag used. Check the account for deposit notices or outstanding verification requests. Use the exchange’s official website or signed-in app to reach support.

If the transfer used the wrong network, an unsupported token, or an absent or incorrect memo/tag, recovery depends on the receiving service’s supported assets and policies. OKX’s guidance on wrong-address deposits and its deposit-arrival guidance describe platform-specific cases; neither establishes a universal recovery route.

I sent crypto to the wrong address. Can I get it back?

Usually, a confirmed blockchain transfer cannot be reversed by the sender or a wallet provider. Coinbase states: “Due to the irreversible nature of cryptocurrency protocols, transactions cannot be canceled or reversed once initiated.” Ethereum.org likewise says, “A transaction sent on Ethereum is irreversible.”

If you know who controls the address, contact that person or service and ask whether it can return the funds. If the address belongs to an exchange or hosted wallet, use that provider’s official support channel. If the owner is unknown, there may be no practical recovery path. A recipient’s cooperation or a platform’s recovery process may help in some cases, but neither is guaranteed.

Some platforms publish specific recovery terms. Blockchain.com’s Crypto Recovery for Unsupported or Incorrect Transfers, updated August 12, 2026, says it may consider certain mistakes involving supported tokens, networks or memo/tag details. For qualifying cases it lists minimum values of $100 for simple recoveries and $3,000 for complicated recoveries, retains 10% of successfully recovered funds, and says complex cases may take 3+ months. These are Blockchain.com-specific terms, not industry standards or a promise that a particular transfer qualifies. The page also lists cases it cannot recover, including certain unsupported-token transfers to its account.

How to avoid recovery scams

People who have lost funds may be targeted by strangers claiming they can reverse a transfer or unfreeze an account. Use support links reached from the service’s official website or signed-in app. Never give a purported recovery agent your seed phrase or private key, and do not pay a stranger who promises to unlock or accelerate a transfer. Ethereum.org warns against sharing seed phrases with people claiming to recover a wallet. Blockchain.com says, “We will never ask you to deposit significant funds to unfreeze your account or speed up stuck transaction.” A request to connect a wallet, install remote-access software or pay a supposed recovery fee is not proof that funds can be recovered.
