When Axon founder Rick Smith said he wanted to make bullets “obsolete,” he was not proposing to eliminate ammunition. In a 2018 GeekWire interview, he described a technology-first ambition: make conducted-energy weapons effective enough in more situations that police would have fewer reasons to fire handguns. The interview records a founder’s vision and forecast—not proof that the approach reduced gun deaths or that Tasers could reliably replace firearms.
What the “obsolete bullet” claim meant
Smith’s argument focused on police and military use of firearms, not civilian gun ownership or ammunition generally. He believed officers would prefer a nonfatal way to stop a threat when circumstances allowed, and that improving Tasers could make that option practical in more encounters. He predicted that Axon’s Tasers could outperform a handgun fired at the same range within roughly a decade. That was a prediction made in 2018, not an independently verified technical result. GeekWire’s September 6, 2018 profile does not establish whether the forecast was met.
The distinction matters: reducing firearm use in some law-enforcement encounters is a narrower goal than reducing gun deaths overall. Smith’s proposal did not, on the evidence in the profile, address shootings involving civilians, suicide, domestic violence, accidents, or mass violence as a whole.
Why Smith believed a better weapon could matter
The profile presents Smith’s motivation as both personal and entrepreneurial. It reports that two of his high-school friends died in gun violence, and that he founded the company that became TASER International in 1993, at age 23. It also says he connected with Jack Cover, whom the profile identifies as a NASA Apollo scientist and inventor associated with the original Taser. These are biographical details as reported in the interview, rather than independently established here.

Smith’s premise was that technology might reduce lethal force where policy or legislation alone could not. He compared this approach with the response to HIV/AIDS: in his framing, society did not rely only on rules about behavior but also developed treatments and preventive medicines. The analogy explains his preference for engineering a tool; it does not demonstrate that weapons and infectious disease are equivalent policy problems. Firearms involve questions of intent, access, regulation, constitutional rights, and law-enforcement intervention that differ sharply from medical treatment.
The engineering question is reliability under pressure
The profile identifies a basic limitation: a Taser can fail to make effective contact with its intended target. Better range or nominal accuracy would not, by itself, prove that a device can replace a handgun. A meaningful comparison would need to specify what “outperform” means and assess dependable field use, how quickly a threat is stopped, whether a second deployment is possible after a miss, and how the device performs against moving or shielded targets and in different environments.

Those details matter most when failure could leave an officer or another person exposed to a lethal threat. A less-lethal weapon is not harmless, and incapacitation is not automatically the same as immediately stopping a threat. The interview supplies no failure rates, independent trials, or detailed performance criteria. It therefore cannot establish that a Taser would be a suitable substitute in every situation where an officer might consider a firearm.
Axon’s wider technology strategy
In 2018, the company formerly known as TASER International was expanding beyond conducted-energy weapons. The profile describes a portfolio that included body-worn and in-car cameras, evidence-management software, sensors, and artificial-intelligence services, alongside Tasers. It identifies Seattle as the software operation’s base and Scottsdale, Arizona, as company headquarters at that time. These details describe the company’s strategy as reported in 2018; they do not establish the maturity, deployment, or current status of each product.

This expansion also complicates the claim that technology would reduce harm. Cameras and evidence software might support documentation and review, while analytics and other data systems can extend surveillance or shape enforcement decisions. Selling weapons, recording systems, and software to the same public-safety institutions creates a broader set of questions than whether one device can work: what is collected, who can access it, how decisions are made, and what independent oversight exists?
The accountability paradox: safety tools can carry civil-liberties risks
The interview raises concerns about privacy, facial recognition, racial profiling, predictive policing, and technology used by law-enforcement and immigration agencies. Smith acknowledged the concerns but argued that software systems could make discriminatory practices easier to detect and correct than human decision-making. That is an argument for potential accountability, not evidence that an algorithm is fair or that its use improves outcomes.

The two questions should be assessed separately: can a technology reduce the use of lethal force, and can the same company’s products increase surveillance or reproduce discriminatory practices? A positive answer to the first does not resolve the second. Evaluation would need to consider the data used, the rules governing access and deployment, the ability to challenge decisions, and whether harms fall disproportionately on particular communities.

Even strong evidence that a device reduced police shootings would support a limited conclusion about those encounters. It would not, on its own, show that the technology reduced overall gun deaths or that it could replace legislation, training, public-health measures, or institutional reform.
The “Working Geek” portrait behind the headline
The interview was also a workplace-and-lifestyle profile. Smith described using Apple devices, an Oura ring, Quip for collaboration, and Final Cut Pro and 1 Second Everyday for personal video projects. He said he favored a paperless, flexible workspace, strong leaders who could act without making him an organizational bottleneck, and cycles of intense work followed by recovery—an approach he likened to an Olympian’s. The profile reports that he had about 15–20 meetings a week and 198 unanswered emails when interviewed; those figures are a snapshot, not enduring measures of his work habits.
Axon’s offices were described as having shared work areas, quiet “maker time,” noise-canceling headphones, and science-fiction-themed design. These details help explain the profile’s view of Smith as a technology-minded executive, but they do not validate the company’s claims about weapons, accountability, or public safety.
What the 2018 profile establishes—and what it does not
The article documents Smith’s ambition to make nonfatal weapons more capable and his belief that innovation could reduce the need for lethal force. It does not prove that bullets became obsolete, that Tasers matched handguns at comparable ranges, or that Axon’s broader technology reduced gun deaths. The central question it leaves open is whether a technology-first response can deliver measurable safety gains while remaining reliable, accountable, and limited enough to protect civil liberties.
