What PFAS Are and Why They Persist in the Environment

PFAS are thousands of synthetic chemicals, and many persist because their carbon–fluorine bonds resist breakdown. Their properties, exposure routes, and evidence of harm vary by compound.

PFAS are a large family of synthetic chemicals, not one substance. Many persist because strong carbon–fluorine bonds resist environmental breakdown, but PFAS differ in how they move, how long they remain in the body, and what health effects are supported by evidence. “Forever chemicals” is shorthand for persistence—not a literal description of every PFAS.

What PFAS are

PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) describes them as thousands of synthetic chemicals containing a partially or fully fluorinated carbon chain. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) likewise treats PFAS as a very large class that includes PFOA, PFOS, and GenX chemicals.

The family name does not mean that every member behaves alike. PFAS can have different structures and properties, including different persistence, movement through the environment, and clearance from the body. Commonly studied examples include perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA). ATSDR says PFOA and PFOS have been phased out of production in the United States; that does not remove contamination or releases already present, and other countries may still manufacture or use them.

Why many PFAS persist

The key reason is chemical: carbon–fluorine bonds are strong. ATSDR explains that these compounds do not fully break down in the environment or the human body, while EPA describes PFAS components as breaking down very slowly over time. As a result, releases from production, product use, or waste can remain relevant long after the original use.

Persistence is not identical across the family. ATSDR reports that human half-lives range from a few days to eight years or more, depending on the PFAS. That range describes variation among compounds; it is not a universal half-life for PFAS, nor does it mean every member remains in the body for years.

Why PFAS have been used

PFAS have been used since the 1940s in applications where resistance to water, oil, grease, stains, or friction is useful. Government sources list examples such as:

  • Industrial applications and some non-stick or stain-repellent products

These are examples of uses, not proof that every item in a broad category contains PFAS. Ingredients and materials can vary by product, manufacturer, formulation, and date.

How PFAS reach the environment and people

PFAS can enter soil, water, and air during production and use. EPA also identifies production and waste streams as routes into the environment. People may encounter PFAS through drinking water, some foods (including fish), contaminated soil or dust, air, certain products or packaging, and occupations involving PFAS. Manufacturing and firefighting-foam use can also be exposure settings.

Which route matters depends on location and circumstances. A possible exposure route does not establish an individual’s dose or predict a health outcome. EPA says CDC surveys show that most people in the United States have been exposed to some PFAS; most known exposures are relatively low, while some may be higher, particularly with long-term exposure to a concentrated source. Exposure is not the same thing as harm.

What is known about health effects

EPA says current research suggests exposure to certain PFAS may lead to adverse health outcomes, while research continues into how effects vary by chemical and exposure level. The UK government notes that evidence is inconsistent and that only a small number of PFAS have been well studied. Findings about particular PFAS or exposure situations should not be generalized to every member of the family; evidence remains limited for many less-studied compounds.

ATSDR says PFAS can be measured in blood, but blood levels cannot currently determine what harmful effects might be possible. A blood test alone therefore cannot predict whether someone will become ill.

What “forever chemicals” means—and what it does not

“Forever chemicals” is a memorable shorthand for the persistence of many PFAS. It does not mean every PFAS lasts forever, that all members share the same risks, or that a chemical can never leave a person’s body. Environmental persistence and human clearance vary by compound. For a specific local concern, use guidance from the relevant public health or water authority; this overview cannot assess an individual’s exposure or recommend a particular treatment device.
