Against its $1,199 U.S. launch price, $485 is about 40.5%—roughly two-fifths. And the difference between those figures is not Apple’s profit.
What the $485 estimate says—and what it does not
In October 2024, reports citing TD Cowen put the estimated cost of components, assembly and packaging for the 256GB iPhone 16 Pro Max at about $485. The phone launched in the United States on September 20, 2024, with a $1,199 launch MSRP for that storage configuration. The estimate is an analyst calculation, not a cost figure Apple published or audited. GizmoChina’s report on the estimate describes the model and the reported figure.
These terms are not interchangeable. A bill of materials (BOM) is an estimate of the components in a product. The TD Cowen figure was reported as including assembly and packaging as well. “Manufacturing cost” can refer to a broader or narrower set of expenses depending on the source. A company’s cost of goods sold is an accounting measure, while total cost to Apple would also involve costs beyond building the handset. The $485 estimate should therefore be described as an estimated parts, assembly and packaging cost—not Apple’s complete cost to produce and sell a phone.
Is $485 nearly one-third of $1,199?
No. The arithmetic for the 256GB U.S. launch configuration is:

- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
- $485 ÷ $1,199 × 100 = approximately 40.5% of launch MSRP.
- One-third of $1,199 is approximately $399.67.
- The $485 estimate is about $85 more than one-third of MSRP.
- $1,199 minus $485 is $714.
So “about two-fifths” is a more accurate comparison than “nearly one-third.” The $1,199 price is a U.S. launch MSRP, generally before sales tax; prices and taxes differ in other markets. This is a launch-period comparison, not a statement about the phone’s current 2026 selling price or production cost.
Which costs were reported as the largest?
Coverage of the TD Cowen analysis identified the rear-camera system and the display and touchscreen as leading cost categories, at approximately $80 each. Taken literally, those two estimates total about $160, or roughly one-third of the reported $485 figure. The report also identified the A18 Pro chip, memory, storage, modem and other electronics as contributors; faster LPDDR5X memory was noted as a cost increase over the prior generation. These are attributed analyst estimates, not an Apple-published component ledger. DigiTimes’ coverage of the component estimates provides the reported category figures.

The $485 figure applies to the 256GB model. It should not be assigned automatically to the 512GB or 1TB versions: storage costs rise with capacity, while many other parts remain broadly similar. The cited reporting does not establish the complete cost for each capacity.
Why the $714 difference is not Apple’s profit
The $714 subtraction is only MSRP minus an estimated production figure. It is not net profit per handset, and it does not establish Apple’s actual gross margin on this model. MSRP is also not necessarily the revenue Apple receives on every sale: carrier promotions, retailer arrangements, trade-in credits and other distribution terms can affect realized revenue.

Costs outside the reported estimate can include product design and engineering, software development and support, chip research, licensing, advertising, freight and distribution, warehousing, warranty service, repairs, customer support, payment processing, retail operations, corporate overhead, taxes, returns and unsold inventory. The estimate does not provide a precise accounting reconciliation of these costs, and public information does not reveal Apple’s per-unit cost and margin for this iPhone.
Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max Product Environmental Report discusses materials, manufacturing, assembly, packaging and transport. It supplies context for the stages involved in making and moving a phone, but it does not confirm the $485 estimate or publish a complete per-unit cost ledger.

How it compares with the iPhone 15 Pro Max
Reports citing the same TD Cowen analysis put the comparable 256GB iPhone 15 Pro Max estimate at about $453, versus about $485 for the iPhone 16 Pro Max—an increase of roughly $32, or about 7%. The U.S. launch MSRP for the comparable 256GB Pro Max configuration remained $1,199. Macworld’s report describes the year-over-year estimate increase.
That comparison suggests the reported production estimate rose while the comparable launch MSRP did not. It still does not show the actual gross margin on either phone: both cost figures are estimates, and MSRP is not a complete measure of Apple’s realized revenue or total costs.

- The larger 6.9-inch display enhances productivity and media consumption, giving extra room for multitasking, side-by-side apps, and immersive viewing without feeling unwieldy in hand.
- Camera improvements focus on ultra-wide performance, capturing more detail at the edges of the frame and reducing distortion, making landscape shots, group photos, and architecture photography cleaner.
- Refined gesture controls and haptic feedback make interactions feel more precise, so scrolling, tapping, or switching between apps is smoother and more satisfying compared to previous Plus models.
- Audio enhancements optimize speaker output for spatial awareness, delivering clearer separation between instruments and voices in music, video playback, and FaceTime calls without relying on headphones.
- Durable yet lightweight materials balance heft and portability, with a subtly textured back and reinforced edges that improve grip while maintaining the premium appearance expected from the Plus series.
Why the estimate is uncertain—and time-bound
Analyst BOM calculations can draw on teardown inspection and assumptions about supplier prices, production volume, contract manufacturing, component markets and whether assembly, testing or packaging is counted. Apple’s supplier contracts and internal cost allocations are private, so outsiders cannot verify an exact per-unit cost from the public estimate.
The $485 number was reported in October 2024, shortly after launch; Counterpoint Research listed a separate specialist BOM analysis on November 4, 2024, but its public listing does not establish the TD Cowen figure. Counterpoint’s iPhone 16 Pro Max BOM analysis listing is useful context for the kind of analysis involved, not confirmation of $485. Component prices, yields, manufacturing locations, logistics and supplier terms can change, so a 2024 estimate is not evidence of the phone’s cost in 2026.
The practical conclusion is narrow: the $485 estimate helps illustrate the estimated hardware, assembly and packaging cost for one launch configuration. It cannot by itself settle whether the phone was overpriced. That judgment depends on the buyer’s alternatives and the value they place on the product, not on treating the difference from MSRP as profit.
