Onsemi’s purchase of GlobalFoundries’ East Fishkill fab expanded its U.S. manufacturing capabilities and its reported environmental footprint. The sustainability case is about the potential to run a larger, more capable manufacturing network efficiently—not evidence that the acquisition immediately reduced emissions or resource use.
What did onsemi buy at East Fishkill?
Onsemi completed its purchase of GlobalFoundries’ 300 mm East Fishkill (EFK), New York, site and fabrication facility effective December 31, 2022. Onsemi said the site retained more than 1,000 jobs and became its largest U.S. manufacturing site. The company’s 2023 Form 10-K put total consideration for the acquisition at $406.3 million.
The facility added advanced CMOS capabilities, including 40 nm and 65 nm process nodes, alongside 300 mm production of power-discrete devices and image sensors. Onsemi said the site would give it the only U.S. 12-inch power-discrete and image-sensor fab. The wafer diameter and process capabilities describe what the facility can make; they do not, by themselves, establish its environmental performance.
What do onsemi’s emissions and energy figures show?
Onsemi’s 2023 sustainability report recalculated its 2022 emissions baseline to include EFK. That change matters when comparing years: adding a major fab to the company’s reporting boundary can raise totals even if the facility’s efficiency is unchanged. The figures below are company-wide, not EFK-only measurements.

Reported emissions in 2023
| Category | Onsemi-reported 2023 emissions | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Scope 1 | 828,620 MTCO₂e | Direct emissions reported within the company’s operational boundary. |
| Scope 2 | 713,968 MTCO₂e | Emissions associated with purchased energy, as reported by onsemi. |
| Scope 3 | 1,569,430 MTCO₂e | Other value-chain emissions included in onsemi’s inventory. |
These are onsemi’s company-wide reported totals for 2023, not a breakdown of EFK’s individual contribution. They also should not be read as a facility-level carbon-intensity result: the report figures cited here do not establish emissions per wafer, unit of output, or dollar of revenue at EFK.
Reported energy use in 2023
Onsemi reported total energy consumption of 2,208,573 MWh in 2023, including 1,766,748 MWh of purchased electricity. The company said the increase from 2022 generally resulted from the EFK acquisition, finalized on December 31, 2022. That explanation makes the higher total evidence of a larger reporting and manufacturing footprint—not proof of improved sustainability or of worse efficiency at the acquired fab.
Are the efficiency and savings claims specific to EFK?
No. Onsemi’s 2024 sustainability report described company-wide opportunities estimated at 8,000 MWh of electricity savings and 2.5 million gallons of water savings, with about $880,000 in annual cost savings. The report did not attribute those opportunities solely to EFK, so they should not be presented as the fab’s own results or as savings already achieved there.
The figures do show why resource efficiency matters financially in semiconductor manufacturing: electricity and water use can affect operating costs as well as environmental impact. But an identified opportunity is not the same as verified, realized savings. The cited figures do not specify what share came from EFK or provide a site-level before-and-after result.

Why does EFK matter to U.S. supply and defense?
The site adds domestic capacity for power-discrete devices, image sensors, and CMOS processes. Those capabilities are relevant to markets onsemi has identified, including vehicle electrification, driver-assistance systems, energy infrastructure, and factory automation. Keeping more than 1,000 jobs at the site also preserved an established U.S. manufacturing workforce.
In October 2024, EFK was accredited as a U.S. Department of Defense Defense Microelectronics Activity (DMEA) Category 1A Trusted Supplier. That designation supports its role in secure aerospace and defense semiconductor production. It is a defense supply-chain trust designation, not an environmental certification and not a measure of the fab’s emissions or energy efficiency.

How should investors interpret the sustainability angle?
The acquisition connects operational scale, manufacturing capability, and environmental reporting, but the available company-wide metrics do not settle whether EFK itself is more sustainable than another fab. A meaningful facility comparison would need comparable site-level data—such as energy and water use per wafer or unit produced—along with consistent emissions boundaries, product mix, and reporting periods. The figures cited here do not provide that comparison.
Onsemi’s 2025 reporting classified 78% of its revenue, approximately $4.684 billion, as triple-bottom-line revenue. That is onsemi’s own classification and describes the company’s revenue mix; it does not show that EFK generated that revenue share or that the acquisition caused an environmental benefit.

For a personal-finance reader assessing the business story, the $406.3 million consideration provides context for the transaction’s scale, while the sustainability reports describe company-wide energy, emissions, and efficiency opportunities. Neither the purchase amount nor those corporate figures alone establishes the acquisition’s return on investment or EFK’s site-specific sustainability performance.
