On October 8, 2021, for the Indian Air Force’s 89th Air Force Day, Rolls-Royce reaffirmed its support for India’s armed forces and described its work with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The announcement highlighted a relationship the company dates to 1933, an Indian engine-support centre, and HAL’s maintenance and parts-manufacturing role. It was a corporate update, not an announcement of a new aircraft or engine order.
What Rolls-Royce announced
Rolls-Royce used Air Force Day to describe its existing contribution to Indian military aviation and its industrial arrangements in India. The company said more than 750 of its engines, across 10 engine types, powered aircraft operated by India’s military. It did not provide a fleet-by-fleet breakdown or an independently audited inventory, so these figures should be understood as Rolls-Royce’s claims.
The announcement also pointed to a Defence Service Centre in Bangalore and its partnership with HAL, including maintenance support for the Adour Mk871 and Indian manufacture of Adour engine parts. These details describe support and supply-chain activity rather than a new procurement programme. Why October 8 mattered
India observes Indian Air Force Day on October 8. The 2021 occasion marked the service’s 89th anniversary, giving Rolls-Royce a commemorative setting to discuss its history with the IAF and its role in India’s defence-aerospace industry. The announcement was published on October 8, 2021, as also reflected in Indian Defence Review’s republication.

The company’s historical account
Rolls-Royce says its relationship with the IAF began in 1933, when a Bristol Jupiter engine powered the force’s first flight. That is the company’s account of the relationship’s beginnings; it does not establish that Rolls-Royce was the IAF’s exclusive engine supplier or that the relationship meant uninterrupted exclusive supply. The announcement placed this history alongside a present-day description of engines and support, rather than claiming a sole role in Indian military aviation.
What HAL contributes
HAL was central to the announcement’s industrial story. Rolls-Royce said its engines had been made in India and supported by HAL for more than 60 years. It identified two practical elements of the relationship:

Maintenance, parts manufacture and aircraft procurement are different activities. The cited announcement describes the first two; it does not announce a new aircraft-manufacturing arrangement, engine-development programme or government contract. Rolls-Royce framed its cooperation with HAL in the context of Indian defence indigenization and self-reliance, but did not quantify the arrangement’s output or economic effect.

What engine support and “time on wing” mean
The Bangalore Defence Service Centre was described by Rolls-Royce as supporting its engines in operation with India’s armed forces. The company said the centre’s objectives included maintaining engine availability, maximizing “time on wing,” and reducing maintenance and overhaul times. “Time on wing” means the period an engine remains installed and operating before it is removed for major maintenance or overhaul.
These are stated aims, not reported performance results. The 2021 announcement gives no availability rates, maintenance turnaround figures, overhaul-time comparisons or other readiness metrics. Local maintenance and parts supply can support sustainment, but the announcement does not quantify their effect on operational readiness.
What the 2021 statement did not establish
Despite its language about reinforcing commitment, Rolls-Royce did not announce a new aircraft order, engine order, monetary investment, production line or bilateral government treaty. Nor did it give production quantities for Indian-made Adour parts or a measured improvement in fleet readiness. Its significance is as a dated account of long-running supplier support and industrial cooperation with HAL, not evidence of a new 2026 capability or contract.
