What Is Wealth Management? Services, Fees, and How to Choose

Wealth management may combine investment advice with broader financial planning, but services and fees vary. Learn what to ask and how to check a U.S. provider.

Wealth management is a professional relationship that may combine investment advice or portfolio management with broader financial planning. The exact services vary: a provider using the title may cover several areas of your finances or focus on a narrower set of investments or products. Before hiring anyone, confirm what is included, how the provider is paid, what the full cost could be, and how to check the person and firm.

What wealth management can include

There is no single standardized wealth-management package. The term commonly describes advice that connects investment decisions with a person’s wider financial goals, but the actual scope depends on the provider and the written relationship.

A financial planner may consider savings, investments, insurance, taxes, retirement, and estate planning, then develop a strategy for financial goals. Others who use the title may recommend only a limited range of products. Investment advisers typically provide ongoing advice about buying, selling, or holding investments and may monitor whether a portfolio remains aligned with a client’s objectives. Some also provide financial planning. The SEC’s financial planner guidance and investment adviser guidance describe these varying roles.

Ask the provider to spell out which parts they handle, which they do not, and whether advice includes implementation and ongoing monitoring. Do not assume that tax, estate, insurance, and investment help all come with the title “wealth manager.”

How wealth managers are paid—and what to compare

Financial planners may charge an hourly or fixed fee for a plan, receive commissions on products sold, or combine these methods. Investment advisers commonly charge a fee based on assets in an account, and account, transaction, servicing, or investment-product costs may also apply. A headline percentage alone does not show the total cost. Ask for an estimate in dollars based on your expected account size, plus any other charges.

The SEC says investment advisers must act in clients’ best interests and not put their own interests ahead, while also recognizing that compensation can create conflicts. A duty to act in a client’s best interest does not mean every payment arrangement is free of incentives or conflicts.

When comparing professionals, use the same questions for each:

  • Scope: What planning, investment management, implementation, and monitoring are included? What is excluded or limited?
  • Total cost: What is the fee basis, what would it mean in dollars for your circumstances, and what account, transaction, or product expenses could be added?
  • Compensation and conflicts: How are the individual and firm paid, and what incentives might that create?
  • Qualifications and fit: What relevant experience do they have with circumstances like yours? Who issued each credential, and is it current and in good standing?
  • Registration and record: Which regulator oversees the firm or professional, what is their registration status, and what legal or disciplinary history is disclosed?

These are comparison criteria, not a ranking system. A credential such as CFP® or CFA may indicate specific training or standards, but it does not establish that the person offers every service you need. Verify the designation with its issuing organization.

How to check a U.S. wealth manager before hiring

In the United States, use the SEC’s free Investor.gov professional search tool to check both the individual and the firm. Investor.gov recommends asking about services and products, limitations, compensation, conflicts, relevant experience, and disciplinary history. Review the firm’s Form CRS (relationship summary) and Form ADV brochure, and read the written agreement and fee terms before agreeing to work together.

Adviser registration follows a general pattern, not a rule you should apply without checking. Investor.gov describes small advisers as having under $25 million in regulatory assets under management (RAUM), mid-sized advisers as having $25 million to $100 million, and large advisers as having more than $100 million. Small and mid-sized advisers are generally state-registered; large advisers are generally SEC-registered. Exceptions apply, so confirm status using the regulator’s current lookup resources rather than inferring it from a title or asset figure. This guidance is specific to the United States; elsewhere, consult the relevant local regulator.

What market statistics do—and do not—tell you

Market-wide figures describe the size and reporting activity of a sector; they do not establish a provider’s quality, service scope, fees, or likely results for an individual client.

Measure What the source reports How to interpret it
U.S. investment advisers The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reported 22,932 investment advisers in 2025, up 4.2% from 2024. Its highlights draw adviser counts from registration and exemption information reported on Form ADV Item 2. SEC 2025 investment adviser statistics A count of advisers, not wealth-management firms offering an identical service bundle.
U.S. regulatory assets under management The SEC reported $177 trillion in RAUM in 2025, up 21.0% year over year. The measure draws on Form ADV Item 5F(2)(a-c); discretionary and non-discretionary RAUM may not sum exactly because of rounding. SEC 2025 investment adviser statistics RAUM is a regulatory reporting measure, not the same thing as client wealth or money managed for a particular household.
United Kingdom wealth-management portfolio The Financial Conduct Authority reported that firms it supervises in its wealth-management portfolio serve more than 5.5 million retail clients and hold almost £1 trillion in assets. Its 2026 findings draw on survey data from around 400 firms, supported by regulatory returns and other FCA and public data. FCA 2026 wealth-management survey A UK portfolio-specific estimate. Its geography, population, and measurement are not interchangeable with the SEC’s U.S. figures.

The FCA has described a stronger wealth-management sector as a way to support growth, build trust in investing, and help clients make better-informed decisions. That is the regulator’s policy view, not evidence that a particular service will produce better results.

Questions to settle in the written relationship

  • Which services will you provide, and which financial topics or products are outside your scope?
  • How will you be paid, what could I pay in total, and what other account or investment costs may arise?
  • What conflicts of interest exist, and how are they addressed?
  • What are your relevant qualifications and experience with clients in circumstances like mine?
  • Where can I review the firm’s relationship summary, disclosures, fee terms, and disciplinary record?
  • How often will you review my plan or investments, and what would prompt a change?

For tax, legal, or investment decisions, confirm that the professional is qualified and authorized to provide the particular service in your jurisdiction. A wealth-management relationship is not a substitute for checking who is responsible for each piece of advice.
